Summer in Palo Alto is long, dry and mostly sunny. The evenings stay light until after 8 p.m. and the city makes the most of them. Its parks host free concerts and movie nights. California Avenue closes to cars for monthly street parties. University Avenue turns into an outdoor gallery for one weekend in August. Over at Stanford, the jazz festival and the big outdoor shows at Frost Amphitheater keep the campus busy while most students are away.
This guide covers each summer event, with the 2026 details as published by the organizers. Most 2027 dates were not out in October 2026, so we describe the usual timing and link to each organizer. For the year as a whole, see our events calendar. For what to pack, our weather guide covers summer temperatures and evening cool-downs.

Twilight Concert Series
The city's best summer tradition is also its simplest. On selected Saturday evenings, the Palo Alto Children's Theatre puts on free outdoor concerts in city parks. Shows start at 6:30 p.m. and run about 90 minutes. People spread blankets on the grass early and a taqueria food truck sells dinner. Bringing your own picnic is common too.
The 2026 series had four shows:
- June 27: Heartless, a Heart tribute, at Mitchell Park.
- July 11: Summer Night City, an ABBA tribute, at Rinconada Park.
- July 18: Fleetwood Mask, a Fleetwood Mac tribute, at Rinconada Park, with the a cappella group Business Casual opening at 5 p.m.
- August 8: Legally Blue, a blues band, at Rinconada Park.
The 2027 lineup usually appears on the city's Twilight Concert Series page in late spring. Bands occasionally cancel for weather or other reasons. The Children's Theatre posts last-minute changes on its social media. Our guides to Mitchell Park and Rinconada Park cover parking and playgrounds.
Fourth of July Chili Cook-off
Palo Alto celebrates Independence Day with a community festival rather than a parade. The city's 4th of July Chili Cook Off and Summer Festival is held at Mitchell Park, 600 East Meadow Drive. In 2026, the nation's 250th anniversary, it ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and was free.
Teams compete for Best Overall Chili, Best Vegetarian Chili, Best Booth, Best Spirit and a People's Choice award. Visitors get free chili tasting. Bay Area food trucks fill in the rest of lunch. Adults can buy beer and margaritas. Kids get games, activities and inflatables. In 2026 the festival also included a sensory-friendly tent with calming activities. Live music came from the Good Time Collective. The city's listing did not include fireworks. Details for 2027 should appear on the city's event page in early summer.
Palo Alto Festival of the Arts
For one weekend in late August, University Avenue closes to cars and fills with artists' booths. The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts is hosted by the Palo Alto Chamber of Commerce with the City of Palo Alto as co-sponsor. The 43rd festival ran on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. across nine blocks of downtown. It featured about 250 booths of fine art, live music and a street painting expo, where artists chalk large works directly on the pavement over the weekend.
Admission is free. Go early on Saturday for the best choice of art and the coolest temperatures, or late on Sunday to see the street paintings finished. The 2027 dates had not been announced in October 2026. Check the city calendar or the Chamber of Commerce in early summer.
Stanford Jazz Festival
The Stanford Jazz Workshop has run summer jazz camps on campus since 1972. Its faculty and guests perform in the Stanford Jazz Festival, which runs for about six weeks. The 2026 festival, the 54th, ran from June 21 to July 31 with 26 listed events, many in Dinkelspiel Auditorium. The lineup included the Branford Marsalis Quartet, pianists Billy Childs and George Cables and singer Luciana Souza. Expect ticketed evening concerts several nights a week through July. The 2027 lineup is usually announced in spring.
Frost Amphitheater and Stanford in summer
Frost Amphitheater is the biggest summer stage on the Peninsula, a grassy bowl on campus that holds about 8,000 people. Stanford Live and its partner Goldenvoice book major touring acts from late spring into early fall. Many shows are ticketed through AXS, so start from the Stanford Live website. The 2027 lineup had not been announced in October 2026.
Summer also brings Stanford's commencement weekend, June 10 to 13, 2027. It is wonderful if you are graduating and a hotel squeeze if you are not. See our commencement guide and book rooms early if your trip overlaps.
More summer events
Family Movie Nights
The city runs free outdoor movies on Friday evenings on the Mitchell Park athletic field. The 2026 series had six screenings between June 5 and August 14, from Elio to The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Seating opens at 7 p.m. and films start at sunset. Bring a blanket, since lawn chairs are allowed only in the back three rows.
Thursday Live on Cal Ave
From May through September, the city and the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation host free evening events on the car-free block of California Avenue. Expect local bands, games and giveaways from 5 to 8 p.m. on one Thursday each month.
Art Center festivals
The Palo Alto Art Center hosts its Clay and Glass Festival in July, with ceramic and glass artists selling work on the grounds. It also runs summer art camps for kids.
Theater
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley often opens a summer show at the Lucie Stern Theatre. In 2026 it was the world premiere of The Employee Dharma Handbook, from July 8 to August 2. See our theater guide for the current season.
Good to know
- Summer days are warm and dry, but evenings cool fast. Bring a sweater to every outdoor concert.
- Arrive 30 to 45 minutes early at Twilight Concerts and movie nights for a good patch of grass.
- Both farmers markets run every weekend all summer. See our farmers markets guide.
- For a cooler escape, the trails in the foothills and at the Baylands are best early in the morning.
Planning a summer weekend
A classic Palo Alto summer Saturday starts at the downtown farmers market, moves to a hike or bike ride and ends at a Twilight Concert with a picnic. Sunday brings the California Avenue market, then perhaps a jazz concert at Stanford. Biking between all of it is easy on the city's flat bike boulevards and you can rent a bike for the weekend. If you need a room, especially on commencement or Festival of the Arts weekends, compare hotels early.
