Aloft Sunnyvale is a Marriott hotel on South Sunnyvale Avenue in downtown Sunnyvale. Its big selling point is location. The Sunnyvale Caltrain station is a short walk from the door and Murphy Avenue, the city's historic restaurant street, starts at the same platform. Marriott calls it the only hotel in downtown Sunnyvale. For a Palo Alto visitor that makes it one of the few hotels south of Mountain View where you can skip the car and still reach University Avenue in a single train ride.
This profile is based on Marriott's official page for the hotel, checked on November 3, 2026. We do not publish star ratings or reviews. Fees below are what Marriott listed on that date and they change, so confirm them before you pay. For live prices, check Aloft Sunnyvale on Booking.com or book directly with Marriott.
Location and distances
The address is 170 S. Sunnyvale Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94086. The hotel sits on the edge of the CityLine district, a mix of new apartments, shops and offices built on the old Town Center Mall site. Murphy Avenue runs one block west. Evelyn Avenue and the Caltrain tracks are just north. This is the most walkable corner of Sunnyvale, though the evenings are quieter than downtown Palo Alto or Castro Street in Mountain View.
| Destination | Straight line | By car (outside rush hour) |
|---|---|---|
| Downtown Palo Alto (University Avenue) | About 8.7 miles | 11 to 12 miles, 20 to 30 minutes |
| Stanford Main Quad | About 8.5 miles | About 12 miles, 25 to 35 minutes |
| Sunnyvale Caltrain station | Marriott says the station is steps from the hotel | |
| San Jose airport (SJC) | Marriott lists 8 miles | |
| San Francisco airport (SFO) | Marriott lists 33 miles | |
Distances by road are our estimates from the usual routes on Central Expressway or Highway 101. On weekday mornings both roads back up toward Palo Alto, so a 25-minute drive can take twice as long. Our Sunnyvale commuting guide compares the train, the bus and the car on this corridor.
Caltrain to Palo Alto and Stanford
This is the main reason to pick Aloft Sunnyvale over a hotel by the freeway. Walk to the platform, ride north and get off at Palo Alto station at the foot of University Avenue. Most trains take roughly 10 to 15 minutes, depending on how many stops they make. Sunnyvale and Palo Alto sit in the same Caltrain fare zone, so a ride costs the one-zone fare, which was $4.00 with Clipper in October 2026. Caltrain fares rise on January 1, 2027, so check the current price.
From Palo Alto station, the free Marguerite shuttle runs to the Stanford campus on weekdays. On weekends you can walk up Palm Drive to the Main Quad in about 20 to 25 minutes. Our Caltrain guide explains Clipper cards, express trains and weekend service.
The hotel does not run an airport shuttle. Marriott lists San Jose airport as the nearer of the two at 8 miles. A rideshare is the simplest way to reach it. SFO is a longer trip, but you can ride Caltrain north to Millbrae and change to BART. See our San Jose airport guide for both routes.
Rooms
Marriott does not publish a room count on the hotel's page. Its photo gallery shows a queen/queen guest room and it lists accessible rooms, including mobility-accessible rooms, hearing-accessible rooms or kits and TTY-compatible rooms. Aloft rooms are compact and bright, with a work surface, large windows and plenty of outlets. Here are the house rules Marriott listed:
- Check-in and checkout. Check-in is at 3 p.m. and checkout at noon.
- Minimum age. Marriott lists 16 as the minimum check-in age, which is lower than at many hotels.
- Housekeeping. Listed as daily.
- Wi-Fi. Complimentary in-room Wi-Fi, with Marriott Bonvoy members getting free internet when they book direct.
- Smoking. The property is smoke-free.
Parking, EV charging, pets and fitness
- Parking. Complimentary on-site self parking, according to Marriott in November 2026. That is unusual for a hotel next to a Caltrain station and it can save a lot over a week.
- EV charging. None. The hotel's FAQ says it has no electric vehicle charging stations. Our EV charging guide lists public chargers in Palo Alto.
- Pets. Up to two pets per room, each up to 40 pounds. Marriott listed a nonrefundable fee of $50 a night with a maximum of $150 per stay.
- Fitness. The Re:charge gym is free for guests.
- Pool. Marriott's page does not list one.
- Shuttle. None.
Check the official Marriott page before you travel. Pet fees and parking terms are the details most likely to change.
Dining on site
There is no full-service restaurant. Re:fuel by Aloft serves breakfast daily from 6:30 to 10 a.m. and runs a grab-and-go pantry with snacks and drinks around the clock. Marriott's FAQ says breakfast is not free, so treat it as a paid extra unless your rate includes it. The W XYZ Bar is the lobby bar. Marriott lists live music, popcorn and games on Wednesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. but does not post regular bar hours.
Food nearby
With Murphy Avenue a block away, you do not need the hotel for dinner. The 100 block of South Murphy has been a pedestrian street since 2023, with tables in the old roadway on warm nights. These places were confirmed open in our Sunnyvale food guide on November 1, 2026:
- Mayan Kitchen at 139 S. Murphy Avenue, Yucatán and Mayan cooking.
- Metro City at 151 S. Murphy Avenue, all-day breakfast and American plates.
- Fibbar MaGees at 156 S. Murphy Avenue, an Irish pub.
- Ramen Seas at 173 Murphy Avenue, ramen with seafood broths.
- Meyhouse at 187 S. Murphy Avenue, Turkish meze and grill.
- Bean Scene Cafe at 186 S. Murphy Avenue for coffee, crepes and paninis.
Moods Wine Bar and Bistro, which moved from Palo Alto, is now at 111 W. Evelyn Avenue, a short walk across the tracks. Several Murphy Avenue restaurants close between lunch and dinner, so check hours for a midafternoon meal.
Who Aloft Sunnyvale suits
- Car-free visitors who want to reach Palo Alto, Mountain View and San Jose by train.
- Business travelers with meetings in Sunnyvale or Santa Clara who also need a day at Stanford.
- Drivers on a budget, since free parking offsets part of the room rate.
- Owners of small dogs up to 40 pounds.
- Younger travelers, since Marriott lists a minimum check-in age of 16.
It is a weaker fit if you want a pool, EV charging or a resort feel. The Treehouse Hotel in north Sunnyvale has a heated pool and a beer garden but no train next door. If you would rather stay inside Palo Alto, our downtown hotel guide covers the options a short walk from University Avenue.
Booking tips
- Compare total cost. Free parking makes this hotel cheaper in practice than many Palo Alto hotels with similar room rates. Add parking fees to any rival quote.
- Watch the pet math. At $50 a night, the pet fee caps at $150 after three nights, so longer stays with a dog cost less per night.
- Mind the calendar. Stanford commencement, big conferences in Santa Clara and stadium events push rates up across the South Bay.
- Ask for a quiet room. Trains pass close by, including early morning service. Ask for a room on the side away from the tracks if you sleep lightly.
- Shop around. You can compare Sunnyvale hotels on Hotels.com to see how Aloft prices against nearby Marriott and independent hotels on your dates.
