Outside Lands is the big one. For three days each August, a festival city of stages, food stalls, wine and beer tents and art installations goes up in the west end of Golden Gate Park. Headliners play the Lands End main stage on the Polo Field while smaller stages tuck into the meadows and groves around it. Unlike the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in October, this is a ticketed, gated event. Passes sell in tiers that climb as the summer approaches.
The festival's official site lists the next edition on August 6 to 8, 2027. On November 2, 2026, the first tier of 2027 passes had already sold out and the lineup had not been announced. This guide covers what we know, what the 2026 rules were and how to manage the trip from Palo Alto.
What Outside Lands is
The festival debuted on August 22 to 24, 2008, with Radiohead headlining the first night. The festival says it was the first act ever to perform after dark in Golden Gate Park. 2026 marked its 18th year. Over that time the lineup has ranged from Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar to Green Day and Chappell Roan.
Music is only part of it. Outside Lands is known for food and drink from Bay Area restaurants, an area the festival calls Taste of the Bay Area. There are also cocktail and beer areas, art installations and a cannabis area called Grass Lands. The festival's charity program, Outside Lands Works, says it has donated more than $1 million to local nonprofits over ten years.

Ticket types run from 3-day GA through GA+ (expedited entry and a lounge), VIP (viewing areas and lounges near the main stages) and the top-end Golden Gate Club, plus private suites and boxes for groups. The festival says presales are the only way to get the lowest price tier and that prices keep rising as each tier sells out. In 2026 3-day payment plans were available for all ticket types starting at $99 down. Buy only through the festival's own ticket page or its official channels.
Rules worth knowing
- All ages. Children under 2 do not need a wristband.
- No strollers. Strollers, wagons and carts are not allowed because of the terrain.
- No re-entry. You can enter once per day. Leaving for an emergency requires talking to a supervisor at the gate first.
- Cashless. Cards and phone payments only.
- Water. Refill stations are spread around the site. Bring a reusable bottle.
- Wristbands. Register your wristband online before you arrive. Tickets bought late in July 2026 had to be picked up in person at the box office at 25th Avenue and Fulton Street.
- Medication. Prescriptions must carry a label with a name matching your photo ID.
The 2026 entrances were the North Gate at 26th Avenue and Fulton Street, the South Gate at Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Metson Road and an ADA entrance at 36th Avenue and JFK Drive, where the Access Center offered golf cart shuttles and viewing platform wristbands.
Getting there from Palo Alto
There is no general event parking. The festival warns that neighborhood parking is reserved for residents and strictly enforced. Plan on transit, the shuttle or a bike.
Official shuttle
In 2026 the festival sold a pre-paid round-trip shuttle from Bill Graham Civic Auditorium near Civic Center to the park's South Entrance. Buses started at 11 a.m., the last one to the festival left at 8 p.m. and returns ran until an hour after the music ended. From Palo Alto, ride Caltrain to Millbrae and BART to Civic Center, then walk a few blocks to the shuttle.
BART and Muni
In 2026 BART said it would run in the Millbrae direction until about 1 a.m. on all three nights and parking at most BART stations was free on weekends. After the music, Muni ran special 5X Civic Center Express buses from Fulton Street and 30th Avenue to Civic Center BART plus extra N Judah trains. That makes the simplest late-night plan for Palo Alto fans: drive to Millbrae, ride BART in, then take the 5 Fulton or the shuttle to the park. On the way home, BART gets you back to your car at Millbrae. Our Clipper guide covers paying for BART and Muni with one card.
Caltrain
Caltrain works well for getting there. The N Judah from 4th and King runs along the south side of the park. Getting home is harder. Check the weekend timetable for the last southbound train before you go and allow at least an hour from the park to 4th and King on a festival night.
Bikes
The festival offers free self-park bike parking on the east and south sides of the site. In 2026 Lyft bike share also set up valet docks near the north and south gates.
Good to know
- August in the west end of the park is often foggy and cold by evening. Bring a warm layer even after a hot day in Palo Alto.
- Wear shoes for sand, dirt and grass. The site is large and uneven.
- Pick a meeting point. Phone service can be slow in big crowds.
- Lockers can be rented on site in all ticket tiers.
With kids
Outside Lands is all ages, but it is a long, loud day. Children under 2 get in without a wristband. Everyone else needs a full ticket. With no strollers allowed, bring a carrier for babies and ear protection for every child. For most families one day is plenty. Leaving before the headliner avoids the crush at 10 p.m. For a gentler outdoor concert closer to home, try the Frost Amphitheater at Stanford or Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View.
Food and drink
Most people eat inside. The festival partners with Bay Area restaurants and food trucks and says vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available. People with medical dietary needs can bring a personal amount of food with a doctor's note. Outside the gates, Beach Chalet at the ocean end of the park brews its own beer and serves lunch and dinner, a good stop before the gates open. Our Golden Gate Park guide lists more choices around the park.
Planning tips
- Sign up early. The cheapest tiers go to people on the festival's lists during presales.
- Decide on one day or three. Watch the ticket page for single-day options once the lineup is out.
- Book a room early. Hotels across San Francisco fill on festival weekend. If you want to skip the late trip home, compare San Francisco hotels as soon as your tickets are set.
- Plan the trip home first. Know your last train or BART before the headliner starts.

Frequently asked questions
When is Outside Lands 2027?
Outside Lands 2027 is Friday to Sunday, August 6 to 8, 2027, in Golden Gate Park, according to the festival's website. The 2026 festival ran August 7 to 9 with gates at 11 a.m. and music from noon to 10 p.m. The 2027 lineup had not been announced on November 2, 2026.
How much are Outside Lands tickets?
The festival had not posted 2027 prices on November 2, 2026. The first tier, 3-Day Eager Beaver passes, had already sold out. Prices rise through limited tiers, presales get the lowest prices and in 2026 payment plans were offered for 3-day passes starting at $99 down. GA+, VIP and Golden Gate Club passes cost more.
Is Outside Lands all ages?
Yes. The festival says it is an all ages event and children under 2 do not need a wristband. Strollers are not allowed because of the rough ground in the park. Bring ear protection for children and plan for long days on your feet.
Can you park at Outside Lands?
No. There is no general event parking and the streets nearby are reserved for residents and enforced, with tickets or towing possible. The festival recommends its shuttle from Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, Muni, BART, bikes or rideshare instead.
How do you get home to Palo Alto from Outside Lands?
Music ends around 10 p.m., so plan the return first. In 2026 BART ran toward Millbrae until about 1 a.m. on festival nights and Muni ran a special 5X express to Civic Center BART. A practical plan is to park at Millbrae BART, ride in and drive home from there rather than relying on a late Caltrain.
