Every bank, cleaner, garage, child care center, vet and mail counter in our directory, checked against its own website, plus a practical guide to running errands in Palo Alto.
A city of about 68,000 people needs a lot of quiet infrastructure. Shirts need pressing, brakes need fixing, toddlers need somewhere to go at 8 a.m. and dogs need their shots. OpenStreetMap, the open map our directory starts from, tags about 110 everyday service businesses inside Palo Alto. Roughly 30 are bank branches. The rest include auto repair shops and dealers, gas stations, dry cleaners, child care centers, veterinarians and mail counters.
Below this guide, every business we have verified appears automatically as a card. The guide covers where these services cluster, how to check licenses and registrations and how to plan around hours and parking. It is written for new residents as much as visitors. For the bigger picture of city services such as utilities and garbage, see our living in Palo Alto guide.
The category covers six kinds of business:
Money: bank branches, credit unions and ATMs
Clothes care: dry cleaners, laundries, tailors and shoe repair
Cars: auto repair, tires, oil changes, Smog Check stations, car washes, dealerships and rentals
Children: child care centers, preschools and after-school programs
Pets: veterinarians and boarding
Mail and printing: post offices, pack-and-ship stores and copy shops
Errands in Palo Alto follow the main roads. Map data shows a few clear patterns.
El Camino Real
El Camino Real carries more service businesses than any other street in the city. Bank branches, gas stations, oil change shops, dry cleaners and veterinary hospitals line it from Stanford south to the Mountain View border. The southern stretch through Barron Park and south Palo Alto has the most auto shops and several car dealerships.
Downtown and California Avenue
Downtown has the densest group of bank branches, mostly on University Avenue and Hamilton Avenue, plus dry cleaners, pack-and-ship stores and the historic post office. California Avenue has a smaller version of the same mix. Both are walkable from Caltrain, so you can drop off dry cleaning on the way to the train.
Midtown and Middlefield Road
Middlefield Road through Midtown is the residents' errand street. Dry cleaners, a veterinary hospital, banks and a mail counter sit near the grocery stores. Parking is easy compared with downtown. See our Midtown guide.
Embarcadero Road and San Antonio Road
Several new car dealerships cluster on Embarcadero Road near U.S. 101. More dealers and a group of repair and Smog Check shops sit near San Antonio Road in the south of the city.

Banks and credit unions
Most large national banks have at least one Palo Alto branch, many downtown and on El Camino Real. Credit unions work differently from banks. They are member-owned and you must qualify to join, usually through where you live or work, a school or employer link or a family member who belongs. Each credit union publishes its own field of membership, so read it before you apply.
To confirm that an institution is federally insured, use the NCUA's Research a Credit Union tool for credit unions and the FDIC website for banks. The NCUA says share insurance covers $250,000 per depositor at federally insured credit unions. Branch services such as safe deposit boxes, notary help or coin counting vary from one branch to the next, so call ahead if you need one. This page does not give financial advice.

Dry cleaning, laundry and tailoring
Dry cleaners sit in every errand cluster: downtown, California Avenue, Midtown and El Camino Real. Many also do alterations. Several list tailoring as a main service. A few tips:
Ask about turnaround times. Same-day service often depends on a morning drop-off.
Point out stains and fragile trim when you drop off.
Ask whether the cleaner offers pickup and delivery or uses a 24-hour drop box.
Allow extra time for alterations before weddings, graduations and holidays.
Auto repair, tires and Smog Check
California requires auto repair dealers to register with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. Its site links to the state License Search, where you can confirm a shop's registration is current. It also has a locator for Smog Check stations. Before any work starts, ask for a written estimate and ask the shop to call you before it goes over it. Keep the final invoice.
Dealership service departments handle warranty and recall work for their brands. Independent shops often specialize in certain makes, so check the shop's site for the brands it services. Plan for time without your car. Ask whether the shop offers a loaner car or a shuttle if you need one.
Child care and preschools
Palo Alto's child care options range from infant centers to preschools and after-school programs. Some after-school programs run on elementary school campuses. Every licensed child care center and family child care home in California is regulated by the Department of Social Services. Its care facility search lets you look up a program's license. Ask each program for its license number before you enroll.
When you contact a program, ask about the ages it serves, its daily schedule, its calendar of closed days and whether it keeps a waitlist. Directory pages repeat only what each program publishes about ages, program types and enrollment. We do not compare programs. For schools, see our schools and universities guide.

Veterinarians and pet care
Veterinary hospitals cluster on El Camino Real and Middlefield Road. Veterinarians are licensed by the California Veterinary Medical Board, which is also on the state License Search. Ask your regular vet where it sends patients after hours so you know before an emergency.
Dog owners have one more errand. California requires every dog four months and older to be licensed and vaccinated against rabies. In Palo Alto, licenses come from the Police Department's Animal Control Division, which takes mailed applications at 3281 East Bayshore Road. You need a current rabies certificate from your vet. For off-leash areas and trail rules, see our guide to dog parks.
Post offices and shipping
The downtown post office at 380 Hamilton Avenue is a 1932 Birge Clark building and a local landmark in its own right. On the Stanford campus, the White Plaza post office closes on October 31, 2026. For other locations and current hours, use the USPS website. Private pack-and-ship stores downtown, in Midtown and at Town & Country Village handle packages, mailboxes and printing, often with longer hours.
Choosing a service and getting there
For any service, a few checks go a long way: confirm the license or registration where the state requires one, read the price list or ask for a written quote and ask about turnaround time. Many service businesses close earlier than shops and some close on Sundays.
Downtown errands use roughly 20 city garages and lots. Short visits are generally free with posted time limits. The City of Palo Alto parking page has the rules. Midtown, El Camino Real and the shopping centers have their own lots. The Palo Alto and California Avenue Caltrain stations sit within a few minutes' walk of dozens of service businesses. Our getting around guide covers buses and bikes.
How we check service listings
Every page in this category follows the same process. We start from OpenStreetMap data for the name, location and any posted hours. Then an editor opens the business's own website and confirms that the Palo Alto location is current, with a live location page, recent dates or online booking. If we cannot confirm a business is open, we do not publish a page.
The verified businesses appear below in alphabetical order. Each card leads to a page with the address, nearest Caltrain stop, parking notes, hours where we could confirm them and what else is nearby. More are added as editors verify them.
The downtown post office is at 380 Hamilton Avenue, in a 1932 building designed by Birge Clark. On the Stanford campus, the White Plaza post office closes on October 31, 2026. Check the USPS website for current hours and other locations.
