Summer in Palo Alto is the season you can count on. The rain stops in late spring and rarely returns before October. Afternoons are warm, evenings are long and the air cools quickly after sunset. Locals spend these months at free concerts in the parks, on bike rides along the bay and at long dinners on restaurant patios. The city feels slightly emptier than usual, since many Stanford students leave after June and local families head off on their own trips.

This page looks at the whole season. For a full list of events and dates, read our month guides for June, July and August. Here you will find the weather pattern, the events that set the rhythm of the summer, the hazards worth knowing about and how to book a stay. We give dates only where organizers have published them.

Summer weather in numbers

These are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Palo Alto station, the same data used in our weather guide.

MonthAverage highAverage lowAverage rain
June78.5°F52.7°F0.10 inches
July79.4°F55.7°F0.00 inches
August78.7°F55.3°F0.03 inches

The numbers barely move from month to month. What changes is the feel of the day. June often starts under a thin gray marine layer that burns off by late morning. July and August mornings are more often clear. Across all three months, a breeze off the bay arrives in the afternoon and the temperature drops fast once the sun goes down. A day that peaks near 80°F can fall into the mid 50s by dawn.

Heat waves are part of summer, though September usually brings more of them. A typical July or August has about two days at 90°F or higher. The foothills along Page Mill Road and Arastradero Road run warmer than the flats near the bay. Our guide to heat waves and cooling centers explains what the city does on the hottest days.

Sunny here, foggy there

The most common surprise for summer visitors is how different the weather is a short drive away. Cold ocean water builds a deep layer of fog along the coast. It pours through the Golden Gate and over low gaps in the hills. The Santa Cruz Mountains block most of it from Palo Alto. On a typical summer afternoon, downtown Palo Alto sits in the upper 70s under blue sky while western San Francisco and the beach at Half Moon Bay sit in the 60s or below under gray cloud.

Use that to your advantage. Go to the coast or the city when you want to cool off. Head to the redwoods for shade. Stay on the bay side when you want sun. Our Half Moon Bay guide and redwood forests guide cover the best summer escapes. Bring a real jacket for either one.

Commencement opens the season

The first half of June belongs to Stanford. Finals, move-out and commencement fill hotels from Redwood City to Mountain View and slow traffic around campus. The main ceremony is on Sunday, June 13, 2027. If you are not coming for graduation, plan your trip for after June 14. Our commencement guide covers the weekend.

Free evenings in the parks

The heart of a Palo Alto summer is free and outdoors. Twilight Concerts bring tribute bands and local acts to the parks on selected Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. Family movies play on the Mitchell Park field on Friday nights. Our summer events guide lists the series and where to find each year's lineup, which usually appears in late spring.

July 4 and late August

Palo Alto marks Independence Day with a community festival rather than a parade or fireworks. July 4, 2027 falls on a Sunday and the federal holiday is observed on Monday, July 5. Fireworks of every kind are illegal in Palo Alto. In late August, the Chamber of Commerce's Festival of the Arts fills University Avenue with artists' booths for a weekend. In 2026 it ran August 22 and 23. See our Festival of the Arts guide for the 2027 dates once they are posted.

School and university calendars

School calendars shape summer traffic and crowds more than any event. Palo Alto Unified's last day of the 2026 to 2027 year is June 3, 2027 and the new year starts on August 12, 2027, according to the district's published calendars. Between those dates, school-run traffic disappears and many local families leave town.

Stanford runs an optional summer quarter, listed from June 21 to August 14, 2027. Campus is far quieter than during the academic year, but summer programs, sports camps and conferences keep some buildings and dining halls busy. New students do not arrive until mid-September.

Fire season and air quality

By June the grass on the foothills has dried to gold. That is beautiful in low evening light and also the start of fire season. Smoking is banned in Palo Alto's parks and open space preserves. During Red Flag Warnings some trails in the hills can close and Stanford may restrict access to the Dish for fire weather, heat or poor air. Smoke from distant wildfires can also drift into the Bay Area. Check AirNow before a long hike or bike ride on a hazy day.

Making the most of the outdoors

  1. Hike early. Exposed trails such as the Dish and Pearson-Arastradero have little shade. Start before 9 a.m.
  2. Ride the bay in the morning. The levee trails at the Baylands are flat and calm before the afternoon wind arrives.
  3. Seek shade in the hills. Foothills Nature Preserve has oak woodland and a lake. It caps visitors at 600 at a time, so arrive early on weekends.
  4. Swim. Rinconada Pool is open year-round and busiest in summer.
  5. Picnic before a concert. Pick up supplies at a weekend farmers market, then claim a spot on the grass before the Twilight Concert starts.

What to pack

  • Light clothes for the day and a sweater or light jacket for evenings, which cool into the 50s.
  • A warm jacket for any day trip to San Francisco or the coast.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Summer shade is scarce on the trails.
  • A refillable water bottle. Many trailheads have no water.
  • A blanket or low chair for outdoor concerts and movie nights.

Hotels and booking tips

Summer hotel demand comes in waves. Commencement week in June is the hardest booking of the year. After that, weekday business travel eases during peak vacation weeks while summer programs, conferences and leisure travelers keep weekends busy. Palo Alto's business hotels often price weekends below weekdays, so a Friday to Sunday stay can be good value. Book a refundable rate as soon as your dates are firm and compare Palo Alto hotels for summer again a few weeks before you travel.

Good to know

  • Sunset is around 8:30 p.m. in late June and early July, so outdoor evenings run long.
  • The Cantor Arts Center is free and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays all summer.
  • Free city events can change with budgets or weather. Check the city calendar the week before.
