A week in Palo Alto sounds like a lot for a city of about 68,000 people. It is not, as long as you treat the town as home base rather than the whole trip. Four days are enough to see Stanford properly, eat at both farmers markets, walk Professorville and watch the sun go down over the Baylands. The other three let you ride the train to San Francisco, drive over the hills to the ocean and poke around the towns on either side of the city line.
This plan is built for a first visit and runs from Thursday to the following Wednesday. That order matters more here than in most places. The Stanford museums close on Tuesday and Wednesday, the farmers markets run only on weekends and Stanford's free shuttle runs only on weekdays. If you have three days rather than seven, our three days in Palo Alto plan packs the highlights tighter.
The week at a glance
| Day | Plan | Getting around |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday | Arrive, downtown evening | On foot |
| Friday | Stanford campus and museums | Marguerite shuttle or on foot |
| Saturday | Downtown market, Professorville, Baylands sunset | On foot and a short ride |
| Sunday | California Avenue market, Mountain View | Caltrain, then pick up a car |
| Monday | Half Moon Bay and Pescadero | Car |
| Tuesday | San Francisco | Caltrain |
| Wednesday | The Dish, Menlo Park, departure | Car, then return it |
Swap Monday and Tuesday if the coast forecast looks better on the later day. Keep San Francisco on a weekday if you can. Express trains run more often and the city's museums are calmer than on a weekend.
Thursday and Friday: arrival and Stanford
Thursday evening
Check in downtown and walk University Avenue as the lights come on. The street runs from the Caltrain station toward the creek, with most of the restaurants within four or five blocks. For a first dinner, Tamarine on University Avenue serves modern Vietnamese food family style. Evvia on Emerson Street is the long-running Greek choice with a wood grill. If you still have energy, check what the Stanford Theatre is showing. It screens classic Hollywood films in a 1925 movie palace.
Friday on campus
Friday is the best Stanford day of the week. The Marguerite shuttle runs from the transit center beside the station, both museums are open and the campus is lively without the weekday rush of a Monday. Ride up Palm Drive and start at the Oval. Our self-guided campus walk takes you through the Main Quad, past Memorial Church and out to White Plaza. Memorial Church was closed to visitors for maintenance from June 15 to October 31, 2026, so check the Memorial Church visitor page for its hours before you go inside.
Spend the late morning at the Cantor Arts Center and the Rodin Sculpture Garden, then cross Lomita Drive to the Anderson Collection. Both museums are free. Pollock's Lucifer is on loan to The Met until January 31, 2027, so the Anderson's best-known canvas is away until February. Hoover Tower's observation deck is closed until January 25, 2027, which frees an hour for the Arizona Cactus Garden or a loop of Lake Lagunita instead.

Saturday: the market, Professorville and the bay
The downtown farmers market runs on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon on Gilman Street, year-round. Go early, eat breakfast standing up and buy fruit for the week. Our farmers markets guide covers both Palo Alto markets. Afterward, walk south into Professorville. The HP Garage at 367 Addison Avenue is private property owned by HP, so look from the sidewalk. Gamble Garden on Waverley Street is free to wander in daylight.
Keep the afternoon loose. A late lunch downtown, a nap and an early start on the evening will serve you better than a packed list. Around an hour before sunset, take a rideshare or bike to the Baylands Nature Preserve at the end of Embarcadero Road. Clocks went back on November 1, 2026, so in late fall the sun sets around 5 p.m. The boardwalk and levees are free and the marsh fills with shorebirds in winter.
Sunday: California Avenue and Mountain View
Take Caltrain one stop south to California Avenue for the Sunday farmers market, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the car-free blocks near El Camino Real. ZombieRunner on the same street opens at 8 a.m. for coffee. Lunch can be pizza at TerĂșn or Pakistani and Indian plates at Zareen's.
Pick up your rental car in the early afternoon. A few agencies have Palo Alto and Mountain View branches with short weekend hours, so confirm before you book, or compare rental cars across the big agencies. Drive about 15 minutes south to the Computer History Museum on Shoreline Boulevard, open Wednesday to Sunday. Its main exhibit covers 2,000 years of computing in 19 galleries. Have dinner on Castro Street in downtown Mountain View, which has one of the longest restaurant rows on the Peninsula.
Monday: Half Moon Bay and Pescadero
Head west on Interstate 280 and Highway 92, about 40 to 50 minutes to Half Moon Bay. Walk part of the Coastside Trail along the bluffs, then drive north to Pillar Point Harbor to see the fishing boats. After lunch, follow Highway 1 south past the empty state beaches to Pescadero. Duarte's Tavern has served artichoke soup and pie on Stage Road since 1894 and closes on Tuesdays, which is one more reason to do the coast on a Monday. Arcangeli Grocery next door bakes the artichoke bread people drive down for.
Come home over Pescadero Road and Alpine Road through the redwoods, or retrace your route. Fill your tank in Half Moon Bay first, since gas is scarce farther south. Our Half Moon Bay guide covers the beaches and the rip current warnings in detail.
Tuesday: San Francisco by train
Leave the car at the hotel. An express Caltrain reaches San Francisco's Fourth and King station in about 40 minutes. It is a three-zone trip: $8.50 for an adult in October 2026, rising to $9.00 on January 1, 2027. Tap a Clipper card or a contactless bank card on the platform reader before you board and check the Caltrain timetable for the return.
From the station, walk the Embarcadero to the Ferry Building, then continue to the Exploratorium at Pier 15 or up into North Beach and Chinatown. Alcatraz closed on October 26, 2026 for dock repairs. The park service and the ferry operator expected it back by about November 18, but said that date could change, so check the National Park Service notice before you book. If you want help with the route, browse San Francisco tours that leave from the waterfront. Our San Francisco day trip guide has a full plan. Note the last express south before you sit down to dinner.

Wednesday: the Dish, Menlo Park and home
Start with a sunrise loop on the Dish, the paved trail of about 3.5 miles in the Stanford foothills. There is almost no shade, so it is best early. Then drive five minutes north into Menlo Park. Allied Arts Guild on Arbor Road is a 1929 garden compound of shops and courtyards, open Monday to Saturday and free to wander. Café Wisteria serves lunch there Tuesday to Saturday. Kepler's Books and Cafe Borrone sit side by side on El Camino Real if you want one last coffee with a book.
Return the car on the way to the airport. San Jose airport is about 15 miles from downtown and SFO about 20.
Staying a full week
Book one hotel for the whole week. Moving halfway through wastes a morning and the trip is compact enough that one base covers everything. Downtown or El Camino Real near Palm Drive works best, since you walk to dinner and to Caltrain. Weekend nights at business hotels often cost less than weeknights, which helps a Thursday to Wednesday plan.
For seven nights, a suite with a kitchen can make sense. Our long stays guide covers extended-stay hotels and furnished rentals. Remember the city's 15.5% hotel tax on stays of 30 days or less. When you are ready, compare hotels for a week in Palo Alto with free cancellation while your dates firm up.
Late 2026 and early 2027 notes
- Rain. Most of the year's rain falls from November to March. Swap the Dish and the coast for the museums on a wet day.
- Holidays. Thanksgiving is November 26, 2026. Many restaurants close and Caltrain runs a weekend schedule that day.
- Ice skating. The outdoor Winter Lodge rink on Middlefield Road is open from October 16, 2026 to April 11, 2027, with tickets sold online only.
- Holiday lights. Filoli in Woodside runs holiday lights from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027, an easy evening add-on if you have the car.
- Kids along? The Junior Museum and Zoo closes at 4:30 p.m. from November 1, 2026 and is closed Mondays.
Good to know
- The Marguerite shuttle main lines run Monday to Friday only.
- Sales tax in Palo Alto is 9.75% from October 1, 2026.
- Pack a warm layer for the coast and the bay, even when town feels like summer.
- Never leave bags in sight in a parked car, especially at trailheads and in San Francisco.
Frequently asked questions
Is a week too long to spend in Palo Alto?
Not if you use it as a base. Four days covers Stanford, downtown, the farmers markets and the foothills without rushing. The other three work best as day trips to San Francisco, the coast and the towns next door, all within about an hour.
What is the best day of the week to start a week in Palo Alto?
Thursday. The Cantor Arts Center and the Anderson Collection are open Thursday to Monday, the farmers markets fall on Saturday and Sunday and a weekday in San Francisco means faster express trains. Starting on a Tuesday would put your Stanford day on the museums' closed days.
Do I need a car for a week in Palo Alto?
Only for part of it. The first three days work on foot, by Caltrain and with the occasional rideshare. Rent a car from Sunday to Wednesday for the Computer History Museum, the coast and Woodside, then return it before you fly out.
Is Hoover Tower open in November and December 2026?
The building is open on weekdays for its galleries, but the observation deck is closed from August 14, 2026 to January 25, 2027 and the tower is closed on weekends until then. Plan the view for a later trip.
What does a week in Palo Alto cost?
Lodging is the big expense, since Palo Alto hotel rates are high on weeknights. Many of the best sights are free, including the Stanford museums, the Baylands and the Dish. Add a 15.5% city hotel tax on stays of 30 days or less and 9.75% sales tax on most purchases.
