Palo Alto starts early. Commuters catch the first trains north, cyclists ride before work and early flights from SFO and San Jose mean dawn departures. Breakfast here leans toward coffee and something quick, but there is also a century-old diner, two bagel bakeries, a French pastry shop and a handful of sit-down breakfast restaurants.

This guide sorts breakfast by when places open, using the hours each business publishes on its own site or its verified page in our business directory. Hours were checked in October 2026 and change with seasons and holidays, so look at the linked page before you set an alarm. For weekend brunch with cocktails and long tables, see our separate brunch guide.

What breakfast looks like in Palo Alto

Three styles cover most mornings. The first is the coffee bar with a pastry case, which opens earliest and suits commuters. The second is the counter breakfast: bagels, egg sandwiches and toasts ordered at a register and eaten at an outdoor table or in the car. The third is the sit-down breakfast with omelets, pancakes and refills, which opens a little later and gets busy on weekends.

Very few kitchens serve a hot breakfast before 7 a.m. If you need real food at dawn, plan on a coffee bar with warm breakfast items or bring something from the night before. Most breakfast restaurants also close early in the afternoon, which catches visitors who expect an all-day diner. The Palo Alto Creamery is the exception, with breakfast served all day.

Where to find breakfast

Breakfast clusters in four places. Town & Country Village, on El Camino Real across from Stanford, has the most choice in one parking lot: bagels, egg sandwiches, bread and coffee. California Avenue has Izzy's bagels and a few cafes; the California Avenue guide covers the street. Downtown has the Creamery, Sweet Maple and the Philz near the train station. Middlefield Road in Midtown has Palo Alto Cafe, a neighborhood spot that opens early. South El Camino Real has Hobee's and Dinah's.

Peet's Coffee

Peet's runs three coffeebars in Palo Alto. The Homer Avenue cafe downtown and the Middlefield Road cafe in south Palo Alto open at 5 a.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. on weekends. Dietary notes

  • Kosher. Izzy's Brooklyn Bagels is a kosher dairy bakery.
  • Vegetarian. Hatched marks a vegetarian menu. Bagel shops and diners have plenty of egg and cheese choices.
  • Gluten-free. Bagels and pastry are wheat-based. Egg dishes at a sit-down restaurant are the safer bet. Ask about shared griddles and fryers.
  • Dairy-free. Most cafes offer oat or other plant milks for coffee.

Timing tips

  1. Go before 9 a.m. on weekends. Lines at the bagel shops and sit-down spots build by mid-morning.
  2. Watch Monday closures. Hobee's is closed on Monday.
  3. Fuel up before a hike. Town & Country is a short drive from the Stanford Dish trailheads. Bagels pack well.
  4. Use the Saturday market. The downtown farmers market opens at 8 a.m. with breakfast stalls and pastries.
  5. Order ahead. Hatched, Peet's and Manresa Bread take online orders, which saves time on busy mornings.

If you are spending a day in San Francisco after breakfast, you can browse San Francisco food tours and check each tour's stops before you book.
