Downtown Sunnyvale's dining scene fits on one block. Historic Murphy Avenue runs south from the Caltrain station past low brick and stucco storefronts. Nearly every door opens onto a restaurant, cafe or bar. Since 2023 the block has been a pedestrian mall. On a warm evening tables fill the old roadway and the street feels like a plaza.
This guide draws on a February 2026 Almanac guide to downtown Sunnyvale, updated in April 2026, plus restaurant and chain websites we checked in late October 2026. Descriptions stay factual: what each place serves, where it is and the hours that were published. Hours change, so treat them as a starting point. For the rest of the city, from the Heritage Park Museum to the bayfront, see our Sunnyvale town guide.
How Murphy Avenue is laid out
Step off the train at the Sunnyvale station and walk south. The historic Del Monte building, a reminder of the cannery era, sits at the head of the block at 100 S. Murphy Ave. Restaurants line both sides from there to Washington Avenue. West Evelyn Avenue, which runs along the tracks, adds a few more places. The large Cityline development to the south and west is still adding shops and housing, so expect construction fences around the edges.
Sunnyvale's other big food corridor is El Camino Real, a long strip of shopping centers known for Korean, Chinese, Indian and Japanese restaurants. It needs a car and is not covered in detail here.

Dinner on the block
Dishdash
Dishdash at 190 S. Murphy Ave. has served Middle Eastern food downtown since 2001. Owner Emad Ibrahim later opened several fast-casual Dish N Dash counters around the South Bay. The Almanac named mansaf, kebab combinations and m'shakaleh, a baked dish of mushrooms, tomatoes, smoked eggplant and cauliflower, among the popular plates. The restaurant takes reservations on its website and posts separate lunch and dinner menus.
Meyhouse
Meyhouse at 187 S. Murphy Ave. takes its name from the Turkish meyhane, a tavern built around food, drink and music. The Almanac described a dozen small plates meant for sharing, hot meze such as borek and mesquite-grilled meats, plus a $95 chef's tasting menu. It listed lunch Tuesday to Sunday and dinner most nights. Our Turkish food guide covers similar cooking in Palo Alto.
Mayan Kitchen
Mayan Kitchen at 139 S. Murphy Ave. opened in 2022 and cooks dishes from the Yucatán, including cochinita pibil, slow-cooked pork. The menu also leans on plant-based options such as a vegetable empanada and a pumpkin seed dip called sikil p'ak. The Almanac listed lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday.
Gumba's Italian
Gumba's Italian at 176 S. Murphy Ave. has served pasta, pizza and seafood on red checkered tablecloths since 1988, which makes it the longest-running restaurant on this list. It hosts comedy nights and wine pairings and opens early on weekends. A family dinner here is about as classic as Murphy Avenue gets.
Moods. Wine Bar & Bistro
Palo Alto readers may remember Moods from its old location. The Almanac reported that it relocated to 111 W. Evelyn Ave., just around the corner from Murphy Avenue. It serves Afghan dishes and sorts its wines by dark or light "moods," with four-pour flights. Live music, often jazz, is posted on its social media. Our bars and wine guide covers Palo Alto's own wine bars.
Casual lunches and pub food
Ramen Seas at 173 Murphy Ave. has been the block's ramen shop for more than a decade, with seafood broths and rotating specials such as clam ramen. It closes between lunch and dinner on weekdays. See our ramen guide for Palo Alto bowls.
Thai Basil at 101 S. Murphy Ave. is a corner restaurant with a long menu of curries, noodles and vegetarian dishes, including a northeastern Thai sausage appetizer. The Almanac listed Monday to Saturday hours with a break in the afternoon. Our Thai food guide has more.
The Oxford Kitchen and Gastropub at 195 S. Murphy Ave. mixes London pub dishes such as bangers and mash with Middle Eastern, Southeast Asian and Indian flavors. Fibbar MaGees at 156 S. Murphy Ave. is an Irish pub that marked 30 years in Sunnyvale in 2024, serving fish and chips and shepherd's pie. It hosts trivia on Tuesday nights and stays open the latest on the block.
Breakfast, coffee and dessert
Metro City at 151 S. Murphy Ave. serves breakfast all day, with ten kinds of eggs Benedict, plus American comfort food and a bar. The Almanac listed daily hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is the easiest choice for a weekend brunch with a group. Our breakfast guide covers mornings in Palo Alto.
Bean Scene Cafe at 186 S. Murphy Ave. is locally owned and serves espresso, breakfast plates, paninis and crepes. Coffee & More sits inside the Del Monte building at 100 S. Murphy Ave., with nitro cold brew, breakfast burritos and sandwiches. A short walk away, Philz Coffee lists a Sunnyvale store at 125 S. Frances St.
For something sweet, Alma Dessert at 165 S. Murphy Ave. specializes in boba and six kinds of tiramisu, with tiramisu-inspired drinks. The Almanac listed it as open daily from noon to 9 p.m.
Saturday farmers market
Every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Sunnyvale farmers market sets up at Murphy and Washington avenues, year-round, rain or shine. It adds produce, bread and prepared food to the block and makes a good reason to come early and stay for lunch. Our farmers markets guide covers Palo Alto's markets.
Planning your visit
- Go by train. Sunnyvale is in the same Caltrain fare zone as Palo Alto and the station sits at the top of Murphy Avenue.
- Parking: Downtown has public garages and lots near the station and Cityline. You cannot drive onto the pedestrian block.
- Lunch gaps: Several restaurants close between lunch and dinner, so a 3 p.m. meal can be hard to find.
- Stay nearby: Sunnyvale has more hotel rooms than Palo Alto, often at lower prices. You can compare Sunnyvale hotels for a longer stay.
Changes to watch
Downtown Sunnyvale is in flux. The Almanac updated its guide to note that the Tipsy Putt mini-golf bar had permanently closed its Sunnyvale location. It also reported that Zareen's, the Pakistani and Indian restaurant that started in Palo Alto, planned a downtown Sunnyvale location. We could not confirm an opening date, so check Zareen's own website before going. As Cityline fills in, expect more openings around the edges of the old block.
