Palo Alto takes its trivia seriously, which is no surprise in a town full of graduate students and engineers. The local scene is smaller than in San Francisco, though. Only a few venues run a quiz every week and the nights change as bars switch hosts or try new events. This guide sticks to what we could confirm on official pages in October 2026 and flags the rest clearly.

The short version: for a weekly bar quiz in town, go to The Pro on Tuesday or The Patio on Wednesday. For a long, free and serious quiz, go to the Bay Area Quiz Club at Mitchell Park Library on the second Sunday of the month. For more choice, look to Mountain View, Redwood City and Sunnyvale. Check the day before you set out.

The Patio: Wednesday trivia downtown

The Patio on Emerson Street is a sports bar with a big outdoor patio and 21 TVs. Its events page lists trivia every Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. and calls its trivia nights the best on the Peninsula. Entry is free, but each player has a $15 minimum spend on food or drinks. The top three finishers win Patio gift cards.

The page warns that spots are limited and the bar does not take reservations. Arrive by 6:30 p.m. to claim a table, order dinner and pick a team name before the first round. The Patio sits in the downtown bar cluster around Emerson and Ramona streets, so you can move on afterward. Our nightlife guide maps the rest of the block.

Bay Area Quiz Club at Mitchell Park Library

The Bay Area Quiz Club is a volunteer-run group that holds a long-form quiz at Mitchell Park Library on Middlefield Road. The library's listing describes it as fun trivia and friendly competition in an inclusive setting, with the aim of building a community around in-person quizzing. Sessions run from 2 to 6 p.m. in the library's Midtown Room on the second Sunday of the month. It is free and open to everyone.

Upcoming dates

  • January 10, 2027.
  • February 21, 2027, a week later than the usual pattern.
  • March 14, April 11 and May 9, 2027.

The Pro: free Tuesday trivia

The Pro at 541 Ramona Street, the sports bar that took over the old Old Pro space in January 2026, lists a free trivia night every Tuesday at 7 p.m. on its site, with walk-ins welcome. It is a short walk from The Patio, so downtown now has two weekly bar quizzes. Check before you go, since bars change trivia nights often.

Haven Wine & Cheese, Menlo Park

Just over the city line, Haven Wine & Cheese at 1925 Menalto Avenue in Menlo Park has sold seats for trivia nights through its online booking page. Its listing showed trivia starting at 6 p.m. with seating from 5 p.m., a minimum of two food or drink items per person and a $50 gift certificate for the winning team. Dates are irregular, so look for the next one on its booking page.

These weekly quizzes were published by the venues or their hosts in fall 2026. Check before you go, since nights and start times change.

Pubs just outside Palo Alto have run weekly quizzes for years. A May 2023 Mountain View Voice roundup listed these. Apart from Fibbar MaGees, now listed on Tuesdays in the table above, we could not confirm current nights for any of them, so treat this as a starting point and check before you go.

The Rose & Crown lists evening hours every day, but no trivia night on its site. Freewheel says it runs weekly events at its Redwood City taproom and posts them on Instagram, but we could not confirm that its 2023 Wednesday trivia still runs. For more on the taprooms, see our breweries guide. Our guides to Castro Street and Redwood City cover food and drink in each downtown.

How pub trivia usually works

Most bar quizzes follow a familiar format. A host reads questions over a microphone in rounds of general knowledge, with themed rounds on music, movies or pictures mixed in. Teams write answers on a sheet that the host collects after each round. Many quizzes end with a final question where teams wager points. Prizes are usually gift cards or bar tabs.

Some bars write their own questions. Others hire trivia companies such as King Trivia or Brainstormer, which run nights at many venues and post schedules on their own sites. A long club quiz like the Bay Area Quiz Club's is a different animal: more questions, harder material and a more competitive crowd.

Which quiz suits you

The bar quizzes and the club quiz feel very different. The Patio and The Pro are social nights out. At The Patio that means two hours, a drink or dinner, a loud room and a prize for the top three. It suits coworkers, friends after work and anyone who wants a casual game. Teams change from week to week and nobody minds a wrong answer.

The Bay Area Quiz Club is closer to a sport. Four hours on a Sunday afternoon is a commitment and the questions run deeper. It suits people who enjoy quiz shows, competitive quizzing or simply learning something new in a quiet room. It is also the better choice for anyone who does not drink or who wants to bring a teenager, since it meets in a public library rather than a bar.

If you are new to town, either one is a good way to meet people. If you arrive alone, ask the host whether a team needs another player. See our clubs and meetups guide for more ways to find your people.

Tips for a good night

  1. Build a mixed team. One sports fan, one pop culture fan and one person who reads the news cover most rounds.
  2. Put phones away. Looking up answers gets teams disqualified at almost every quiz.
  3. Arrive early. Tables fill before the first question, especially on a Wednesday at The Patio.
  4. Order before it starts. Kitchens get slammed between rounds.
  5. Thank the host. A good quiz takes hours to write. A tip or a kind word is appreciated.

Other games nights

If trivia is not quite your thing, the library holds free Saturday board game days at the Downtown Library and Gamelandia on California Avenue runs game nights. See our board games and chess guide. For drinks before a quiz, our happy hours guide lists early-evening deals downtown.

Good to know

  • Trivia nights change more than almost any other bar event. Check a venue's site or social media on the day.
  • Bars set their own age rules for trivia nights. The library quiz is open to everyone.
  • In town for a conference and want a low-key evening? Compare hotels near downtown and walk to The Patio.
