About Boichik Bagels

Boichik Bagels is a Bay Area bagel company with a shop at Town & Country Village, the shopping center on El Camino Real across from Stanford. The Palo Alto shop is in Suite 115 at 855 El Camino Real. It is one of a dozen Boichik locations, so think of it as a branch of a growing local chain rather than a one-off bakery.

The story starts with a bagel that disappeared. Boichik's founder, Emily, grew up in central New Jersey, where her family treated themselves to bagels from H&H Bagels on Manhattan's Upper West Side. After H&H closed in 2011, she spent about five years experimenting to recreate the bagel she missed. Her own words on the company site: "I didn't want to let those bagels cease to exist." She sold through cottage food pop-ups before opening the first Boichik shop on College Avenue in Berkeley in November 2019. The company's story page adds a footnote about the original: H&H closed in 2011 amid a tax fraud case. Its trademark was later bought and put back into use. Boichik's bagel came out of Emily's own years of home experiments.

The company has grown quickly since. Its location list now includes two Berkeley sites, one of them a bagel factory, plus shops in San Francisco, Larkspur, Santa Clara, Los Gatos, Concord and Palo Alto. It has also expanded to Los Angeles, with shops in Los Feliz and the Bradbury Building downtown. On its story page Emily writes that the company is planning much more to come, so the list may keep growing. The Berkeley factory location also hosts community events, such as Mahjong Mondays and Saturday bagel talks.

Bagels are the core of the menu. The company says they are made with premium organic ingredients. It also pre-slices them before they go out the door. Alongside the bagels you will find cream cheese spreads, including chive, plus fish and salads for building a classic bagel sandwich or a spread at home. The menu also lists coffee and other drinks, pastries and grab-and-go items. Boichik offers a custom bagel option as well. Exact flavors and spreads vary, so check the counter or the online menu for what is available on the day you go.

If you are buying for later, the company suggests freezing the bagels to keep them fresh. Because they arrive pre-sliced, they go straight from the freezer to the toaster.

Ordering, platters and shipping

Boichik gives you several ways to order beyond the counter. Same-day local orders run through an online ordering platform for pickup or delivery. Advance local orders let you schedule pickup or delivery ahead of time, which helps for a weekend brunch or an office breakfast. The catering and events page covers larger orders. The shop also sells party platters and gift sets. For friends outside California, Boichik ships bagels nationwide. Gift cards come in electronic and physical versions.

The website also has a grocery and cafe locator, called the Bagel Finder, that shows other stores and cafes carrying Boichik bagels. Nutrition information is posted online.

Who it suits

This is a quick breakfast or early lunch stop more than a lingering meal. It suits students and visitors heading to Stanford, families picking up a dozen for the weekend and anyone who misses East Coast bagels. The Palo Alto shop's hours, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day, run later than most Boichik branches, many of which close by early afternoon. That makes this one of the easier Boichik shops to reach after a morning on campus.

Tips for visiting

Weekend mornings are a natural rush for any bagel shop, so ordering ahead online can save time. Town & Country Village has a shared parking lot. Coffee is on the menu here. If you want boba instead, Boba Guys is in the same center. For a later meal, Howie's Artisan Pizza is also there. Our Town & Country Village guide lists the other shops and restaurants.
