Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer in the Bay Area. In Palo Alto it has a particular feel. Local schools are still in session for another few days, Stanford is in the final push before exams and commencement and the foothills have just turned from green to gold. Many residents leave for the coast or the mountains, which leaves town calm and easy to get around.

This guide covers the 2027 weekend, from Saturday, May 29 to Monday, May 31. It explains what is open and closed, how transit changes on the holiday, what to expect from the weather and traffic and how to fill three days in and around the city. For the rest of the month, see our May guide. For what comes next, read Palo Alto in June.

How the weekend fits the calendar

Date (2027)What happens
Friday, May 28Stanford's spring end-quarter period begins; heavy getaway traffic after noon
Saturday, May 29Downtown farmers market
Sunday, May 30California Avenue farmers market
Monday, May 31Memorial Day; no Stanford classes, PAUSD closed, city holiday
Thursday, June 3PAUSD last day of school
June 4 to 9Stanford final exams
Sunday, June 13Stanford Commencement

Two things follow from this. First, Memorial Day is a single day off for local families rather than the start of a vacation, since PAUSD runs until June 3. Second, Stanford students are on campus and studying, so the university is lively but not overrun. The rush comes two weeks later with commencement. If you want to see the campus before graduation crowds, this weekend is a good choice. Our commencement guide explains why June 10 to 13 is the weekend to avoid.

What is open and closed

Memorial Day is one of the city's official holidays. The city's 2026 list included it and its holiday closures page will post the 2027 list. Here is what that usually means.

  • City offices close on the Monday. Police, fire and dispatch work as usual.
  • Trash pickup. GreenWaste skips collection only on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, so Memorial Day collection should run on schedule.
  • Parking. Residential Parking Permit limits are not enforced on city holidays. Hydrant, red curb and street sweeping rules still apply.
  • Noise. Leaf blowers and construction are not allowed on Memorial Day under the city's noise code.
  • Farmers markets. Both run year-round, Saturday downtown and Sunday on California Avenue.
  • Shops and restaurants mostly stay open, often on Sunday hours. Call ahead for small independents.

Our holiday closures guide covers libraries, trash and parking rules for every city holiday.

Getting around on the holiday

Caltrain's holiday page listed a weekend schedule for Memorial Day 2026, which means fewer trains than a normal Monday. Check the holiday service page for 2027 before you plan a trip to San Francisco. Our Caltrain guide covers fares and stations.

On campus, most Marguerite shuttle lines stop on university holidays. Stanford keeps a handful of medical center routes running. On Saturday and Sunday the main lines do not run anyway, so plan to walk or bike around campus all weekend.

Roads are the bigger story. Friday afternoon brings heavy traffic toward the coast on Highway 92, south on Highway 17 to Santa Cruz and east toward Lake Tahoe. Monday afternoon brings it all back. Within Palo Alto, weekday commute traffic is lighter than usual on Friday and nearly absent on Monday.

Weather and the hills

Late May is warm and almost always dry. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give May an average high of 73.3°F and less than half an inch of rain for the whole month. Some mornings start under a gray marine layer that burns off by late morning. By Memorial Day most of the grassland around the Dish and Arastradero has turned gold, which marks the start of fire season. Smoking is banned in city parks and preserves and Red Flag Warnings can close some trails in the hills.

Three days in town

Saturday

Start at the downtown farmers market for cherries, strawberries and the first apricots. Walk through Professorville and over to the Stanford campus for the Main Quad and the free Cantor Arts Center. In the evening, find a patio for dinner. Our outdoor dining guide lists the best ones.

Sunday

Get to Foothills Nature Preserve early. The city caps visitors at 600 at a time and holiday weekends hit that limit. Spend the afternoon at the California Avenue market, which closes at 1 p.m., or at Rinconada Pool, which is open year-round.

Monday

Walk the Dish loop before 9 a.m., while it is cool. Hoover Tower has opened on Memorial Day in past years under its holiday policy, so check its hours if you want the view. End the day with a sunset walk on the Baylands levees.

Day trips for the long weekend

Everyone has the same idea on this weekend, so leave early or choose a less obvious destination.

  1. The coast. Half Moon Bay is cooler and often foggy. Go early on Saturday to avoid the Highway 92 backup.
  2. Redwoods. Big Basin is open for day use, with parking reservations recommended. Closer groves in the Santa Cruz Mountains need no reservation.
  3. Santa Cruz. The Boardwalk is a classic holiday outing. Monday afternoon traffic on Highway 17 is heavy, so plan a late return.
  4. Lake Tahoe. The Forest Service says its beaches and picnic areas generally open on Memorial Day weekend. Snow can linger at elevation. See our Lake Tahoe guide.

If you would rather not drive at all, Caltrain to San Francisco on the weekend schedule is the low-stress option. Our day trips guide lists more ideas by distance.

Marking the day

Memorial Day honors those who died in military service. Palo Alto does not hold a large citywide parade. Observances tend to be smaller, from services at regional cemeteries to neighborhood gatherings. Several Palo Alto neighborhoods have held their own Memorial Day block parties and potlucks. Check with local veterans' groups or the city calendar for a ceremony near you.

What to pack

  • Light layers. Afternoons reach the 70s, while mornings and evenings sit in the 50s.
  • A warm jacket for the coast, where late May is often gray, windy and in the 50s or low 60s.
  • Sun protection and water for gold, shadeless foothill trails.
  • A picnic blanket. Holiday weekends are made for long lunches in the parks.

Hotels and booking

Palo Alto's business hotels often see weekday demand drop over a holiday weekend, which can mean reasonable weekend rates. Late May also brings graduations at other colleges and end-of-year events at Stanford, so some weekends fill. Book early and choose a refundable rate. You can compare Palo Alto hotels for Memorial Day weekend as soon as your dates are set.

Good to know

  • Leave for the coast or the mountains before noon on Friday, or wait until Saturday morning.
  • Fireworks of every kind are illegal in Palo Alto.
  • Bring a layer for the evening. Late May nights cool into the 50s.
