Palo Alto has a limited number of hotel rooms and demand from Stanford, its hospital and the tech industry that rarely lets up. When a big campus weekend or a conference fills the city, the neighbors are the natural overflow. Menlo Park borders Palo Alto to the north. Mountain View borders it to the south and east. Both sit on the Caltrain line, both are a short drive away and together they add many more rooms to choose from.
This guide explains when staying next door makes sense, names hotels in each city that we confirmed are operating in 2026 and explains the Caltrain links. It is not a ranking. We do not list prices or ratings. To see everything in one search, compare hotels across Menlo Park and Mountain View and then check details on each hotel's site.
When staying next door makes sense
Crossing the city line is worth considering when:
- Palo Alto is full. Stanford commencement, which runs June 10 to 13 in 2027, mid-September move-in and home football weekends all fill local hotels.
- Your business is there. Meta's headquarters is in Menlo Park. Google's main campus and Shoreline Amphitheatre are in Mountain View.
- You want a specific style. Menlo Park has a resort on Sand Hill Road. Mountain View has more big, modern business hotels.
- You need value. Mountain View's larger supply often means more choice at lower prices, especially on weekends.
- You want a kitchen. Extended-stay hotels are easier to find in Mountain View.
It makes less sense if your trip centers on walking around downtown Palo Alto every evening. In that case, a slightly pricier room downtown may be worth more than the savings. Our downtown guide covers that option.
The Caltrain connection
Caltrain ties these three cities together. Heading south from Menlo Park, the stations near Palo Alto run in this order:
| Station | City | What is nearby |
|---|---|---|
| Menlo Park | Menlo Park | Downtown Menlo Park, Santa Cruz Avenue |
| Palo Alto | Palo Alto | University Avenue, Stanford shuttles, VTA buses |
| California Avenue | Palo Alto | California Avenue shops and restaurants |
| San Antonio | Mountain View | San Antonio Road shopping, the Palo Alto line |
| Mountain View | Mountain View | Castro Street downtown, VTA light rail |
Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Mountain View fall in the same Caltrain fare zone, so short hops are inexpensive. Not every train stops at every station, so check the Caltrain timetable before you plan around a particular stop. Electric trains have run on the line since 2024. Caltrain's Stanford station near the stadium is a special-event stop and did not open for 2026 football games.
The key to making this work is location. A hotel a few blocks from a station turns a neighboring city into an easy base. A hotel two miles from the nearest station means you will drive or use rideshare. For bus and bike options, see getting around Palo Alto.
Menlo Park
Menlo Park lies directly north of Palo Alto across San Francisquito Creek, in San Mateo County. Its downtown on Santa Cruz Avenue is small, walkable and full of restaurants and cafés. Downtown Menlo Park is roughly a mile and a half from downtown Palo Alto. The city stretches from the foothills along Sand Hill Road to the bay, where Meta's campus sits.
Confirmed hotels, from the Palo Alto line outward:
- The Stanford Park Hotel at 100 El Camino Real, just across the creek from Stanford Shopping Center. Family owned, with a courtyard pool, the Menlo Tavern restaurant and free loaner bikes.
- Park James at 1400 El Camino Real, a few blocks from the Menlo Park Caltrain station and downtown Menlo Park. Its restaurant, Oak + Violet, serves cocktails, tapas and local food on a patio.
- Rosewood Sand Hill at 2825 Sand Hill Road, a luxury resort with 121 rooms, suites and villas, the Asaya Spa and the Madera restaurant. It is about a mile west of campus and suits drivers.
- Hotel Nia at 200 Independence Drive, a 250-room Marriott Autograph Collection hotel on the bay side, close to Meta's headquarters.
Menlo Park suits Stanford families who want to be close to campus, venture capital meetings on Sand Hill Road and visits to Meta. It rarely saves money. Rates at its hotels often track or exceed Palo Alto's.

Mountain View
Mountain View borders Palo Alto to the south and east. Downtown Mountain View, on Castro Street, is about six miles from University Avenue by road. Castro Street has a long restaurant row that ends at the Mountain View Caltrain station, where VTA light rail also stops. North of Highway 101 lie Shoreline Park, Shoreline Amphitheatre, the Computer History Museum and Google's main campus.
Mountain View has many more hotels than Palo Alto. Confirmed examples:
- Residence Inn Palo Alto Mountain View at 1854 El Camino Real West. Marriott lists suites with full kitchens and a free hot breakfast, a good fit for longer stays.
- Hyatt Centric Mountain View at 409 San Antonio Road, a short walk from the San Antonio Caltrain station and the shops around San Antonio Road.
- The Ameswell Hotel at 800 Moffett Boulevard, with 255 rooms on about 10 acres and the ROGER restaurant, north of downtown and about a mile from the Mountain View station.
- Hotel Zico at 200 E. El Camino Real, part of the BW Signature Collection by Best Western. It advertises a complimentary hot breakfast.
- Hotel Strata at 93 W. El Camino Real, an independent boutique hotel with 58 rooms, breakfast and parking included. The Mountain View station is about 0.9 mile away.
- Shashi Hotel at 1625 N. Shoreline Blvd., a 200-room hotel north of Highway 101 near Google and Shoreline Amphitheatre, with a heated outdoor pool.
- Signature Inn Mountain View at 1665 W. El Camino Real, a 31-room Sonesta budget hotel that opened in April 2026.
- Holiday Inn Express Mountain View - S Palo Alto at 1561 W. El Camino Real, a 46-room IHG hotel with breakfast included.
Two more hotels sit right on the Palo Alto side of the line near Mountain View: Hotel Citrine at 750 San Antonio Road and its sister, the AC Hotel Palo Alto, on the same site. They are worth including in any Mountain View search.
Mountain View suits visitors to Google and the companies along Highway 101, concertgoers at Shoreline, families who want a kitchen and value seekers. Many El Camino Real hotels in Mountain View are not close to a station, so check the walk before you book.

Tips for booking out of town
- Map the hotel against Caltrain. A few blocks from a station is ideal.
- Add up daily costs. Count train fares, parking at your hotel and parking in Palo Alto.
- Check the last train home. Evening service is thinner than at rush hour.
- Watch for local events. Shoreline concerts and big tech events can fill Mountain View too.
- Search the whole area at once. You can compare Peninsula hotels on Expedia or check deals on Agoda across all three cities.
