About The Market at Edgewood

The Market at Edgewood is an independent, family-owned grocery store at 2170 West Bayshore Road, in Edgewood Plaza near Embarcadero Road and US 101. It is the neighborhood market for the Eichler tracts of northeast Palo Alto and describes itself as a community-oriented food market for Palo Alto and the surrounding Bay Area.

The family behind it tells its story on the website. They arrived in the United States in 1990 as refugees from Bulgaria, looking for a new start. The father, Mustafa, worked three jobs to save money and put his children through college, hoping they would one day run a family business. In 2009 the family opened Crystal Springs Produce, a small neighborhood produce shop in the San Mateo hills. It became known for produce, international goods and personal service. The family then expanded to Edgewood Plaza in late 2017.

Edgewood Plaza has its own long story. It is the only shopping center Joseph Eichler built. Its grocery space sat empty for years before this market opened. Our Midtown and Edgewood shopping guide tells that history.

What you will find

The market lists these departments:

  • Fresh produce
  • Butcher counter with fresh meats
  • Cheese, including specialty cheeses from around the world
  • Bakery
  • Deli and catering
  • Groceries and imported goods
  • Wine, beer and spirits

Produce gets the most attention. The family says produce is hand-selected every day and that the father still does the buying himself for both stores. The market also makes prepared meals and favors local, organic and homemade products whenever it can. Stock changes with the seasons.

Catering and holiday meals

Catering is a big part of the business. The menu covers artisan platters, breakfast and brunch, sandwiches and wraps, hot entrees, salads, hors d'oeuvres, a sushi menu, a Chinese menu, a kids menu and beverages including wine and beer. The bakery offers dessert platters and more than 30 custom cakes. Group packages and rental add-ons are on a separate page.

Orders can be picked up or delivered. The market asks for 24 hours' notice when possible and will build custom orders on request through its catering email. Around Thanksgiving and the winter holidays it posts complete meal menus with turkeys, sides and pies for pre-order. Check the website early in the season for deadlines.

Grocery pickup and delivery

For everyday groceries, the market runs its own personal shopping service. You send a shopping list through the order form on its website and note your substitution preferences. Staff then fill the order for curbside pickup or deliver it within a 5-mile radius. The market asks for 4 to 6 hours of lead time and says same-day service is available on most orders. A personal shopping fee and a delivery fee apply. The site notes it is moving to a new online ordering system, so the process may change.

Who it suits

The Market at Edgewood is sized for a neighborhood rather than a whole city. It suits households in northeast Palo Alto who want a full grocery run without driving downtown or to Midtown. Cooks who care about produce, a butcher counter and a good cheese case will find all three here. Hosts can lean on the catering menu and custom cakes for parties and office events. Busy families and anyone without a car can use the personal shopping service and have groceries brought to the door. Because the store opens at 6 a.m., it also works for picking up breakfast supplies before work.
