The Peninsula and the South Bay support a solid circle of hobby stores. Palo Alto's share is small but strong. A tabletop game store on California Avenue doubles as a community hall with hundreds of games to play on site. A trading card shop at Town & Country Village handles sports cards and collectibles. For weekly comics, the nearest shops are in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, a 15 to 25 minute drive down El Camino Real or Stevens Creek Boulevard.

This guide covers Palo Alto first, then the nearby towns. We confirmed each store on its own website or on a mall's 2026 directory. Hobby stores change hours for tournaments and holidays, so check before a long drive.

Gamelandia, California Avenue

Gamelandia at 290 California Avenue, Suite A, is Palo Alto's tabletop game store. It calls itself an inclusive store and community hub. The layout shows it. Half the space is retail. The rest is tables, where visitors can pick from an open play library of more than 600 games. Tables can be booked online, which helps on weekend evenings.

The shelves cover strategy, party, family and cooperative board games. Trading card games include Magic: The Gathering, Pokemon, Lorcana, One Piece, Star Wars Unlimited and Digimon, with Magic singles and Commander decks. Role-playing players will find Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder books. Miniatures fans get Games Workshop and BattleTech, plus paints and hobby supplies. The store says it won TCGplayer's 2024 Hobby Store of the Year award.

Events run most nights. The calendar lists tournaments, weekly card game and board game nights, D&D campaigns and learn-to-play sessions. Kids' programs include Kids D&D, Kids Magic and a Pokemon Jr. League. The store stays open until 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, later than almost anything else on the street. It also rents two private rooms for parties.

A short walk away, Books Inc. sells family games, puzzles and toys alongside its books. It is a good stop for a party game or a gift for a child who is just starting to play. Our Town & Country Village guide covers the rest of the center, from cupcakes to bagels.

Collectibles downtown

Downtown Palo Alto has no hobby store, but Miniso at 281 University Avenue draws collectors for its blind boxes, plush toys and character collaborations. It is a different world from card games and comics, yet it attracts the same crowd of teenagers and young adults hunting for a particular figure. Stock changes with each new character series.

How pull lists and prereleases work

If you read monthly comics, ask a shop to start a pull list, sometimes called a subscription box. You tell the store which series you follow and it sets aside each new issue for you, so you do not miss a sold-out cover. Most shops ask you to collect regularly. Rules on discounts and deposits vary, so ask at the counter.

For card players, a prerelease is the first chance to play a new set, usually the weekend before it goes on sale. You buy a kit of sealed packs, build a deck on the spot and play several rounds. Seats are limited, so sign up early.

  1. Check the calendar. Stores post formats, start times and entry fees online.
  2. Register ahead. Popular events sell out days before.
  3. Bring sleeves and dice. Most stores sell them, but your own save time.
  4. Arrive early. Deck building takes time and rounds start on schedule.
  5. Say if you are new. Learn-to-play sessions and casual tables exist for beginners.
