Residence Inn by Marriott San Francisco Airport/San Mateo is an extended stay hotel on Winward Way in east San Mateo, near Highway 92 and the Foster City line. Every room is a suite with a kitchen and a separate living area. The rate includes a hot breakfast. Parking is inexpensive by Bay Area standards and the pet policy is generous. Despite the airport in the name, the hotel sits about halfway between SFO and Palo Alto. That makes it a practical base for long visits that mix Stanford, San Francisco and the Peninsula, such as a summer internship, a relocation or a family trip with lots of moving parts.

This profile is based on Marriott's official page for the hotel, checked on November 3, 2026. We do not publish star ratings or reviews. Fees are what Marriott listed that day and can change. For live rates, check Residence Inn San Mateo on Booking.com or book with Marriott.

Distances to Palo Alto, Stanford and the station are our estimates from the street location. Highway 101 is the main route south. It is heavily congested on weekday mornings and evenings, so allow 40 to 60 minutes at peak times. Our traffic guide explains when to travel.

Caltrain and the airport

Marriott lists the Hillsdale Transit Hub for buses and the Hillsdale Caltrain station as the nearest transit. Hillsdale is about 1.5 miles away, a short rideshare. From there, trains reach Palo Alto in roughly 15 to 25 minutes. Hillsdale is in zone 2 and Palo Alto in zone 3, so it is a two-zone fare: $6.25 with Clipper in October 2026, rising to $6.50 on January 1, 2027. Monthly pass holders must tap on and off from January 1, 2027. Our Caltrain guide explains passes for longer stays.

The same station works for San Francisco days. Northbound trains from Hillsdale run to the city's 4th and King terminal near Oracle Park, so you can leave the car at the hotel and avoid city parking. Our San Francisco day trip guide has ideas for a full day there.

The hotel does not run its own shuttle. Marriott lists SuperShuttle on request at $40 one way or $80 round trip to SFO. A rideshare is a similar option. For transit, ride Caltrain north to Millbrae and change to BART. See our SFO guide.

Suites

Marriott does not publish a room count or a list of suite types on the overview page. It describes all suites with separate living areas and fully equipped kitchens. Marriott lists these terms:

  • Check-in and checkout. 3 p.m. and noon.
  • Minimum age. 21 to check in, older than at most hotels.
  • Housekeeping. Every other day.
  • Laundry. Guest laundry plus valet and same-day dry cleaning.
  • Mobile key. Available to Bonvoy members.
  • Smoking. The property is smoke-free.

Breakfast, parking, pets and the pool

  • Parking. Self parking at about $12 a day, as listed in November 2026.

  • Pets. Dogs and cats welcome, up to two per suite and 75 pounds each, for a nonrefundable $150 per stay.
  • Pool. An outdoor pool that Marriott listed as temporarily closed for maintenance in early November 2026.
  • Fitness. A free fitness center with cardio machines and free weights.
  • Convenience store. On site for snacks and basics.

Check the official Marriott page for the pool status and current fees.

Dining on site

Breakfast is the main meal served at the hotel. Marriott lists one on-site restaurant, which is the breakfast room. Beyond that, the kitchens do the work. Grocery stores in San Mateo and Foster City are a short drive away, which makes cooking practical on a long stay.

  • Amici's East Coast Pizzeria at 69 E. 3rd Avenue, New York style pizza.
  • The Ravioli House at 505 S. B Street, an Italian deli with fresh pasta to cook in your suite.

Several downtown restaurants close on Mondays or open only for dinner, so check before you go.

Who Residence Inn San Mateo suits

  • Long-stay guests such as interns, visiting researchers and people between homes. Our long stays guide compares other options.
  • Families who want a kitchen, a living area and free breakfast.
  • Pet owners with dogs or cats up to 75 pounds.
  • Travelers using SFO often during their trip.

It does not suit guests under 21, EV drivers who need a charger or anyone who wants to walk to Caltrain. For a Foster City alternative with lower pet limits but similar parking costs, see the Courtyard San Mateo Foster City.

Booking tips

  1. Ask about weekly rates. Extended stay hotels often price longer bookings lower per night.
  2. Confirm the pool. It was closed for maintenance in early November 2026.
  3. Mind the age rule. The person checking in must be 21 or older.
  4. Count the savings. Free breakfast, a kitchen and low parking costs can make this cheaper overall than a Palo Alto hotel at a similar rate.
  5. Compare against rentals. For a month or more, a furnished rental can compete. You can browse furnished stays on Vrbo to compare.
