About Canopy

Canopy is a nonprofit that plants and looks after trees in Palo Alto and nearby communities. Its stated mission is to collaborate with communities to grow and sustain equitable urban forests for all. The group focuses its planting and care where tree cover is thin, which in this area means south Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, Belle Haven, North Fair Oaks and parts of Mountain View.

The office is at 3921 East Bayshore Road, on the first floor of the Peninsula Conservation Center building. OpenStreetMap lists a suite number. Canopy's own pages give the street address only. The general phone line is 650-964-6110. Most of Canopy's work happens out in neighborhoods, so plan to meet the group at an event or call before stopping by.

Canopy describes four strategies: engage, educate, steward and advocate. In practice that means planting with residents and schools, teaching about trees, caring for young trees until they establish and supporting tree protection policies.

Programs

South Palo Alto Tree Initiative

Canopy says it has planted more than 1,000 trees in south Palo Alto with the City of Palo Alto since the program began in 2016. The program grew out of the city's Urban Forest Master Plan work, which found that north Palo Alto had about 22 percent more tree canopy than the south. Canopy defines south Palo Alto as every neighborhood south of Oregon Expressway. Residents there can sign up online and receive:

  • A consultation of up to 30 minutes at home with a certified arborist
  • A free tree suited to the front or back yard
  • Free installation by volunteers at a neighborhood planting
  • Palo Alto tree care instructions plus checkups and pruning advice for up to three years

Plantings in other communities

The Branching Out program plants trees in East Palo Alto, North Fair Oaks and Belle Haven. Canopy also runs plantings in Mountain View and young tree care programs in East Palo Alto and Palo Alto.

Education

Canopy offers K-12 lesson plans, a Teen Urban Foresters program, a Community Forestry School and workshops and webinars. Its online tree library describes species that grow well locally. Canopy also keeps a list of arborists for residents who need to hire one.

Ways to get involved

Canopy's free neighborhood tree walks take place on select Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. A certified arborist leads each walk along a neighborhood route and shares tips on tree care and species choice. Sign-up happens on Canopy's website. New dates are posted there as they are set.

The online calendar listed current events at the end of October 2026. One was the weekly Youth Urban Forestry Stewards planting, a volunteer program for high school students ages 14 to 17 in Palo Alto and Mountain View. Another was a Halloween tree planting on October 31, 2026 at the Greenmeadow Community Center in the Greenmeadow neighborhood. Canopy also organizes group volunteering and corporate team days.

Tree care resources

Canopy's website doubles as a reference for residents. Its resources section covers planting and caring for young trees, watering guidelines during drought, sudden oak death, protecting trees from freezing nights and caring for potted fruit trees. Separate pages explain Palo Alto's tree protection ordinance, answer common questions about city street trees and summarize Mountain View's tree rules. A section on neighbor tree issues helps when branches or roots cross a property line.

Who it suits

Canopy is most useful to south Palo Alto homeowners who want a yard tree with expert help, to families looking for a free outdoor activity and to teens who need volunteer hours. Anyone curious about street trees can join a tree walk without experience. Residents dealing with a city tree or a neighbor tree issue will find plain-language guides on Canopy's resources pages, including notes on Palo Alto's tree protection ordinance.
