Palo Alto has no shortage of people who like a good strategy game, from adults with a weekly game night to children working through their first chess lessons. You will not find a big board game cafe here, but the city has something close: a game store on California Avenue that lends out hundreds of games to play at its tables. Around it are weekly drop-in chess sessions, free library game days and teen programs that include tabletop play.

This guide covers the places and programs we confirmed in October 2026. Event dates and club schedules change, so follow the links to each organizer before you go. For more indoor ideas, see our rainy day guide.

Gamelandia: the city's game table

Gamelandia at 290 California Avenue, Suite A, calls itself an inclusive tabletop game store and community hub. It is two things at once: a shop and a place to play. The open play library holds more than 600 games. You can book a table online, pick a game from the shelves and settle in. Staff will suggest a game if you are stuck.

What happens there

  • Board game nights for adults, plus open play whenever tables are free.
  • Trading card games. Weekly nights and tournaments for Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, Lorcana, One Piece and others. In October 2026 the store advertised a Casual Commander night on Saturday evenings for ages 13 and up.
  • Role-playing games. Dungeons and Dragons campaigns for adults and a Kids D&D program.
  • Learn to play sessions for Pokemon and Magic, plus a Pokemon Jr. League for children.

The store says it won TCGplayer's 2024 Hobby Store of the Year award. Its play rooms are painted with murals by local and nationally known artists. It stays open into the evening on most days, which makes it one of the later stops on California Avenue. The California Avenue Caltrain station is a short walk away.

Parties and private rooms

Gamelandia rents two private rooms. The Space Room seats 20 and the Big Room seats 32. Renters get the full game library. Staff help pick games but do not teach them. You can bring food but not alcohol, since the store has no liquor license. For more party ideas, see our birthday party guide.

Chess: drop-in clubs

The most regular public chess in town comes from Bay Area Chess, a South Bay chess organization that runs drop-in clubs in several cities. Its Palo Alto sessions meet in the Fireside Room of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto at 505 East Charleston Road.

SessionTimeStatus in fall 2026
Saturday drop-in club2:30 to 4:30 p.m.Running weekly
Thursday drop-in club6 to 7:30 p.m.Paused for winter, returning February 25, 2027

Each session follows the same pattern. The first part is free play while coaches check in players and size up new arrivals. Then comes a lesson or demonstration pitched at the skill levels in the room, sometimes split into groups. The last part is organized paired play, puzzles or a practice tournament based on the lesson. Bay Area Chess describes the sessions as classes for all levels. The coached format is built mostly around students, so adults who want rated games may prefer tournaments.

You can register online to reserve a seat or pay at the door, which the organizer says is preferred and cheaper. A bundle of ten Palo Alto sessions is sold at the price of eight and lasts a year. For the Thursday session, the organizer asks players to arrive between 5:55 and 6:05 p.m. and to park in the back lot.

Chess at home and online

Many local players also play online between sessions. If you want face-to-face games at a higher level, ask the Bay Area Chess coaches about rated tournaments in the South Bay.

Library game days

The Palo Alto City Library lists game events on its events calendar under Games and Gaming. In fall 2026 the calendar showed:

  • Saturday Board Games Day at the Downtown Library on November 7 and December 5, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., for adults and teens 14 to 18. It is a drop-in day of modern board games. Bring your own games, snacks and drinks or join someone else's table.
  • Bay Area Quiz Club at the Mitchell Park Library, a volunteer-run trivia afternoon. The November 8 session was canceled. The next one listed is December 13, 2 to 6 p.m.
  • LEGO Fridays and LEGO Tuesdays for young children at College Terrace and Downtown, 4 to 5 p.m. Builders leave the bricks behind and take a photo of their work.

Teens can also look for Game On! sessions from the library's teen programs. Library programs are generally free, although some ask you to register. Our libraries guide covers every branch and our library card guide explains how to sign up.

Games for teens

The Mitchell Park Teen Center, known as The Drop, inside the Mitchell Park Library and Community Center, has board games alongside pool, foosball, ping pong and video games for middle and high school students. Gamelandia's trading card nights for ages 13 and up are another draw. Our teens guide has hours and membership details.

Chess for kids

Families looking for more structured chess have several options. Beyond the weekend drop-in club, Bay Area Chess lists after-school chess, lunchtime chess, online classes and chess camps on its website. It is also worth asking your child's school whether it hosts an after-school chess class. Gamelandia's kids programs, from Kids D&D to its Pokemon league, suit children who prefer cards and dice to a chessboard.

A few habits help a young player improve:

  • Play a mix of slower games and puzzles rather than only fast online games.
  • Write down moves in longer games so a coach can review them.
  • Try a practice tournament at a drop-in session before a rated event.

Tips for game players

  1. Book a table ahead. Weekend evenings can be busy at Gamelandia. A booking saves a wait.
  2. Try before you buy. Play a game from the library before buying a copy as a gift.
  3. Bring a newcomer. Learn to play sessions and drop-in chess are built for beginners.
  4. Check the calendar. Card game nights and library events change month to month.
  5. Shop local for gifts. Our kids and toys guide lists other stores with games and puzzles.

  • The Thursday chess session is closed from November to February because of early darkness.
  • Library game days let you bring outside food and drinks. Gamelandia sells drinks and snacks.
