July is Palo Alto at its most predictable. The rain is gone, the hills have turned the color of straw and the evenings stay light until well after 8 p.m. Locals spend the month outside, at park concerts, on bike rides along the bay and at long dinners on restaurant patios. The city feels a little quieter than usual. Many Stanford students are away and plenty of families leave town for summer trips.
This guide covers the weather, what is in season, the July events worth planning around and what to pack. It also has booking advice, day trips that suit the month and a simple weekend plan. Event dates are given only where organizers have published them. When a 2027 date is not out yet, we describe the usual timing and link to the organizer.
July weather in Palo Alto
The figures below are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Palo Alto station (USC00046646), the same data our weather guide uses. Sunrise and sunset times are approximate and given in Pacific Daylight Time.
| Measure | July normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 79.4°F |
| Average low | 55.7°F |
| Average rainfall | 0.00 inches |
| Days with 0.10 inch of rain or more | 0.0 |
| Days at 90°F or hotter | About 1.9 |
| Sunrise and sunset | About 5:50 a.m. and 8:33 p.m. on July 1, about 6:10 a.m. and 8:20 p.m. by month's end |
A normal July day starts in the mid 50s, sometimes under a thin gray marine layer that burns off by late morning. Afternoons reach the upper 70s or low 80s. By 3 or 4 p.m. a breeze usually blows in off the bay, which keeps the Baylands cooler and windier than downtown. Heat waves are less common than in September, but a few days in the 90s are normal. The foothills along Page Mill Road and Arastradero Road run warmer than the flats near the bay.
For live conditions, the National Weather Service Bay Area office posts forecasts, heat advisories and fire weather warnings.
What is in season
Golden hills and fire season
The grass on the foothills dried out in late spring. By July the slopes above Interstate 280 are fully gold, dotted with dark green oaks. It is a classic California look and it photographs best in the low light of early morning or the hour before sunset.
Dry grass also means fire season has begun. Smoking is banned in Palo Alto's parks and open space preserves. During Red Flag Warnings some trails in the hills can close. Stanford may restrict access to the Dish for fire weather, heat or poor air quality. Check the status of any trail before you drive up and check AirNow if there is smoke in the forecast from fires elsewhere in the state.
At the Baylands
Summer is the quiet season for birds on the bay. The big flocks of winter ducks are gone. Black-necked stilts and American avocets stay around the ponds and the first shorebirds heading south can show up by late July. Afternoon wind is the main thing to plan for. Walk the levees in the morning when the water is calm.
At the farmers markets
Both of the city's farmers markets run every week of the year. The downtown market is on Saturday mornings on Gilman Street and the California Avenue market is on Sunday mornings. July brings peaches, nectarines, plums, berries, sweet corn and the first good tomatoes, with melons arriving toward the end of the month. Our farmers markets guide has the hours and locations.

4th of July Chili Cook Off
Palo Alto marks Independence Day with a community festival rather than a parade. The city's 4th of July Chili Cook Off and Summer Festival fills Mitchell Park on East Meadow Drive. In 2026 it ran from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free chili tasting, food trucks, live music and kids' activities. The city's listing did not include fireworks. July 4, 2027 falls on a Sunday. The 2027 program had not been posted when this guide was written, so check the city's event page in early summer.
Twilight Concerts and movie nights
The Palo Alto Children's Theatre runs free Twilight Concerts on selected Saturday evenings at 6:30 p.m. In 2026 July brought an ABBA tribute on July 11 and a Fleetwood Mac tribute on July 18, both at Rinconada Park. The 2027 lineup usually appears on the city's Twilight Concert Series page in late spring. On Friday nights the city also screens free family movies on the Mitchell Park field at sunset. Our summer events guide has the full rundown.
Jazz, ceramics and big concerts
The Stanford Jazz Festival fills July with ticketed evening shows on campus. In 2026 it ran from June 21 to July 31. The Palo Alto Art Center hosts its Clay and Glass Festival in July, with ceramic and glass artists selling work on the grounds. For large touring acts, Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View is the main summer venue nearby and you can check Shoreline concert tickets for the season's lineup. Frost Amphitheater at Stanford also hosts summer shows, ticketed through AXS.
Holidays and school calendars
Independence Day is the only federal holiday in July. When it falls on a weekend, as it does on Sunday, July 4, 2027, the observed holiday moves to the nearest weekday, which in 2027 is Monday, July 5. Expect a long weekend of lighter commute traffic and busier parks.
School is out. Palo Alto Unified's 2026 to 2027 year ends on June 3, 2027. The 2027 to 2028 year begins on Thursday, August 12, 2027, according to the district's published calendars. Stanford runs an optional summer quarter. For 2027 the university lists summer classes from June 21 to August 14. Campus is far quieter than during the academic year, though summer camps, programs and conferences keep some buildings and dining halls busy.
What to pack
- Light layers. Shorts and T-shirts for the afternoon plus a sweater or light jacket for the morning and for outdoor concerts after sunset.
- A real jacket for day trips. San Francisco and the coast are often 15 to 25 degrees cooler than Palo Alto and wrapped in fog.
- Sun protection. A hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Shade is scarce on the Dish and on the bay levees.
- A water bottle for every hike. Many trailheads have no water.
- A blanket or low chair if you plan to catch a Twilight Concert or movie night.
Hotel demand and booking tips
July is a mixed month for hotels. Weekday business travel softens around the holiday and during peak family vacation weeks, but summer conferences, Stanford programs and campus visits keep demand steady. Leisure travelers fill rooms on weekends. The Fourth of July weekend is usually busy at hotels near the freeways as families travel through the region.
A few tips help. Palo Alto business hotels often price weekends below weekdays, so a Friday to Sunday stay can be good value. If your dates are fixed, compare Palo Alto hotels early and choose a refundable rate. Families or groups staying a week or more often do better with a vacation rental in a nearby town. Our where to stay guide compares the main areas.
Outdoor activities for July
- Hike early. Start before 9 a.m. on exposed trails such as the Dish or Pearson-Arastradero. By early afternoon the hills can be hot.
- Go up into the shade. Foothills Nature Preserve has oak woodland and a lake. It caps how many people can be inside at one time, so arrive early on summer weekends.
- Ride the bay. The levee trails at the Baylands Nature Preserve are flat and open. Ride in the morning before the wind picks up.
- Picnic and listen. Pair a farmers market haul with a Saturday Twilight Concert in the park.
- Swim. The city runs outdoor pools in summer, including Rinconada Pool. Check the city's aquatics page for hours and fees.

Day trips that suit July
Heat inland and fog on the coast shape July day trips. The trick is to pick a destination that suits the weather you want.
- Redwoods for shade. The tall forests of the Santa Cruz Mountains stay cool even on hot days. Our redwood forests guide covers Big Basin, Muir Woods and closer groves. Big Basin is open for day use and parking reservations are recommended.
- The coast for cool air. Half Moon Bay is often gray and in the 60s in July. That is a relief on a hot day, but bring a jacket.
- San Francisco by train. Caltrain makes San Francisco easy without a car. Expect fog and wind on the west side of the city.
If you only have a weekend
- Saturday morning: coffee downtown, then the farmers market on Gilman Street.
- Late morning: walk the Stanford campus while it is quiet. Start at the Main Quad and the Cantor Arts Center, which is free and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
- Afternoon: rest out of the heat, then pick up picnic supplies.
- Saturday evening: a Twilight Concert if one is scheduled, or dinner on a downtown patio.
- Sunday morning: an early hike on the Dish or at Foothills Nature Preserve.
- Sunday afternoon: the California Avenue farmers market closes at 1 p.m., so go first, then end the day with a sunset walk at the Baylands.

- Hoover Tower's observation deck is closed from August 14, 2026 to January 25, 2027. Check Stanford's site for summer 2027 hours.
- Free city events can change with budgets or weather. Check the city calendar the week before.
- Evenings cool quickly once the sun drops. Bring a layer to every outdoor event.
