Halloween in Palo Alto is a neighborhood night. There is no downtown parade and no city festival that takes over a park. Instead, families walk their own blocks after dark, porch lights come on along the tree-lined streets and a few museums, gardens and shopping centers add a costume event or two in the days before October 31. It is low key, safe and very much aimed at kids.

This guide covers what the city and local venues publish, the pumpkin patches within a short drive and practical tips for the night itself. We list dates only when an organizer has posted them. For the rest of the season, see our October guide and the year-round family events calendar.

Halloween dates and timing

October 31 falls on a Saturday in 2026 and on a Sunday in 2027. A weekend Halloween means more parties on the day itself and more trick-or-treaters out early, since no one has school the next morning.

Timing matters more than people expect. Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, so Halloween night 2026 is the last evening on the later clock. The sun sets around 6 p.m. and it is fully dark by about 7 p.m. Little ones usually go out at dusk. Older kids stay out until 8:30 or 9 p.m. on a weekend night. Evenings cool quickly after sunset in late October, so plan costumes that work over a warm layer.

City and museum events

The City of Palo Alto does not stage one large Halloween festival. In October 2025 it published an online Halloween community guide pointing residents to public events, informal neighborhood meetups and lower-waste ways to celebrate. Expect a similar roundup each year from the city's news page. Several city and nonprofit venues run their own events.

Junior Museum and Zoo

The Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo at 1451 Middlefield Road holds an after-hours Halloween evening most years. In 2026 its Halloween Zoo Night ran on Thursday, October 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. It was a members-only event at $30 per person, with tickets sold online and not at the door. The zoo listed free food, face painting and animal encounters and asked guests to come in costume. In earlier years the Friends of the Junior Museum and Zoo ran a Halloween fundraiser on a similar evening format. Check the zoo's events page in early October, since the format and ticketing change from year to year. From November 1, 2026 the museum closes at 4:30 p.m.

Museum of American Heritage

The Museum of American Heritage at 351 Homer Avenue scheduled a Halloween Night at the Museum for Saturday, October 31, 2026. The museum's collection of old appliances and gadgets makes a fun backdrop for a costume crowd. Confirm times on its website.

Gamble Garden

Elizabeth F. Gamble Garden on Waverley Street runs a Halloween Magic afternoon in most years, with magic, face painting, crafts and treats for young children. Older press coverage also describes a small kids' haunted house there. The garden sets its date each fall, often a week or two before Halloween, so check its calendar early.

Library storytimes

Palo Alto City Library storytimes sometimes take a seasonal theme. On October 31, 2026 the Saturday session at Mitchell Park was billed as a Halloween celebration. Costumes are usually welcome. Our storytime guide has the regular schedule.

Trick-or-treating in the neighborhoods

We looked for press coverage of named trick-or-treat streets in Palo Alto and did not find any that we could confirm. Unlike some Bay Area towns, Palo Alto has no officially promoted Halloween block or street closure. That fits the city's character. Most residential streets are flat, well lit and lined with sidewalks, so families simply go out on their own blocks and the blocks next door.

A few practical patterns hold across town:

  • Porch lights are the signal. A lit porch or a decorated front yard means candy. A dark house means skip it.
  • Older neighborhoods draw walkers. Areas with small lots and front porches see more foot traffic than streets with long driveways or gated homes.
  • Stay on public sidewalks. Many homes are close together. Walk up the front path, not across lawns or gardens.
  • Respect private traditions. Some well known homes hand out candy every year. Others do not. Treat every house as private property and keep groups small and quiet.

If you are visiting, the easiest plan is to stay with friends in a residential neighborhood or join a school or community group outing. Our neighborhoods section describes each part of town.

Halloween events nearby

Downtown districts in neighboring towns put on daytime trick-or-treat events that are easy for small children. In Los Altos, the village association's fall 2026 calendar lists a downtown Halloween trick-or-treat on Friday, October 30, from noon to 4 p.m., with kids collecting candy at stores that show an orange pumpkin sign. See our downtown Los Altos guide.

Stanford Shopping Center has hosted a Halloween afternoon in its Center Pavilion in recent years. Check the center's events page for the current date. At Stanford itself, the Halloween party at the Mausoleum in the Arboretum has been a student tradition rather than a public event. The university's most recent listing was for students only.

Halloween also marks the start of the cold-weather season in town. The Winter Lodge opened its outdoor rink on October 16, 2026, so a skate session can round out a Halloween weekend.

Pumpkin patches near Palo Alto

Webb Ranch, Portola Valley

The closest working pumpkin patch is Webb Ranch at 2718 Alpine Road, just off Interstate 280 on land the Webb family has leased from Stanford since 1922. The Stanford Daily described the 2025 season as running daily from September 26 to October 31, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pumpkins ranged from $2.75 for minis to more than $35 for the biggest. The activity zone included a corn maze, a haunted house, a bounce house and an obstacle course, with a petting zoo, reptile zoo and hayride on weekends. The Almanac reported that weekend activity passes needed a reservation in 2025, that outside food was allowed and that pets were not. For 2026, the ranch's pumpkin page lists the patch daily from September 25 to October 31, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Halloween itself the activities close at 4 p.m. The season ends that day. Our pumpkin patch guide covers Webb Ranch and the farms farther out in more detail.

Half Moon Bay farms

The bigger pumpkin scene is on the coast. Farms along Highway 92 and Highway 1 near Half Moon Bay open patches, corn mazes and hayrides every October. Local press in 2025 listed Arata's Pumpkin Farm, Farmer John's, Pastorino Farms, Lemos Farm, Andreotti Family Farms and Bob's Pumpkin Farm among them. We could not confirm that Pastorino Farms, Andreotti Family Farms or Bob's Pumpkin Farm were operating in 2026, so check before you drive over the hill. In 2025 some farms, such as Farmer John's and Bob's, charged no entry or parking fee. Others sell tickets for rides and mazes. A few, including Lemos Farm, stayed open on November weekends in 2025.

Highway 92 backs up badly on October weekends. Leave early in the morning or go on a weekday afternoon. If you would rather not drive, you can browse guided Bay Area day tours that include the coast.

The glass pumpkin patch

For a Palo Alto twist, the Great Glass Pumpkin Patch fills the lawn of the Palo Alto Art Center with thousands of handblown glass pumpkins each fall. In 2026 it ran September 26 and 27, so it comes well before Halloween. Mark it for next year.

Good to know

  • Use the 24-hour police non-emergency line, (650) 329-2413, for anything that is not an emergency. Call 911 for emergencies.
  • Carry a flashlight or glow stick and add reflective tape to dark costumes. Many residential streets have no marked crosswalks.
  • Drivers should slow down between 5 and 9 p.m. on October 31, especially on Middlefield Road, Embarcadero Road and other cross-town streets.
  • Fireworks of every kind are illegal in Palo Alto, including sparklers. Glow sticks are the safe substitute.

Tips for the night

  1. Eat early. Feed kids before they head out, so the candy is a treat rather than dinner.
  2. Set a route and a turnaround time. Two or three blocks in each direction is plenty for young children.
  3. Check candy at home. Sort it in good light and set aside anything opened or homemade from people you do not know.
  4. Bring a reusable bag. A pillowcase or tote lasts longer than plastic pails and fits the city's push for lower-waste celebrations.
  5. Mind pets. Doorbells and costumes stress some dogs. Keep them inside and away from the front door.

Our police, fire and emergency alerts guide explains how to sign up for local alerts. If you are coming from out of town for a fall weekend, you can compare Palo Alto hotels close to the neighborhood you plan to visit.

After Halloween

November 1 brings shorter evenings and the start of the holiday run. Diwali falls in early November in 2026 and the city's Festival of Lights usually follows at Mitchell Park. Thanksgiving week comes next. Our November guide picks up from here.

Frequently asked questions

What day is Halloween in 2026 and 2027?

Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, 2026 and on Sunday, October 31, 2027. Daylight saving time ends the next morning in 2026, on Sunday, November 1, so trick-or-treating on the 31st still has evening light until about 6 p.m.

Does Palo Alto hold a city Halloween event?

Not a single big one. The city publishes a Halloween community guide each October and its venues run their own events. In 2026 the Junior Museum and Zoo held a members-only Halloween Zoo Night on October 29 and the Museum of American Heritage scheduled a Halloween Night on October 31.

Where is the closest pumpkin patch to Palo Alto?

Webb Ranch at 2718 Alpine Road in Portola Valley, on Stanford land a short drive or bike ride from campus. Its pumpkin page lists the 2026 patch daily from September 25 to October 31, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Halloween the activities close at 4 p.m., so go early if you want hayrides or the haunted house.

Which Palo Alto neighborhoods are best for trick-or-treating?

We could not find press coverage that names particular Palo Alto streets as official trick-or-treat routes. Families tend to stay in their own neighborhoods, where flat streets, sidewalks and front porches make for easy walking. Look for porch lights and decorations as the signal that a house is giving out candy.

Are there Halloween events for adults at Stanford?

The Halloween party at the Stanford Mausoleum has been a student tradition and Stanford's most recent listing for it was open to students only. For grown-ups, check the Stanford Live and Stanford Theatre calendars, which sometimes program spooky films or concerts in late October.
