Birthday parties in Palo Alto tend to fall into two camps. Many families keep it simple with a picnic table in a city park, a cake and a playground next door. Others book a venue that does the entertaining, such as the Junior Museum and Zoo or a museum party room. Both approaches fill weekends quickly, so the most useful planning tip is to start early.
This guide covers the venues and options we could confirm in October 2026, with how each booking system works. Where a venue publishes prices, we give them as listed and note the date, but prices change, so confirm when you book. For bakeries that make birthday cakes, see our bakeries and desserts guide.

Booking and prices
Create an Enjoy! online account first. The JMZ takes requests 30 to 90 days ahead, first come, first served. An invoice arrives within 72 hours of approval and payment is due within 72 hours of the invoice, or the date is released. In October 2026 the city listed Science Lab 1 at $830 for residents and $893 for nonresidents and Science Lab 2 at $942 for residents. Extra guests were listed at $16 each up to room capacity and themes at $214 for residents. These are the published figures at the time we checked. See the JMZ birthday page for current details. Park picnic reservations
A reserved picnic area is the classic Palo Alto birthday. The city takes group reservations at three places: Mitchell Park, Rinconada Park and the Oak Grove group site at Foothills Nature Preserve. Every other picnic table in the city is first come, first served.
- Who can book: At Rinconada and Mitchell, Palo Alto residents, organizations and companies. The Foothills group application is for residents only.
- When: Up to six months ahead and no less than 10 business days before the date. Rinconada and Mitchell may accept shorter notice if space allows, but those picnics get no refunds and no alcohol.
- How: Check availability on the city's CivicRec group picnic calendar, then submit the application.
- Before the day: Pick up a packet with a reserved sign, a permit copy and waste sorting kits on the Thursday or Friday before. Post the sign at your site that morning.
The city's page does not list base fees, capacities or rules on bounce houses, so ask Community Services before you plan around them. Card payments carry a non-refundable 2.75% service fee since August 2026. Details are on the city's picnic reservations page.
Choosing a park
Rinconada Park has shade from its redwood grove, a playground with a tot lot and restrooms, all next to the JMZ. Mitchell Park has the Magical Bridge Playground and water play. Foothills feels like a day in the country but charges a vehicle fee and can close when full. Our picnic spots guide compares them.

Community center rooms
The city also rents rooms at its community centers for celebrations. Cubberley Community Center rents space by the hour and lists social events among its uses. The Mitchell Park Community Center, Lucie Stern Community Center and the new Bryant Street Community Center downtown are also on the rental list. The city's page does not mention birthday parties by name, so confirm with the rentals office that your plans fit before you book.
Hidden Villa
For a farm setting, Hidden Villa in Los Altos Hills rents two covered picnic sites on weekends. The Morgan Family Pavilion seats up to 60 and sits close to parking and restrooms. The Garden Picnic Site seats up to 40 and has a large open play space. Any group of 15 or more must book a site and the rental covers eight vehicles. Hidden Villa also lists a birthday party package, with a form to register interest.
The rules are strict, by design. There are no trash cans, so you pack out all garbage. There is no electricity or refrigerator. Balloons, streamers, confetti, glitter, piñatas, bounce houses and barbecues are not allowed. Rain does not earn a refund. See our nature programs guide for the farm's other activities.
Museum and science parties nearby
Hiller Aviation Museum, San Carlos
The Hiller Aviation Museum at 601 Skyway Road in San Carlos offers two-hour party room packages that include museum admission for every guest over age 1, tables and stools and a scavenger hunt on request. Parents bring food and decorations. In October 2026 the museum listed Friday to Sunday packages from $499 for 25 guests and lower Monday to Thursday prices, with add-ons such as glider building led by museum educators. Book through the museum's events team.
The Tech Interactive, San Jose
The Tech Interactive in downtown San Jose hosts STEM-themed birthday parties. It does not list prices on its party page, so contact the museum for packages. Our kids museums guide covers both museums in more detail.
More ideas
- Ice skating. The Winter Lodge on Middlefield Road takes questions about parties at its office, open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

- A playground party. Small groups can simply meet at a playground. Unreserved picnic tables are first come, first served, so arrive early on weekends.
Comparing the main options
| Venue | Days | Book ahead | Entertainment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Museum and Zoo | Saturday and Sunday | 30 to 90 days | Science activities included, no outside entertainment |
| City group picnic sites | Any day the site is free | Up to 6 months, at least 10 business days | Bring your own |
| Hidden Villa picnic sites | Weekends | Ask the farm | Farm setting, strict rules on decorations |
| Hiller Aviation Museum | Every day, lower prices Monday to Thursday | Ask the museum | Museum admission plus optional educator-led activities |
For a party of toddlers, a picnic site next to a playground is often the easiest choice. For 5 to 8 year olds, a hosted party with an activity tends to hold attention better.
Good to know
- Book as early as each venue allows. The JMZ takes requests 90 days out and city picnic sites six months out.
- Most venues let you bring a cake but limit other food or entertainment. Ask before you order.
- Read the cancellation and rain policies. Outdoor sites rarely refund for weather.
