About INDO
INDO Restaurant & Lounge serves Indonesian and Southeast Asian food at 3295 El Camino Real. The restaurant describes its cooking as traditional Southeast Asian flavors blended with Western technique. It serves lunch and dinner every day, with a bar, a lounge and a patio for drinks.
The website credits the menu to three people. Executive chef and owner Thomas Charoen builds the ever-changing list of small plates and entrees. The kitchen also draws on native recipes from chef de cuisine Diana Anwar. Owner and restaurateur Bryan Lew shapes the cocktail program. INDO encourages diners to order several plates and share them in the tradition of family-style eating.
What is on the menu
The dinner menu on the restaurant's site is organized into starters, land, sea, signatures, vegetables and noodle and rice dishes. Some of the names you will see:
- Starters: roti prata, a crisp flatbread with yellow curry dip; chicken or lamb satay with peanut sauce; martabak, a stuffed roti with spiced beef; poh pia fresh spring rolls; gado gado; and Dungeness crab cakes.
- Land: papaya beef curry, Bali ribs in an Indonesian barbecue style, balado short rib and ayam rica-rica, a bone-in chicken thigh in garlic tomato chili sauce.
- Signatures: a 16-ounce black pepper ribeye, pan-seared Chilean sea bass with longan and rice wine, gulai prawns in red coconut curry, duck kapitan, laksa noodles and lamb korma.
- Rice and noodles: nasi goreng, mie goreng, bihun goreng, pad thai and garlic noodles.
House drinks include passion fruit, lemongrass mint and ginger sodas, Thai iced tea and mango lemonade. The menu notes a 20 percent service fee for parties of six or more. Dishes and prices change, so check the current menu on INDO's website.
Vegetarian choices
A vegetables and vegan section lists sambal tofu with organic tofu, green bean sambal, wok-fried Chinese eggplant and sayur lodeh, a spicy green curry of seasonal vegetables and tofu. Many starters and noodle dishes, including roti prata, poh pia, nasi goreng and pad thai, are marked as available in a vegetarian version. Ask your server how each dish is prepared if you avoid fish sauce or shrimp paste.
Happy hour and the bar
The bar serves craft cocktails and an eclectic, approachable wine list, according to the restaurant. INDO's happy hour runs Monday to Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 7 p.m. to close, in the bar and patio lounge. The happy hour menu offers small plates such as roti prata, chicken satay, pork buns, tuna tartare, garlic frites, fried tofu and martabak, along with specialty cocktails, well drinks and select wine and beer at reduced prices.
Booking, takeout and events
You can book a table through the reservation link on INDO's website. Takeout and delivery are available through the website's ordering page. Gift cards come in set amounts of $50, $75, $125 or $200, or a custom amount. For group events, INDO takes requests through an online form and answers them in the order they arrive. It offers several options for groups that want to hold a special event at the restaurant.
Who it suits
The shared-plates format makes INDO a natural fit for small groups that like to order across the menu, from satay and roti to a curry and a noodle dish. The weekday lunch service suits a business meal on El Camino Real. In the evening, the lounge and patio work for a date or drinks with friends. Larger parties should note the service fee for six or more and consider the group event form instead of a regular booking.
Tips for visiting
INDO serves lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and closes between lunch and dinner, so plan around the 2 to 5 p.m. gap. Dinner runs until 9 p.m., or 9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The patio lounge is a good choice for after-work drinks during happy hour. For more Southeast Asian and other Asian restaurants, see our Asian food guide.
