This policy explains what information PaloAlto.org handles when you visit, why and what choices you have. It applies to pages on paloalto.org.
What we collect
PaloAlto.org is a static website. There are no user accounts, no comment forms and no newsletter sign-up on the site. We do not ask for your name, email address or payment details.
Like every website, our hosting provider receives standard technical information when your browser requests a page. This includes your IP address, the page requested, the time, your browser type and the referring page. Our host uses this information to deliver pages, keep the service secure and protect against abuse. We may look at aggregated traffic numbers, such as how many people visited a page, to decide what to improve.
Advertising from Google
We show ads served by Google AdSense to pay for research and writing. Ads are labeled "Advertisement" on the page. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads, to measure them and to limit how often you see the same one. Depending on your settings and where you live, those ads may be personalized based on your visits to this and other websites.
Google explains how it uses information from sites that show its ads at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites. You can turn off personalized ads from Google in My Ad Center. Some third-party vendors that serve ads through Google also use cookies. You can opt out of many of them at aboutads.info.
If you visit from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will see a consent message before personalized ads or related cookies are used. You can change your choice later from the same message.
Travel partner script
Our pages load a script from Travelpayouts, an affiliate network that connects us with travel companies such as hotel, tour and transport sites. The script can turn ordinary links to those companies into tracked partner links so the partner knows a booking came from PaloAlto.org. Travelpayouts and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to do this. The prices you pay are the same either way. Their own privacy policies apply to the data they handle.
Partner and affiliate links
Some links on the site lead to travel partners such as hotel booking sites, tour sellers and eSIM providers. When you click one, you leave PaloAlto.org and the partner's own privacy policy applies. Partners or the affiliate networks they use may set cookies on their own sites to record that you arrived from our link, so they can pay us a commission if you make a booking. We do not receive your personal details or payment information from those partners. We typically see only totals, such as the number of bookings.
Browser storage
We do not set cookies ourselves. The site stores a single preference in your browser's local storage if you press the button that pauses the animation on the home page, so the animation stays paused on your next visit. You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser's site data. Cookies set by Google or Travelpayouts are described in the sections above.
Your choices
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, use a content blocker or browse in a private window. The site still works if you do. California residents can limit the sharing of data for ad personalization through Google's ad settings linked above. Many browsers can also send a Global Privacy Control signal that ad providers may honor.
Fonts and images
Fonts and photographs are served from our own domain. We do not embed third-party videos or social media widgets.
Children
The site is a general audience travel and local information guide. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we change how the site handles data, we will update this page and its effective date.
