On this page
Grand Bay Hotel San Francisco is a big business hotel on a lagoon in Redwood Shores, the bayside office district of Redwood City. Long-time Peninsula travelers know the building as the Sofitel San Francisco Bay. AccorHotels converted it to the Pullman San Francisco Bay, as reported in January 2017, when it had 421 rooms and suites. It now operates as Grand Bay Hotel San Francisco and is booked through Marriott Bonvoy. Marriott's page does not name a sub-brand, so think of it as an independent hotel sold through Marriott.
The name trips people up. This hotel is in Redwood City, not San Francisco, about 9 miles from SFO and about 10 miles by road from downtown Palo Alto. This profile is based on Marriott's official page, checked in early November 2026, plus a 2017 trade report on the Pullman conversion. We do not publish star ratings or reviews. For live rates, check Grand Bay Hotel on Booking.com or book with Marriott.

Getting to Palo Alto and Stanford
By car, Highway 101 south reaches Palo Alto in about 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. The Embarcadero Road and University Avenue exits lead to downtown and on toward Stanford. The southbound morning commute and the northbound evening commute are slow, so pad your timing.
By train, the closest stop is San Carlos, but it sits on the other side of Highway 101, so take a short rideshare rather than walking. Redwood City station is farther but is an express stop. From San Carlos to Palo Alto is a two-zone Caltrain fare. On weekdays, Stanford's free Marguerite shuttle runs from Palo Alto station to campus. Our Caltrain guide covers the timetable and fares.
Rooms
Marriott's room page lists only broad categories of rooms and suites, including a Grand Bay King, without sizes or a room count. It highlights lagoon views, premium bedding, fast internet and large work desks. The 2017 figure of 421 rooms and suites makes it far larger than most Palo Alto hotels, which helps when smaller hotels sell out.
- Check-in and checkout. Check-in is at 4 p.m. and checkout at 11 a.m.
- Minimum age. Guests must be 18 to check in.
- Views. Ask for a lagoon view if it matters. Marriott does not say which rooms have one.
- Accessibility. Marriott's room page was unclear about accessible rooms in November 2026. Call the hotel to confirm an accessible room before you book. The pool has an accessible entrance.
Pool, parking, EV charging and pets
- Pool. A complimentary outdoor pool.
- Fitness. A 24-hour fitness center with treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, free weights and yoga mats.
- Parking. Self parking and valet, both listed at $49 a day in early November 2026 and managed by Metropolis. That is steep for the suburbs, so build it into your budget.
- EV charging. None listed.
- Pets. Up to two pets, each up to 50 pounds. Marriott listed a $50 nonrefundable pet fee per stay plus a $50 pet cleaning fee. Our pet-friendly hotels guide compares rules.
Check the official Marriott page before you book, since fees at a rebranded hotel can change.
Dining on site
Waterside Grill and Lounge is the main restaurant and bar, with casual food, evening drinks and cocktails by the lagoon. Marriott also lists a Marketplace for grab-and-go items and in-room dining. Hours are not posted on the overview page, so check them at the front desk.
Food nearby
The best nearby restaurant street is Laurel Street in downtown San Carlos, a few minutes' drive across Highway 101. Our San Carlos food guide, updated November 1, 2026, lists Elia at 727 Laurel Street for Greek and Aegean dining, Bistro Mitte at 749 Laurel Street for German food, The Refuge at 963 Laurel Street for pastrami and The Toss at 1673 Laurel Street for weekday salads and bowls.
Downtown Redwood City, about 10 minutes south, has more choice. Our Redwood City food guide lists Angelicas at 863 Main Street, Ghostwood Beer Co. at 911 Main Street and Donato Enoteca at 1041 Middlefield Road.
Things to do nearby
Redwood Shores is built around lagoons and the bay. The hotel's lagoon path is good for a morning walk or run. Segments of the San Francisco Bay Trail follow the shoreline through Redwood Shores, so longer walks and bike rides start close by. Downtown Redwood City has the Fox Theatre, Courthouse Square and the San Mateo County History Museum. To the north, Foster City has more waterfront paths and parks. Heading south, Palo Alto and Stanford are an easy morning drive outside the peak commute.
If your trip includes San Francisco, this hotel is closer to the city than any Palo Alto hotel. Downtown San Francisco is roughly 25 miles north on Highway 101, or a Caltrain ride from San Carlos or Redwood City.
Who it suits
- Travelers flying in or out of SFO who want a quieter base than the airport hotels.
- Business travelers working in Redwood Shores or Foster City.
- Groups and conferences that need many rooms in one place.
- Dog owners with dogs up to 50 pounds.
It is a weaker fit for budget travelers who drive, because of the parking fee. Car-free visitors whose days are at Stanford will also spend a lot of time in transit. For a Redwood City hotel near Caltrain, see Kasa Niche Hotel downtown.

- Search by both names. Some booking sites still list the hotel as the Pullman San Francisco Bay.
- Budget for parking. A daily fee applies even for self parking.
- Check the address on any confirmation. The San Francisco name can confuse taxi drivers and friends.
- Compare Redwood City. You can compare Redwood City hotels on Hotels.com for your dates.
