The Computer History Museum is one of the best half-day outings near Palo Alto. It sits on North Shoreline Boulevard in Mountain View, right by Highway 101, in the North Bayshore office district that Google shares with dozens of other companies. That location is great for traffic access and less great for lunch. Most of the cafeterias around it belong to tech companies and are closed to visitors.
This guide lists the public options we confirmed on each business's own website or booking page in late October 2026, from the museum's lobby cafe outward. Turnover is high in this part of Mountain View, so check before you go. For exhibits, tickets and tips on the museum itself, see our Computer History Museum guide.
At a glance
| Place | What it is | From the museum |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Bistro | Cafe in the museum lobby | Inside |
| Cucina Venti | Italian restaurant, 1390 Pear Ave. | Across the street |
| Cafe @ Mountain View | Google's public cafe, 2000 N. Shoreline Blvd. | About 0.45 mile |
| Michaels Bar & Grill | Golf course restaurant, Shoreline Golf Links | About 1 mile north |
| Castro Street | Downtown Mountain View dining street | About 1.4 miles south |
Distances are straight-line estimates. North Bayshore is built for cars and bikes, so most visitors drive between stops.
Inside the museum: Cloud Bistro
The museum's own visitor page describes Cloud Bistro as a bistro-style cafe in its lobby. It is the simplest choice during a visit, since you do not have to leave the building or move the car. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Monday and Tuesday. The museum does not publish separate cafe hours on its hours page, so ask at the front desk when you arrive if you plan a late lunch.
Plan on two to three hours for the main Revolution exhibit and a gallery or two, which puts lunch right in the middle. A cafe break between the main Revolution exhibition and the rest of the museum works well for families.
Across the street: Cucina Venti
The museum's visitor page points to Cucina Venti, an Italian restaurant with outdoor seating across the street. Its address is 1390 Pear Avenue, Suite D. In late October 2026 it was taking reservations on OpenTable, which listed lunch and dinner on weekdays and dinner from 4 p.m. on Saturdays. No Sunday hours were listed. The restaurant also runs a catering business.
One rule matters for families. Cucina Venti's website says indoor dining is for adults only and outdoor dining is open to children 12 and older. It suits a working lunch or a dinner for two after the museum, not a day out with young children.
Google's public cafe
About half a mile north on Shoreline Boulevard, the Google Visitor Experience at the Gradient Canopy building has Google's first public cafe, Cafe @ Mountain View. It serves coffee, drinks and food to anyone who walks in. Google lists the cafe as open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Only service animals are allowed in the cafe.
Pairing the two makes a good tech day: the museum in the morning, lunch at the Google cafe, then a browse in the Google Store. Weekday lunch hours bring office workers, so mid-afternoon is calmer. Parking for the Visitor Experience is free in Shoreline Amphitheatre Lot C, but that lot closes on concert days.
Toward Shoreline Park
North of the Google building, Shoreline Boulevard ends at Shoreline at Mountain View, the city's bayfront park. Two options there:
- Michaels Bar & Grill at Shoreline Golf Links, 2940 N. Shoreline Blvd. The golf course's restaurant page lists breakfast, lunch and drinks, with hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday to Sunday. It notes that the restaurant may close for private events.
- The Shoreline Lake boathouse. The lakeside bistro is closed for remodeling. The boathouse says its espresso bar, snacks and patio seating remain open.
Both make sense if you want to add a walk by the water to a museum day.
Castro Street: the most choice
For a full meal with real choice, drive about 2 miles south to downtown Mountain View. Castro Street's car-free blocks near the train station are lined with restaurants. Places we confirmed on their own websites in late October 2026 include Oren's Hummus at 126 Castro, Blue Line Pizza at 146 Castro, Amarin Thai Cuisine at 147 Castro, Scratch at 401 Castro and two coffee shops, Red Rock Coffee and Dana Street Roasting Company. Our Mountain View food guide describes each one. Our Castro Street guide covers the street itself.
From Palo Alto you can also come by train. The Mountain View Caltrain station sits at the top of Castro Street. From there the museum is a short ride or a long walk north.
A hotel dinner nearby
The Ameswell Hotel at 800 Moffett Boulevard, beside NASA Ames Research Center, has a restaurant and a cafe open to the public. ROGER Bar & Restaurant serves California food for dinner every night and brunch on weekends. The Flyby is the casual cafe, with a coffee bar and breakfast. It is a short drive from the museum. Our Ameswell Hotel guide has the details.
Timing and traffic
- Museum days. The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday, so plan Wednesday to Sunday. Weekend afternoons are its busiest times.
- Concert nights. On show days at nearby Shoreline Amphitheatre, Shoreline Boulevard backs up for hours. Finish your visit and leave North Bayshore before late afternoon, or eat dinner on Castro Street and wait out the traffic. Our Shoreline Amphitheatre food guide covers concert nights.
- Weekday lunch. The Google cafe and Cucina Venti both get office crowds from noon to 1:30 p.m.
- Holidays. The museum closes on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
With children
For families, the museum cafe and the Google cafe are the easiest choices, since both are casual and close. Cucina Venti's age rules rule it out for younger children. Castro Street has the widest range for picky eaters, from pizza to hummus plates. The car-free blocks give children room to move between courses. Pack water and a snack for the car, because the drive between North Bayshore and downtown can slow down at rush hour.
Good to know
- Most cafeterias in North Bayshore belong to tech companies and are closed to visitors.
- Cucina Venti's indoor dining is adults only; outdoor tables allow children 12 and older.
- Shoreline Amphitheatre Lot C, the free parking for the Google Visitor Experience, closes on concert days.
- We confirmed every place on its own site or booking page in late October 2026. Hours change, so check first.
Making a tech history day of it
The museum pairs naturally with Palo Alto's own tech landmarks, such as the HP Garage and the old Xerox PARC buildings. Our tech history tour strings them together with meal stops. If you would rather have a guide, browse Silicon Valley tours that include the museum and the Google campus. Visitors staying over can compare Mountain View hotels near Castro Street and the Caltrain station.
