Palo Alto has plenty of places to drink a pint, but it does not have a brewery. We could not confirm a single taproom brewing beer inside city limits in 2026. For most of the 20th century the town was dry by deed and local rule, a story told in our history of Palo Alto's alcohol ban. The industrial space a brewery needs is scarce and expensive. The result is that local beer drinkers head north along the Peninsula, where Redwood City, San Carlos, Belmont and San Mateo hold a cluster of taprooms within about 15 miles.

This guide starts with what Palo Alto itself offers, then works outward through those nearby towns. Every brewery named was confirmed in late October or early November 2026 through its own website or the current listing from the San Francisco Peninsula tourism office. Hours are as posted by each business and change often, so check before you set out. You must be 21 or older to drink and every taproom checks ID.

Craft beer in Palo Alto itself

Without a brewery, the best place in town to drink local beer is the Rose & Crown at 547 Emerson Street. The English-style pub groups its rotating taps by style, with headings such as Hoppy or Ciders and Sours. Recent lists have included Russian River and Lagunitas alongside a beer sold under the Palo Alto Brewing name. Pints and pitchers are the norm. The pub opens at 2 p.m. on weekdays and 1 p.m. on weekends and stays open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

The Patio at 412 Emerson Street has a long bar and a big outdoor space for a beer in the sun. For bottles and cans to take home, Ernie's Liquors at 3870 El Camino Real stocks IPAs, lagers, stouts and more and lists hours of 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. Our bars, wine and beer guide covers the rest of the downtown scene.

Redwood City: the closest taprooms

Redwood City is about 6 miles north of downtown Palo Alto and two stops up the line on Caltrain. See our Redwood City guide for what else is in town.

Freewheel Brewing, 3736 Florence Street

Freewheel has brewed in Redwood City since 2012 and has since added taprooms in Fremont and San Rafael. It follows traditional English methods and is best known for cask-conditioned real ales, which are served cooler and less fizzy than standard draft beer. The kitchen turns out pub staples such as burgers and fish and chips. The tourism office listing also mentions wine, cider, a dog-friendly patio, live music events and a daily happy hour. The brewery's own site lists Redwood City hours of 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday through Tuesday and 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. It takes reservations online. Florence Street is not near a Caltrain station, so plan a ride.

Ghostwood Kitchen, 911 Main Street

Ghostwood calls itself a neighborhood brewpub and admits it has turned into a sports bar along the way. The brewers focus on lagers and IPAs plus seasonal beers, while the bar mixes craft cocktails such as the Mi Casa, made with a Ghostwood edition reposado tequila. Food runs to grass-fed smash burgers, chicken sandwiches and salads made in house. An arcade with pool and pinball keeps kids busy. Wednesday trivia runs from 6 to 8 p.m. The tourism office lists Ghostwood as closed on Tuesday and open from noon on other days, until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Main Street is a short walk from the Redwood City station.

San Carlos and Belmont

San Carlos has the densest cluster of taprooms on the mid-Peninsula. Our San Carlos guide covers the town's downtown.

Hapa's Brewing, 722 Laurel Street, San Carlos

Hapa's is a San Jose brewery that runs taprooms in San Carlos and Los Gatos plus a San Jose beer garden. The San Carlos taproom sits on Laurel Street, the town's main street, a few blocks from the Caltrain station. Its posted hours are 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. on Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. It is closed Monday. The tourism office notes gluten-free and non-alcoholic options on its rotating list.

Devil's Canyon Brewing, 935 Washington Street, San Carlos

Devil's Canyon is a family-owned brewery that doubles as an event venue, so the public hours are limited. The main draw is Beer Friday, listed from 4 to 10 p.m., when the taproom, barrel room and beer garden open with live music and up to seven food trucks. The tourism office adds occasional weekend hours for Beer Saturdays and Game Day Sundays. The brewery also makes a house root beer, a good option for drivers and kids. Weekday visits are for to-go pickup only.

Alpha Acid Brewing, 121 Industrial Road, Belmont

Alpha Acid releases a new beer every week. The tourism office credits it with more than 500 recipes. The taproom lists hours of 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 3 to 10 p.m. on Friday, 1 to 10 p.m. on Saturday and 1 to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Mondays bring $5 draft beers and Thursdays bring trivia at 7 p.m. Food comes from visiting vendors, so check its schedule.

San Mateo: Fieldwork at Bay Meadows

Fieldwork Brewing runs taprooms across Northern California, including one at 3030 South Delaware Street in San Mateo's Bay Meadows neighborhood. The tourism office describes a large outdoor beer garden, sampler flights, Detroit-style pizza, fire pits and a dog- and family-friendly crowd. It lists hours of noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Bay Meadows is close to the Hillsdale Caltrain station. See our San Mateo guide.

Heading south: Los Gatos

The South Bay has fewer taprooms within easy reach of Palo Alto. Hapa's Los Gatos taproom at 114 South Santa Cruz Avenue, about 15 miles away, is the most convenient. It opens at 3 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, at noon on Friday and at 11 a.m. on weekends. It closes on Mondays. Hapa's original brewery and taproom at 460 Lincoln Avenue in San Jose and its beer garden at 59 Barack Obama Boulevard are a little farther. Pair a visit with dinner from our Los Gatos guide.

How to get the most from a taproom

  1. Order a flight. Several small pours side by side are the best way to learn what a brewery does well before you commit to a pint.
  2. Ask what is fresh. Hazy IPAs taste best young. Staff will tell you which kegs were tapped this week.
  3. Check the food plan. Freewheel, Ghostwood and Fieldwork have kitchens. Devil's Canyon and Alpha Acid rely on food trucks or vendors.
  4. Bring cash for trucks. Most take cards, but a few smaller vendors prefer cash.
  5. Take beer home legally. Many taprooms sell cans or fill growlers to go. Keep sealed containers in the trunk on the drive home.
  6. Look up events. Trivia, live music and game-day crowds change the feel of a room. Our trivia nights guide covers quiz nights in the area.

Drinking responsibly and getting home

Most of these taprooms sit on or near the Caltrain line, which makes a car-free brewery trip easy. Ghostwood is near the Redwood City station, Hapa's is near the San Carlos station and Fieldwork is near Hillsdale. Late evening trains run less often than daytime ones, so look up your return train before you order the last round. Our Caltrain guide has fares and stations.

For taprooms away from the tracks, such as Freewheel, Devil's Canyon and Alpha Acid, use rideshare or a designated driver. Waymo robotaxis also serve Palo Alto. Many craft beers run 6 to 8 percent alcohol or more, well above a standard lager. A pint of a strong IPA counts as more than one drink. California's legal limit for drivers 21 and over is 0.08 percent blood alcohol. The limit is lower for younger drivers. If in doubt, leave the car.
