About the branch

Stanford Federal Credit Union's Embarcadero Road branch is at 1860 Embarcadero Road, on the east side of Palo Alto right off Highway 101. Stanford FCU is a member-owned credit union and its home page says membership is open to everyone, not only people tied to Stanford. Its main phone line, 888-723-7328, is answered around the clock.

The key thing to know before you go is that this is a cashless branch. The credit union says it offers full service here except for cash transactions. An ATM outside handles cash. Stanford FCU also has a downtown branch, listed in our directory as Stanford FCU on University Avenue.

This page describes the branch and the services the credit union lists. It is not financial advice.

Services

  • Accounts: checking and savings for individuals, plus business accounts and services.
  • Loans: personal, auto and mortgage loans.
  • ATM: located outside the branch. Stanford FCU says its ATMs and digital banking are always open.
  • Notary: free for members at its branches. An appointment is recommended and you need photo ID.
  • Coin deposits: accepted if the coins are already rolled. There is no coin-counting machine.
  • Shared branching: members of other credit unions in the CO-OP network can make deposits, loan payments and transfers, get account information and buy cashier's checks. The credit union lists a $500 cap on cash withdrawals for shared branch users, but since this branch is cashless, ask first what it can do.

Stanford FCU does not offer safe deposit boxes at any branch. If you need one, look at a bank instead.

For everything else, the credit union points members to its digital banking, which it says is always available. Routine jobs such as transfers, balance checks and many loan payments can be done online, which leaves branch visits for paperwork, notary appointments and conversations with staff about a loan or a new account. Its phone line, 888-723-7328, is open 24 hours a day if you have a question before you make the trip.

Hours and holidays

The lobby is open Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so you can stop by before a 9 a.m. start. The branch is normally closed on weekends, though it has posted special Saturday hours for events in the past. It closes on federal holidays unless special hours are announced. Stanford FCU lists 2026 closures that include Thanksgiving on November 26 and 27 and Christmas Day. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve the branch closes at 2 p.m.

Beyond this branch

The credit union says members can use about 6,000 shared branches and about 30,000 fee-free ATMs nationwide through the CO-OP network. Some of its Bay Area branches redeem Series E, EE and I U.S. Savings Bonds. That reach helps if you travel or move away and want to keep your account.

Getting there

Stanford FCU describes the branch as right off Highway 101, which makes it an easy stop for drivers. It is near Baylands Nature Preserve and the city's Baylands Golf Links at 1875 Embarcadero Road, covered in our golf guide. There is no nearby Caltrain stop, so most people drive or bike. Our biking guide covers cycling around town.

Tips

  • Use the outside ATM for cash, or call ahead to find a branch that handles teller cash.
  • Book a notary slot ahead so a notary is on hand when you arrive.
  • Roll coins before you bring them in.
  • Check the credit union's branch page for holiday hours late in the year.

Who the branch suits

This branch suits members who drive and want to handle account business, loan questions or a notary visit without hunting for parking downtown. Its location off Highway 101 makes it convenient for people who live near the freeway or commute along it. Anyone who needs to withdraw cash from a teller, or who wants a safe deposit box, should plan around the cashless setup and the lack of boxes. Credit union members from elsewhere can use the CO-OP shared branch services, but should call first to check what is available at a cashless branch.
