Palo Alto's luxury hotels serve an unusual crowd. On any given night they hold founders in town to pitch investors, executives visiting tech campuses, Stanford parents splurging for graduation and couples on a weekend away. That mix has produced a small but distinct set of high-end hotels. None of them is a giant tower. Each has its own personality. The right one depends on whether you want a resort, a city hotel or something in between.
We checked each hotel below against its own website and reputable news in October 2026. We do not publish prices, star ratings or review scores. For live rates, compare luxury hotels near Stanford and then confirm details with the hotel.

Rosewood Sand Hill
Rosewood Sand Hill opened in April 2009 on 16 acres of Stanford land at the top of Sand Hill Road, close to Interstate 280. The ranch-style buildings were designed by HKS Hill Glazier Studio of Palo Alto with interiors by BAMO of San Francisco. The hotel's fact sheet lists 121 rooms, suites and villas, including residential villas with full kitchens.
The draws are space and quiet. There is an outdoor pool, a fitness room, Asaya Spa and the Madera restaurant with its wood-burning kitchen. Madera has long been known as a meeting spot for the venture capital crowd, since many firms have offices along the same road. You will want a car. Read our full Rosewood Sand Hill profile.

Nobu Hotel Palo Alto
Nobu Hotel Palo Alto is the only one of these hotels in the downtown grid. It stands on Hamilton Avenue two blocks from University Avenue, so you can walk to dozens of restaurants and the Caltrain station. The hotel opened as The Epiphany. Nobu Hospitality took over management in October 2017, a few months after the Nobu restaurant opened on the ground floor.
The hotel's FAQ lists 73 rooms over eight stories, including nine suites. The style blends Japanese and Californian design. The Ryokan Suites on the upper floors are the signature rooms. There is a 24-hour fitness center. Spa services come through a partnership with Watercourse Way, a bathhouse spa downtown. The hotel offers valet parking for a daily fee. See our Nobu Hotel Palo Alto profile.
The Clement Palo Alto
The Clement takes a different approach. It is an all-inclusive hotel with 23 one- and two-bedroom suites at 711 El Camino Real, across from the Stanford campus edge. It opened in March 2016. The hotel says breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks are included, along with beer, wine and cocktails, valet parking, Wi-Fi, twice-daily housekeeping and gratuities.
An open kitchen called The Kitchen keeps a stocked pantry around the clock. A rooftop pool with cabanas looks over El Camino Real. The suites are large by hotel standards. The hotel lists one-bedroom suites at 575 to 625 square feet. This setup suits families, guests who hate signing checks and anyone planning several days near campus. Our Clement profile has more.
Hotel Nia in Menlo Park
Hotel Nia is part of Marriott's Autograph Collection and sits at 200 Independence Drive in Menlo Park. That is on the bay side of Highway 101, not in downtown Palo Alto or near University Avenue. The hotel lists an outdoor pool, a fitness center and Porta Blu, its restaurant and bar. It is a practical upscale choice for business near the bayfront offices of Menlo Park. For Stanford or downtown Palo Alto, plan to drive or take a rideshare.
el Prado downtown
el Prado at 520 Cowper Street was the Garden Court Hotel for about 35 years before a 2021 rename and redesign. Palo Alto Online reported 62 rooms, a two-story glass solarium and around 6,000 square feet of meeting and event space after the update. The hotel appears in the Michelin Guide's hotel selection. It is a boutique option a block from University Avenue, a good fit for a walkable weekend or a small celebration.
Spas, pools and dining
If a spa day is part of the plan, Rosewood Sand Hill is the clear choice. The spa opened in 2009 as Sense, with 13 treatment rooms in a 17,000-square-foot facility that was open to hotel guests and the public. Today the hotel lists it as Asaya Spa, along with a salon, a movement studio and weekly mind-body classes. Downtown, Nobu guests are pointed to Watercourse Way, a bathhouse spa nearby.
For pools, choose Rosewood for a resort-style deck, The Clement for a rooftop setting or Hotel Nia for a pool near the bay. Nobu does not advertise one.
Dining differs too. Nobu's restaurant is a destination in its own right, with Nobu Matsuhisa's Japanese-Peruvian menu. Madera at Rosewood cooks seasonal Northern California food from a wood-fired kitchen. The hotel's site lists it for breakfast and dinner, with the Madera Bar on a terrace facing the Santa Cruz Mountains. At The Clement, meals are part of the rate, so most guests eat in. What luxury means here
Expectations matter. Palo Alto is a small city, not a resort town or a big downtown with grand hotel towers. Its top hotels are modest in size. Rosewood Sand Hill has about 120 keys on 16 acres. Nobu Hotel Palo Alto has 73 rooms, el Prado has 62 and The Clement has just 23 suites. That scale shapes the experience. Service tends to be personal, public spaces are intimate and rooms sell out fast when a big event hits town.
Luxury here also tends to be practical. Many guests are working. Fast Wi-Fi, quiet rooms, good meeting space and an easy ride to a pitch meeting matter as much as marble bathrooms. Think about how you will spend your days before you pick. A resort on Sand Hill Road is wonderful if you plan to stay on site. It is less ideal if you want to stroll to dinner on University Avenue each night.
How to choose
- Want to walk everywhere? Pick Nobu or el Prado downtown.
- Want a resort and a spa? Pick Rosewood Sand Hill and plan to drive.
- Want everything included? Pick The Clement, especially with kids or a group.
- Meetings on Sand Hill Road? Rosewood is the obvious base.
- Meetings near the bay in Menlo Park? Hotel Nia is closer.
Rates at all of these hotels swing with Stanford's calendar. Commencement weekend, which runs June 10 to 13 in 2027, is the hardest time to book. Midweek nights are busy with business travelers. You can check upscale Palo Alto hotels on Expedia to compare dates. For other parts of town, see staying downtown and staying near Stanford.
