An anniversary trip asks for something different from an ordinary weekend away. You want one meal you will still talk about in ten years, a few hours with nothing scheduled and at least one moment that feels like a small ceremony. Palo Alto and the hills around it can do all three in a short trip. The pace is calm, the evenings are mild most of the year and the best tables, gardens and spas sit within a 30-minute drive of each other.
This plan runs three days, Friday to Sunday. It assumes one big splurge and two easier days around it. If you only have one night, our romantic weekend plan packs the essentials into less time. Everything named here was checked on its own website in late October and early November 2026. Hours change, so confirm before you book.
Who this trip suits
The plan works best for couples marking a milestone, such as a 10th or 25th anniversary, or for anyone who met at Stanford or in the area and wants to come back. It is not a nightlife trip. Palo Alto winds down by 10 or 11 p.m. on most nights. It suits people who like good food, gardens, a little walking and a quiet room at the end of the day. Older couples will find the downtown blocks flat and easy, while the coast day adds wind, views and a longer drive.
Where to stay
The choice comes down to resort or walkable. Both work, but they shape the whole trip.
| Hotel | Style | Why for an anniversary |
|---|---|---|
| Rosewood Sand Hill, Menlo Park | Low-rise resort on 16 acres | Pool, Asaya Spa, Madera and Madera Bar on site |
| Four Seasons Silicon Valley, East Palo Alto | 10-story city resort | Terrace-top pool and a full spa |
| Nobu Hotel Palo Alto, downtown | Design hotel, 73 rooms | Ryokan Suites and the Nobu restaurant downstairs |
| el Prado, downtown | Boutique, 62 rooms and suites | A block from University Avenue, easy evening walks |
Rosewood Sand Hill is the classic anniversary choice. You can spend half a day without leaving the grounds. Four Seasons Silicon Valley lists spa hours from 9 a.m. most days and includes pool access with a treatment. For walking to dinner, the downtown hotels win. When you book, mention the occasion and ask about a quiet room or a late checkout on Sunday. Compare hotels for your dates first, since rates swing with Stanford's calendar.
Day one: arrive slowly
Arrive by mid-afternoon and check in. If you are at Rosewood, take the pool or book a spa slot at Asaya Spa. Downtown, Watercourse Way at 165 Channing Avenue is a bathhouse spa that lists couples massage with a private hot tub. Its private tub rooms must be booked by phone, so call ahead rather than relying on the online booking page.
Keep dinner relaxed on the first night. Vina Enoteca fills part of the 1880s Stanford Barn, originally built as a winery. It serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 5 p.m. Zola on Bryant Street is a French bistro with a covered, heated patio and dinner Monday to Saturday. Then walk to the Stanford Theatre on University Avenue for a classic film. A Wurlitzer organ plays around the 7:30 p.m. show. Check the theater's schedule, since programs change every week or two.
Day two: gardens and the big dinner
Spend the morning in a garden. You have two strong choices.
- Filoli in Woodside. The estate's house and formal gardens are about 20 minutes from Palo Alto. Tickets are timed and sold online. In 2026 the estate lists Holidays at Filoli from November 14 to January 10, 2027, after a ticketed preview night on November 13, with the house dressed for the season and lights in the garden. Our Filoli guide covers parking and tickets.
- Gamble Garden in Palo Alto. The free 2.5-acre garden on Waverley Street surrounds a 1902 house. It is quiet on weekday mornings. It also hosts weddings, so parts can close on weekends.
After lunch, go back to your room. An anniversary trip needs a long gap before the big dinner. Use it for a nap, the pool or a walk.
The dinner
Book this before anything else. Protégé at 250 California Avenue holds the only Michelin star inside Palo Alto in the 2026 guide. Its Dining Room serves a seven-course tasting menu, Tuesday to Saturday. Tables are released on Tock 30 days ahead, so set a reminder. Regular tables top out at four guests. Tell the restaurant about the occasion when you reserve.
If you would rather leave town, The Village Pub at 2967 Woodside Road says it has held one Michelin star every year since 2009. Its wine list runs past 3,500 labels. It lists dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Book a car or a driver so neither of you has to skip the wine. Our romantic restaurants guide has quieter options too, such as Bistro Elan on Birch Street, which lists dinner Wednesday to Saturday.

Day three: the coast or the campus
On the last morning, pick between ocean and quiet campus.
The coast. Drive over Highway 92 to Half Moon Bay, about 40 minutes away. Walk the bluff trail, have lunch in town and drive home along Highway 1 and Highway 84 if time allows. The coast is often foggy and cool in summer, while fall and winter bring clearer days between storms. See our Half Moon Bay guide. If neither of you wants to drive, you can look at small-group coast and wine tours.
The campus. Stay local. Walk the Rodin Sculpture Garden, open around the clock, then visit the Cantor Arts Center, which is free and open weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Finish at the Arizona Cactus Garden near the Stanford Mausoleum. Note that Hoover Tower's observation deck is closed until January 25, 2027.
For a late brunch before you leave, Reposado on Hamilton Avenue serves brunch on weekends from 11 a.m. La Boheme on California Avenue lists weekend breakfast and brunch from 9:30 a.m.
Small touches that make it feel like an anniversary
- Recreate a first date. If you met in the area, plan a stop where it happened. Many couples who met at Stanford walk the Main Quad or Palm Drive.
- Photos. Personal photos are fine almost everywhere. Stanford bans professional portrait shoots in the Main Quad and Memorial Court, so book a photographer elsewhere. Our photography spots guide lists good backdrops.
- A gift. Downtown and Stanford Shopping Center have several jewelers. See our jewelry and watches guide.
- Chocolate. Timothy Adams Chocolates on Bryant Street makes small-batch truffles and runs a chocolate workshop. A box makes an easy gift to bring to dinner.
What to book ahead
- The big dinner, 30 days ahead for Protégé, a week or more for The Village Pub on a weekend.
- The hotel, as soon as your dates are firm, especially in June, during football season and in December.
- Spa time, one to two weeks ahead for weekend slots. Private tub rooms at Watercourse Way are booked by phone.
- Filoli tickets, online, since tickets are timed. Its site says walk-ups are not available for its Nightfall evenings.
- A ride, for any evening with wine. Rideshare is easy downtown but slower in Woodside and the hills.
Budget tips
An anniversary is a fine time to spend, but you can steer where the money goes. Rates and menus change, so treat these as general patterns rather than quotes.
- Splurge on one thing. Pair a resort night with a casual dinner, or a downtown hotel with the tasting menu. Doing both at once doubles the bill.
- Watch the calendar. Downtown hotels are often cheaper on Friday and Saturday than midweek, when business travelers fill them. Commencement and big game weekends cost the most.
- Plan for extras. Palo Alto's hotel tax is 15.5 percent and sales tax is 9.75 percent. Valet parking at the downtown hotels adds a daily fee. Tasting menus often add wine pairings and service.
- Lean on free things. The Cantor, the Rodin garden, Gamble Garden and the Baylands at sunset cost nothing.
Good to know
- Protégé serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday only. Sunday is the hardest night for a special dinner in town.
- Daylight saving time ended November 1, 2026, so winter sunsets come before 5 p.m.
- Rain falls mostly from November to March. Keep a spa or film afternoon as a backup.
