Labor Day weekend sits at a turning point in Palo Alto. Local kids have been back in school for three weeks, Stanford's summer quarter is over and the new students have not yet arrived. The campus is as quiet as it gets during daylight in September. The weather, meanwhile, is often at its warmest. Early September is the heart of Palo Alto's heat season, so a long weekend here can mean pool time and patio dinners rather than sweaters.

This guide covers the 2027 weekend, from Saturday, September 4 to Monday, September 6. It explains what is open, how transit and campus services change, how to handle heat and fire weather and how to fill the days. For the weeks around it, read Palo Alto in August and Palo Alto in September.

The Festival of the Arts usually lands a week or two before Labor Day. In 2026 it ran August 22 and 23 and the 2027 dates had not been posted in October 2026. Our Festival of the Arts guide will have them. Just after the holiday, Mountain View's Art and Wine Festival has fallen on the weekend after Labor Day in recent years. See our Art and Wine guide.

Heat, fire weather and smoke

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals make September the warmest month in Palo Alto, with an average high of 79.6°F. The month averages about four days at 90°F or more. Heat waves can push far beyond that. The city's all-time record of 108°F was set on September 6, 2022, the day after Labor Day that year. Nights still cool into the 50s, which helps.

Heat also means fire weather. The foothill grass has been dry since late spring. During Red Flag Warnings some trails in the hills can close and Stanford may restrict access to the Dish. Smoke from fires elsewhere in California can drift in and turn the sky orange or gray. Before a long hike or bike ride, check the air quality index. Our guides to heat waves and cooling centers and air quality explain what to watch for.

Heat day checklist

  • Hike before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
  • Carry more water than you think you need. Many trailheads have none.
  • Plan the hottest hours indoors: the Stanford museums, a movie or a long lunch.
  • Check the National Weather Service Bay Area office for heat advisories and Red Flag Warnings.

What is open and closed

  • City offices close for Labor Day, which appears on the city's holiday closures list. Police, fire and dispatch work as usual.
  • Trash pickup. GreenWaste skips collection only on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, so Labor Day pickup should run on schedule.
  • Parking and noise. Residential permit limits are not enforced on city holidays. Leaf blowers and construction are not allowed.
  • Stanford. Most Marguerite lines stop for the holiday, with a few medical center routes still running. Hoover Tower has opened on Labor Day in past years under its holiday policy. In 2026 the Stanford Visitor Center closed for the week of Labor Day and returned to normal hours on September 14, so check before you plan a tour.
  • Shops and restaurants mostly stay open, often on Sunday hours. Stanford Shopping Center posts any holiday hours on its site.

Caltrain's holiday page listed a weekend schedule for Labor Day 2026. Check its holiday service page for 2027.

Football season begins

Stanford football can start before or on Labor Day weekend. In 2026 the Cardinal opened at home against Hawai'i on Saturday, August 29 and hosted Miami on Friday night, September 4. The 2027 schedule had not been released in October 2026. If a home game falls on the holiday weekend, expect full hotels and slow traffic on El Camino Real and Embarcadero Road. Ride Caltrain to Palo Alto station, since the Stanford station did not open for 2026 games. Our athletics guide covers tickets and bag rules.

Staying cool in town

  1. Morning at the bay. The Baylands catch the breeze. Walk or bike the levees early, before the afternoon wind. The first southbound shorebirds are back by September.
  2. Swim. Rinconada Pool is open year-round. Our swimming pools guide has prices and lap times.
  3. Shade in the hills. Foothills Nature Preserve has oak woodland and a lake. Arrive early, since the city caps visitors at 600 at a time.
  4. Markets. Early September is peak season for tomatoes, peaches, melons and figs at both farmers markets.
  5. Evening out. Dinner on a downtown patio once the heat breaks, or a classic film at the Stanford Theatre.

Day trips for the long weekend

On a hot weekend, go somewhere cooler. The redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains stay shady. Big Basin is open for day use with parking reservations recommended. Our redwood forests guide lists closer groves too. The coast at Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz is usually much cooler than town, though Highway 17 and Highway 92 back up on Monday afternoon. Lake Tahoe gets one last summer rush, then quiets down after the holiday.

A sample long weekend

Saturday

Walk to the downtown farmers market before the heat builds to stock up on peaches and tomatoes for a picnic. Spend the warm middle of the day on the Stanford campus, where the Cantor Arts Center is free and air conditioned. It is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but open on weekends. Finish with dinner on a patio downtown as the evening cools.

Sunday

Drive up to Foothills Nature Preserve by 8 a.m. for a shaded loop around Boronda Lake. After lunch, take the afternoon off from the sun at Rinconada Pool or a library. The California Avenue market closes at 1 p.m., so go first if you want to shop it.

Monday

Beat the return traffic by staying local. Walk the Dish at sunrise, then spend a slow morning downtown. If the forecast is hot, head to the redwoods or the coast for the afternoon and come back after the evening rush.

What to pack

  • Summer clothes plus a light layer for evenings in the 50s.
  • A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for exposed trails.
  • A real jacket for any trip to the coast or San Francisco.
  • An N95 mask in case wildfire smoke drifts in.

Hotels and booking

Weekday business travel drops over the holiday, so Palo Alto hotels can be good value on Labor Day weekend unless a home football game or a big conference lands on the same dates. Watch the football schedule once Stanford releases it. Book a refundable rate and compare Palo Alto hotels for Labor Day closer to the date.
