  7. FAQ

Nobody moves to Palo Alto for the nightlife. Most kitchens close by 9 or 10 p.m., offices empty early and downtown is quiet by midnight even on Saturday. Still, the city has a solid set of pubs, cocktail bars and wine bars, almost all within a few blocks of each other. A drink here is more likely to follow a work meeting or come before dinner than to run into the small hours.

Every bar below was confirmed through its own website, recent local coverage or both. Hours are taken from those sources and change often. Check before you go, especially on Sunday and Monday, when several places close.

Downtown: Emerson and Ramona streets

Most of Palo Alto's bars sit one block off University Avenue. The 500 block of Emerson Street and the car-free half block of Ramona Street hold the main cluster. You can walk between all of them in five minutes.

The Rose & Crown, 547 Emerson Street

An English-style pub with a long beer list and a Tudor look. In a June 2025 roundup, Metro Silicon Valley called it Palo Alto's oldest bar and listed it as open until 1 a.m. on Friday and midnight on Thursday and Saturday.

Scotty's Bar & Grill, 548 Emerson Street

A locally owned neighborhood bar across the street from the Rose & Crown, open since 2009 and known for its range of Moscow mules. Its website lists hours from late afternoon to midnight Tuesday through Thursday and until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. It is closed Sunday. The menu notes a 4 percent surcharge and an automatic 20 percent gratuity on tabs of $200 or more.

NOLA, 535 Ramona Street

A two-story New Orleans-themed restaurant and bar with a patio and a full cocktail list. Metro's 2025 guide listed the bar as open until 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday and closed Monday. NOLA is also the city's best-known spot for a boozy weekend brunch.

Coconuts Caribbean Restaurant & Bar, 642 Ramona Street

A Caribbean restaurant with a separate bar menu and cocktails made with fresh fruit and house infusions. The patio fills with groups on warm weekends.

Wine bars and wine-focused rooms

Palo Alto drinks a lot of wine, often from California. These places take it most seriously.

For a full day of tasting, the Santa Cruz Mountains wineries are a scenic drive west of town, while Napa and Sonoma are at least 90 minutes away. See our Napa and Sonoma guide or book a wine country tour so nobody has to drive.

Beer and breweries

We could not confirm a brewery with a taproom operating inside Palo Alto in 2026. For beer in town, the Rose & Crown is the beer-focused pub. For a brewery visit, head north on the Peninsula. A February 2026 beer guide from the San Francisco Peninsula tourism office lists these a short drive away:

  • Freewheel Brewing, Redwood City. English pub-style brewing with cask-conditioned ales.
  • Gourmet Haus Staudt, Redwood City. A German and European beer hall with German food. It is not a brewery, but its list is long.
  • Ghostwood Kitchen, 911 Main Street, Redwood City. A family-friendly brewpub connected to an arcade, listed in some guides as Ghostwood Beer Co.
  • Devil's Canyon Brewing, 935 Washington Street, San Carlos. A family-owned brewery that opens to the public mainly for its Beer Fridays.

Our breweries guide has hours, food and Caltrain tips for each taproom. Check its site before you go, since public hours are limited at some of them.

How late things stay open

Palo Alto runs early. Expect this pattern:

  1. Happy hour runs roughly 4 to 6 p.m. at most bars and restaurant bars. Many bars are at their busiest then.
  2. Restaurant kitchens close around 9 or 10 p.m. Restaurant bars often stay open an hour after the kitchen.
  3. Pubs and bars close around midnight on weeknights. Scotty's, the Rose & Crown and NOLA run until about 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
  4. Last call by law is before 2 a.m. California bans alcohol sales between 2 and 6 a.m.

Sunday and Monday are the slowest nights. Several bars close one of those days, so check before you plan a Sunday evening out. The Old Pro sports bar on Ramona Street closed in 2022. Its replacement, The Pro at 541 Ramona Street, opened on January 26, 2026, according to local press coverage. Reported hours run into late evening most days, but confirm before you go.

Getting home: Caltrain and rides

The easiest way to drink without driving is to come by train. Caltrain's Palo Alto station sits at the foot of University Avenue, a few minutes' walk from Emerson and Ramona streets. California Avenue station is at the end of California Avenue. Electric trains have run on the line since 2024.

  • Check the last train. Evening trains run less often than daytime service. Look up times on the Caltrain website before you go out.
  • Use rideshare. Ride-hailing apps work well downtown. Pickups are easiest on side streets.
  • Stay close. Several hotels are within walking distance of the bars. Our staying downtown guide lists them, or compare downtown hotels.

Our getting around guide covers Caltrain fares, parking garages and local transit in more detail.

Good to know

  • Bring ID. California bars check it routinely.
  • Some bars add surcharges or automatic gratuities on large tabs. Read the menu.
  • Downtown garages have time limits during the day. Check signs if you drive in early.
  • Patios are popular year-round thanks to mild evenings. Bring a layer after sunset.
