About Vina Enoteca
Vina Enoteca is an Italian restaurant and wine bar in the Stanford Barn, a historic building on Welch Road near Stanford Shopping Center and the Stanford medical center. It serves modern Italian food built around fresh pasta, pizza and bread, paired with a wine program focused on Italy and its regions plus house cocktails. Vina Enoteca is one of the Palo Alto restaurants listed in the MICHELIN Guide, without a star.
The restaurant ties its identity to the building. It says it is dedicated to teaching guests about the Italian culture that Leland Stanford loved, a link that makes more sense once you know the barn's history.
The Stanford Barn
According to the restaurant, the barn was built between 1886 and 1888 as a winery serving nearby vineyards. Its floors were used for cellaring, fermentation and crushing grapes. A steam engine was housed in a brick building nearby. The aged wines were sold under the Palo Alto trademark and were served at Stanford's dining tables. The restaurant also quotes Stanford speaking favorably of wine as a beverage at the family table.
Vina Enoteca occupies Suite 110 of the barn. If you like local history, our history of Stanford University explains how the Stanford lands were used before and after the university opened.

Wine club, market and travel
Vina Enoteca runs more than a dining room. It has a wine club and a private cellar program. It sells subscriptions that pair pasta provisions with wine. An online market sells products to take home. The restaurant also organizes food and wine travel experiences in Italy and team building events for companies. These are worth a look if you want to keep the connection going after a meal.
Who it suits
Vina Enoteca suits a relaxed dinner of pasta and wine, a date night or a celebration with people who enjoy Italian food. The guide listing and the historic setting make it a good choice for visitors who want a meal with a sense of place. The happy hour suits an after work glass of wine for people who work at the medical center or nearby offices. Families with children will find pizza and simple pastas on the menu. Because the restaurant serves dinner only on public days, it is not an option for a weekday lunch unless you book a private event. Diners who avoid gluten should call ahead, since the menu does not mark gluten free dishes.
