New Year's Day in Palo Alto starts late and slow. Most of the town slept through midnight, since there is no city countdown or fireworks show. The morning belongs to walkers and runners on the levees and foothill trails. By late morning the brunch places that open have a line. By afternoon, the football games are on and the streets are nearly empty again.

In 2027 New Year's Day falls on Friday, January 1, so most people get a three-day weekend. It is also the day several new prices and rules take effect, from Caltrain fares to the minimum wage. This guide covers closures, transit, what changes, how to spend the morning outdoors and where to eat. For the night before, see our New Year's Eve guide.

The Children's, College Terrace and Downtown libraries close for the whole week from December 24, 2026 through January 1, 2027. The city's holiday closures page will post the 2027 list. Our holiday closures guide collects every agency's schedule in one place.

Museums set their own rules. The Computer History Museum in Mountain View lists January 1, 2027 as closed. The Cantor Arts Center is normally open on Fridays, but check its holiday schedule before you go.

Caltrain and getting around

Caltrain ran a weekend schedule on New Year's Day 2026. Its holiday service page listed only 2026 dates in the fall, so check it in December for the 2027 plan. Monthly passes have been honored for unlimited travel on New Year's Day.

Two Caltrain changes start the same day. Fares rise on January 1, 2027: a two-zone ride goes from $6.25 to $6.50 and a three-zone ride from $8.50 to $9.00. From that date, monthly pass holders must also tap their Clipper card on and off. Our Caltrain guide explains zones and Clipper.

Roads are about as empty as they get. Residential permit parking limits are not enforced on city holidays, but hydrant, red curb and sweeping rules always are.

What else changes on January 1

  • Minimum wage. Palo Alto's minimum wage rises from $18.70 to $19.25 an hour on January 1, 2027.
  • Bridge tolls. Tolls on the state-owned Bay Area bridges, including the Dumbarton and San Mateo bridges, go to $9.00 with FasTrak, $9.25 with a license plate account and $10.00 by invoice.
  • Caltrain. New fares and the tap-on, tap-off rule for monthly passes, as above.

A first walk of the year

A morning walk is the local New Year's ritual. Parks and preserves are open on the holiday.

  1. Baylands Nature Preserve. Flat levee trails and the boardwalk over the marsh, with winter shorebirds at their peak. It opens early and closes at sunset.
  2. The Stanford Dish. A paved loop of about 3.5 to 3.7 miles through the foothills. It gets crowded by late morning on holidays, so go early.
  3. Foothills Nature Preserve. Oak woodland and ridge trails in the hills above town. Cold, clear January mornings bring views across the bay.

First Day Hikes

California State Parks runs guided First Day Hikes every January 1. For 2026 it offered more than 80 hikes at over 60 state parks, with a parking fee at most of them. The release named no parks on the Peninsula, so check the interactive map on the state parks site when the 2027 list appears in December. Our hiking guide suggests routes for a self-guided start to the year.

Breakfast and brunch

Hours on New Year's Day are often shorter than usual. Some places close. Call or check listings the day before.

  • Palo Alto Creamery on Emerson Street dates to 1923 and serves breakfast all day, plus milkshakes and pies.
  • Sweet Maple on University Avenue serves American breakfast with an Asian touch, normally from 8:30 a.m. daily.
  • Izzy's Brooklyn Bagels lists holiday hours of 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Boichik Bagels at Town & Country Village normally opens at 7 a.m. every day.

Some local businesses list New Year's Day as closed, including Country Sun, Sigona's, Sushi House and The Sea by Alexander's. Piazza's lists shorter hours. If you are cooking, shop on New Year's Eve.

Starting the year's resolutions

January is when Palo Alto signs up for things. A few local ways to turn a resolution into a plan:

  • Classes. The city's Enjoy! catalog lists winter 2027 classes in art, fitness, dance and more. Registration opened on December 3, 2026 for residents and December 10 for nonresidents, so popular January sessions may already be full by New Year's Day.
  • Reading. A Palo Alto library card is free for California residents and unlocks e-books and streaming that keep working while branches are closed for the holiday.
  • Running. A free, timed parkrun 5K at the Baylands Nature Preserve replaced the old Byxbee Park event. Check parkrun's site for the start point and time, then try it on Saturday, January 2.
  • Volunteering. Habitat groups run weekend restoration days at the city's open space preserves through the winter. Sign up online, since spots fill.

Gyms and yoga studios are busiest in the first two weeks of January. If you are trying a new one, ask about a trial week before you commit to a contract.

Football and a quiet afternoon

College bowl games fill the New Year's Day television schedule. Downtown sports bars open for the big games, though some keep holiday hours, so check before you head out. For a quieter afternoon, the Stanford campus is nearly empty on the last day of its winter closure. The outdoor Rodin Sculpture Garden is open all the time and makes a peaceful walk before dark, which comes around 5 p.m. in early January.

Good to know

  • The air district has called wood-burning bans on New Year's Day in recent seasons. Check for a Spare the Air alert before lighting a fire. Our air quality guide explains how.
  • Fireworks of every kind are illegal in Palo Alto.
  • Both farmers markets run that weekend: downtown on Saturday, January 2 and California Avenue on Sunday, January 3.
  • Stanford's winter quarter starts Monday, January 4, 2027, when campus traffic returns.

The rest of the long weekend

The Winter Lodge reopens on Saturday, January 2, for one of the busiest skating weekends of the season. Buy tickets online ahead. Christmas Tree Lane goes dark after December 31, but Filoli's Holiday Lights run until January 10, 2027. Local schools return on January 4. After that the calendar turns to winter events: Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, January 18 and Lunar New Year on Saturday, February 6, 2027.

Flying home after the holiday? Airport traffic peaks on the Sunday. If you would rather not deal with parking at SFO or San Jose, prebook an airport transfer before the weekend. For the month ahead, see our January guide.
