On this page
June is when Palo Alto turns the page from school year to summer. The month opens with final exams and the last days of class. It peaks with Stanford's commencement weekend, the single busiest weekend of the year for local hotels. It ends with free concerts in the parks, movie nights on the grass and evenings that stay light until after 8:30 p.m. Rain is almost unheard of. The hills are fully gold.
The key to a good June trip is timing. Arrive on commencement weekend without a plan and you will find full hotels and slow roads. Arrive a week later and you get long, easy summer days. This guide covers the June 2027 weather, what is in season, events with published or usual dates, the school calendars, hotel tips and ideas for day trips and a weekend. For other months, see our weather guide.
June weather
The figures below are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Palo Alto weather station (USC00046646), the same source as our weather page.
| Measure | June normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 78.5°F |
| Average low | 52.7°F |
| Average rainfall | 0.10 inches |
| Days with measurable rain | Less than 1 |
| Days reaching 90°F | About 3 |
A typical June day starts cool and sometimes gray. The marine layer, often called June gloom, drifts in overnight and usually burns off by late morning. Afternoons are sunny and in the upper 70s, with a breeze off the bay. A few days in a typical June climb into the 90s.
The summer solstice falls on June 21, 2027, so this is the month of the longest days. The difference between Palo Alto and the coast is at its most striking now. San Francisco and Half Moon Bay can sit in fog all day while Palo Alto is warm and clear. The National Weather Service Bay Area office posts heat advisories when needed.
What is in season
Golden hills and fire season
By June the grass in the foothills has turned gold. It is a classic California look and it photographs well in evening light. It also means the fire season has started. During Red Flag Warnings, Stanford can restrict access to the Dish. City open space preserves post fire rules too. Check before you go and never smoke on trails.
Late wildflowers on the ridge
Down low the flowers are done, but on the ridge some late bloomers such as farewell-to-spring carry on into June. Russian Ridge along Skyline Boulevard is the place to look.
Birds
June is chick season at the Baylands. Stilts, avocets and ducks raise young around the ponds, while terns fish in the sloughs. Most migrants have gone north, so the marsh feels quieter. Evening walks on the levees are cool and breezy.
Farmers market produce
Summer fruit arrives in force: cherries, apricots, the first peaches and nectarines, blueberries and other berries. Early sweet corn and tomatoes start showing up late in the month. Both markets run every weekend. See our farmers markets guide.

Events in June 2027
Stanford commencement
Stanford's calendar lists Commencement on Sunday, June 13, 2027, in Stanford Stadium. Saturday, June 12 brings the baccalaureate at Frost Amphitheater, Senior Class Day and the Law, Business and Medicine ceremonies. Commencement weekend typically starts on Thursday, so most families plan around June 10 to 13. The undergraduate Wacky Walk into the stadium opens the Sunday ceremony. Official details are on the commencement website. Our commencement weekend guide covers tickets, parking and what to bring.
Summer events begin
Most summer series had not posted 2027 dates in October 2026. Here is the usual timing, with 2026 dates for reference.
- Family Movie Nights. Free outdoor films on Friday evenings on the Mitchell Park athletic field. The 2026 series started June 5.
- Stanford Jazz Festival. About six weeks of concerts on campus from late June. The 2026 festival opened June 21. Check stanfordjazz.org in spring.
- Twilight Concert Series. Free Saturday evening concerts at 6:30 p.m. in city parks. The first 2026 show was June 27 at Mitchell Park. The lineup appears on the city's Twilight page.
- Thursday Live on Cal Ave. One free Thursday evening event a month on California Avenue, May through September.
- Frost Amphitheater. Large outdoor concerts on campus. Lineups are announced through the year on the Stanford Live site.
Our summer events guide covers each series in detail.
Juneteenth and Father's Day
Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19, 2027. In 2026 the city did not run its own event but pointed residents to nearby celebrations, including a multi-day festival in East Palo Alto, a celebration in Menlo Park, the seventh annual Los Altos Juneteenth Festival and a storytime at Mitchell Park Library. Father's Day is Sunday, June 20.
Holidays and school calendars
Dates come from Stanford's 2026 to 2027 academic calendar and the PAUSD school year calendar.
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| June 1 to 3 | PAUSD minimum days |
| Wednesday, June 2 | Last day of Stanford spring quarter classes |
| Thursday, June 3 | PAUSD last day of school, early release |
| June 4 to 9 | Stanford final exams |
| Friday, June 11 | Stanford housing closes for the academic year |
| Saturday, June 12 | Baccalaureate and several school ceremonies |
| Sunday, June 13 | Stanford Commencement |
| Saturday, June 19 | Juneteenth |
| Monday, June 21 | Stanford summer quarter begins |
The first half of June is intense around campus. Finals, move-out and commencement bring heavy traffic on El Camino Real, Embarcadero Road, Sand Hill Road and Campus Drive, especially on June 11 to 13. Once PAUSD lets out on June 3, school-run traffic disappears and many local families leave on vacation. After commencement, the town settles into its slower summer rhythm, with summer programs and conferences keeping campus active.
What to pack
- Sun protection. Hats, sunscreen and sunglasses, especially for the open stadium on commencement morning.
- A light layer for gray mornings and evenings in the low 50s.
- A real jacket for San Francisco or the coast, where June fog can keep temperatures in the 50s and 60s.
- A refillable water bottle for hikes and outdoor events, if venue bag rules allow it.
- A blanket or low chair for Twilight Concerts and movie nights.
Hotel demand and booking tips
June has the sharpest price swings of the year in Palo Alto. Commencement weekend, June 10 to 13, 2027, fills every hotel near campus and lifts rates across the Peninsula. The week before brings families for finals and move-out. Other big events can stack on top. Apple's WWDC, for example, has been held in early June at Apple Park in Cupertino in recent years. After mid-month, demand eases on weekends but summer conferences and programs keep weekday rates firm.
- For commencement, book now. Lock in a refundable rate for the whole weekend and keep looking for better options. You can compare hotels for commencement weekend today.
- Know the walkable options. Hotels along El Camino Real near Palm Drive are closest to campus. See staying near Stanford.
- Widen the map. Menlo Park, Mountain View and Redwood City are all on Caltrain.
- Consider a house. Large graduation groups often do better with a rental home. You can search rental homes for graduation.
- Visiting for something else? Avoid June 10 to 13 if you can. The week after is far easier.
Day trips for June
- Santa Cruz. The Boardwalk's rides run daily in summer and the beach is at its liveliest. Read our Santa Cruz guide.
- San Francisco. An easy Caltrain trip, but pack a jacket. The city is often 10 to 20 degrees cooler than Palo Alto in summer. See our San Francisco guide or book a guided city tour.
- Redwood forests. On hot days, the shade in a redwood canyon is the best air conditioning around. Our redwood forests guide lists parks within an hour.
- Napa and Sonoma. Vineyards are green and the evenings are long. Start early to beat the inland heat.
Outdoor activities for June
- Morning hikes. Hit the Dish or the foothill preserves early, before the sun is high. Bring water and watch for fire closures.
- Mitchell Park. Magical Bridge Playground, movie nights and the first Twilight Concert make it the center of summer life. See our Mitchell Park guide.
- Evening bike rides. With sunset around 8:30 p.m. late in the month, there is time for a long ride on the Bay Trail after work.
- Baylands at sunset. The breeze off the bay makes it the coolest spot in town on a warm evening.
- Picnics and outdoor dining. Downtown patios and car-free California Avenue are at their best on warm June evenings.

If you only have a weekend
Saturday
Start at the downtown farmers market for cherries and apricots. Spend the late morning on campus at the Main Quad and the Cantor Arts Center, unless it is commencement weekend, when campus is crowded and parking is tight. After lunch, rest through the warmest hours, then head to a Twilight Concert if one is scheduled. Otherwise, take a sunset walk at the Baylands.
Sunday
Hike the Dish early before the heat. Browse the California Avenue farmers market and stay for lunch on the car-free block. In the afternoon, drive to the redwoods for shade or take Caltrain to San Francisco with a jacket in your bag. For the height of summer, read Palo Alto in July. For May Fete and the last green hills, see Palo Alto in May.
