Day trips from Palo Alto

Palo Alto sits in the middle of the Bay Area, so the ocean, old-growth redwoods, two big cities and wine country are all within a day's reach. Here is how to pick the right one.

One of the best things about staying in Palo Alto is how much lies within a short drive. In about half an hour you can be walking through a formal garden in Woodside or standing on a beach in Half Moon Bay. Give it an hour and you reach Santa Cruz, the redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains or the middle of San Francisco by train. Push to two hours and the Monterey Peninsula or the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma come into range.

This section covers more than a dozen trips we think are worth a full day, from the coast to the Sierra. Each guide explains how to get there from Palo Alto, what to see, how long to allow and what to book ahead. This hub helps you choose between them. It also covers the practical side: which trips work on Caltrain, when traffic bites and when a guided tour or an overnight stay makes more sense than a long round trip.

How to choose a day trip

Start with three questions. Do you have a car? How much driving do you want to do? What kind of scenery are you after? The answers narrow things down fast.

  • No car: go to San Francisco or San Jose. Both sit on the Caltrain line and both stations are within reach of the main sights.
  • Ocean: Half Moon Bay is the closest coast. Santa Cruz adds a beach boardwalk, surfing and a warmer, more sheltered bay.
  • Big trees: our guide to redwood forests near Palo Alto ranks the groves by distance, from a short accessible trail off Skyline Boulevard to Big Basin.
  • Gardens and history: Filoli is the shortest trip on the list and pairs well with lunch in Woodside.
  • A splurge day: Monterey and Carmel or Napa and Sonoma. Both are long drives that many people turn into an overnight.

If you only have one free day, pick by season. The coast is often foggy in early summer and clearest in September and October. Wine country is busiest during the fall harvest. Gardens peak in spring. Our weather guide explains the local microclimates, which matter a lot here: it can be warm and sunny in Palo Alto while Half Moon Bay sits under a gray marine layer 20 degrees cooler.

By train or by car

Trips that work on Caltrain

Palo Alto station sits at the foot of University Avenue and electric Caltrain trains run north to San Francisco and south to San Jose. On weekdays an express train reaches San Francisco in roughly 40 minutes and a local takes about 50. San Jose Diridon is closer still. You can pay with a Clipper card or tap a contactless bank card at the platform readers, so there is no need to queue for tickets. Weekend service runs less often, so check the Caltrain timetable before you set out and note the time of the last train home. Our getting around guide covers fares and stations in more detail.

Trips that need wheels

Everything else on this list is much easier by car. Buses do reach some coastal towns, but connections are slow and the redwood parks, Filoli, the Monterey Peninsula and wine country are spread out. If you flew in without a car, a one or two day rental from a Palo Alto or airport location is usually the simplest answer. You can compare rental car prices across the big agencies, including pickups at SJC and SFO. For longer trips beyond the Caltrain corridor, such as Amtrak connections toward the Central Coast, you can compare train and bus tickets in one place.

Traffic tips

  • Leave early. Heading out before 8 a.m. on a weekend beats most of the beach and wine country traffic.
  • Highway 92 to Half Moon Bay backs up badly on October weekends during pumpkin season.
  • Highway 17 to Santa Cruz is slow on summer weekends and dangerous when people drive it too fast. Stay in your lane and leave space.
  • For Napa and Sonoma, avoid crossing the bay during the weekday evening commute. Bay Area bridges collect tolls electronically in one direction only and the Golden Gate Bridge has no cash lanes, so ask your rental company how it bills tolls.

The best trips by season

SeasonGood choicesWhy
Spring (March to May)Filoli, Half Moon Bay, redwoodsGardens in bloom, green hills, full creeks
Summer (June to August)Santa Cruz, San Francisco, redwoodsBoardwalk rides run daily; redwood shade stays cool
Fall (September to November)Half Moon Bay, Monterey, Napa and SonomaClearer coast, pumpkin farms, grape harvest, monarch butterflies
Winter (December to February)San Francisco, San Jose, MontereyIndoor museums and the aquarium; Filoli's holiday lights

Summer catches many visitors out. Palo Alto can be hot while San Francisco and the coast are cool and gray, especially in June and July. Pack a warm layer for any trip west of the hills, whatever the forecast at home says.

When a guided tour makes sense

A tour is worth it in two situations. The first is wine country, where nobody in the group should be driving after a day of tastings. The second is when you have no car and want to see the coast or Monterey without renting one. Most tours leave from San Francisco, which is an easy Caltrain ride from Palo Alto, so check pickup points before you book. You can browse day tours to Napa, Monterey and Muir Woods and compare group sizes and what each one includes. Inside San Francisco itself, walking tours and bay cruises fill a morning without any planning.

Turning a day trip into an overnight

Monterey, Carmel and wine country are long round trips. If you can spare a night, you get a relaxed dinner and an early start the next morning, when the aquarium is quieter and the tasting rooms are still calm. Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay also work well as a one night break from Peninsula hotel prices, which are steep on weekdays. Compare hotels on the coast and in wine country or look at vacation rentals if you are traveling as a family. If you are deciding where to base yourself for the whole trip, our where to stay guide covers Palo Alto itself.

Trips that combine well

  • Filoli and Half Moon Bay: morning in the gardens, then over Highway 92 to the coast for the afternoon.
  • Santa Cruz and the redwoods: Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park sits just inland from the Boardwalk, so you can do trees in the morning and the beach after lunch.
  • Half Moon Bay, Pescadero and Purisima Creek: a full coast loop with redwoods on the way back over Skyline Boulevard.
  • San Francisco and Muir Woods: only with a car or a tour and only with a parking or shuttle reservation for Muir Woods.

Avoid stacking Monterey with Santa Cruz in one day unless you are happy spending most of it in the car. Each deserves its own outing.

Family attractions

With young children, the closest zoo is Happy Hollow Park and Zoo in San Jose, which pairs a small zoo with kiddie rides. Across the bay, the Oakland Zoo climbs a hillside with a gondola to the top. San Francisco has the San Francisco Zoo near Ocean Beach, the California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park, the hands-on Exploratorium on the Embarcadero and the Aquarium of the Bay at Pier 39. In the East Bay hills, the Chabot Space and Science Center and the Lawrence Hall of Science both have planetariums. For babies to about age 8, the Bay Area Discovery Museum sits at the north foot of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Good to know

  • Cell service drops out in parts of the Santa Cruz Mountains and on the coast south of Half Moon Bay. Download offline maps before you leave.
  • Many state parks charge a vehicle day use fee and some recommend or require advance parking reservations. Check each park's page the week you go.
  • Do not leave bags or electronics visible in a parked car at trailheads, beaches or in San Francisco.
  • Back in Palo Alto, our things to do guide covers the sights close to home for days when you would rather stay put.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best day trip from Palo Alto?

For a first visit, San Francisco is the easiest because Caltrain runs straight to the city in under an hour. If you have a car, Half Moon Bay is the quickest trip to the ocean. Santa Cruz and Monterey are bigger outings that reward an early start.

Can you do day trips from Palo Alto without a car?

Yes, but only a few. Caltrain reaches San Francisco and downtown San Jose directly. The coast, the redwood parks, Filoli and wine country are hard to reach on public transit, so most visitors rent a car or join a guided tour for those.

How far is Palo Alto from the beach?

Half Moon Bay is about 30 miles away and usually takes 40 to 50 minutes by car over Highway 92. Santa Cruz is about 45 miles away over Highway 17 and takes around an hour without heavy traffic.

Is Napa a realistic day trip from Palo Alto?

It is a long day. Napa and Sonoma are roughly 75 to 90 miles away and traffic around San Francisco or Oakland can stretch the drive past two hours each way. A guided tour or an overnight stay makes it much more relaxed.

When is the best time of year for day trips from Palo Alto?

September and October often bring the clearest days on the coast, after the summer fog thins out. Spring is lovely for gardens and green hills. Summer weekends are the busiest time on Highway 17 and Highway 92, so start early.
