About SWEET55

SWEET55, listed in some directories as Sweet 55, is a Swiss chocolate maker with a shop at Town & Country Village in Palo Alto. Founder Ursula Schnyder, who calls herself the company's Chief Chocolate Officer, grew up in Switzerland. She writes that her mother would hand her a small piece of fine Swiss chocolate every day after school. She started SWEET55 to recreate that simple pleasure after moving to the United States.

The chocolates are made in small batches in Half Moon Bay, on the coast, where the company also runs a second store. SWEET55 says it works only with sustainable Swiss grand cru chocolate and uses no preservatives. The logo shows the Eiger, the Swiss peak near where the founder grew up. The Eiger is also the name of the company's flagship product.

The website lists several honors: Good Food Awards wins in 2018 and 2019 and a sofi Award in 2021. The company is a member of the Fine Chocolate Industry Association and the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce.

On sourcing, SWEET55 says it buys from Swiss suppliers that pay cacao growers above-average prices. Its Swiss-trained chocolatiers turn that chocolate into a range of confections that changes over time. The company also writes a newsletter on Substack called The Sweet Spot for news on new flavors and seasonal collections.

What you can buy

The shop sells chocolates individually and in boxed assortments. Lines listed on the website include:

  • Swiss Class: the core assortment, sold in several box sizes, with a larger Swiss Class Extra box.
  • Dark Matter: an assortment focused on dark chocolate.
  • Chocolate lollipops: sold singly and in sets, with holiday designs in season.
  • Holiday collection: favor boxes with two chocolates, assortments from 5 to 30 pieces, nut-free sets and a 2026 advent calendar.
  • Message in a Box: a gift box of 14 chocolates.

The selection changes with the seasons. The holiday 2026 collection was already posted when we checked in late October.

Gifts, shipping and catering

SWEET55 ships within the continental United States. Its FAQ explains that shipments go by USPS, that a packaging fee covers insulated materials and that foil pouches and ice packs are added in hot weather. The company recommends eating the chocolates within 14 days of arrival.

For businesses, the corporate gifts program offers branded chocolates and custom boxes, with a discount that grows with the size of the order. The company says it has made gifts for Bay Area clients including Google and Stanford. It also caters dessert buffets for weddings, baby showers, birthdays and holiday parties. The website also links to ordering through ezCater.

The Half Moon Bay shop

SWEET55's second store is at 225 Cabrillo Highway South in Half Moon Bay, close to where the chocolates are made. Its posted hours are much shorter than the Palo Alto shop's, with openings on Friday and Saturday only, so check the locations page before you drive over the hill. For most Palo Alto shoppers, the Town & Country store is the easier stop.

Allergy notes

All products are made on shared machinery and may contain traces of soy, dairy, eggs and nuts, according to the FAQ. Some holiday sets are labeled nut-free, but anyone with a serious allergy should read the ingredient label on each product and ask in the store.
