About Crepevine

Crepevine is a family-owned Bay Area restaurant group known for crepes and breakfast. Its Palo Alto branch is at 367 University Avenue, in the middle of downtown. The company lists locations in Berkeley, Burlingame, Santa Rosa, San Francisco, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Oakland and the Willow Glen area of San Jose, so many Peninsula diners know the name from more than one city. The nearest sister restaurants to Palo Alto are in Mountain View and Burlingame.

Crepevine describes itself as a welcoming spot for families, friends, professionals and students. It puts a lot of weight on its ingredients. Its coffee is organic and fair trade, its eggs are cage free and its salmon is ocean raised in Canada. The beef is described as 100 percent natural and never treated with antibiotics or hormones. The company says it buys fruit and vegetables from local farmers when it can and makes its dressings, sauces and even its pancake mix in house.

Savory crepes are the namesake. The Palo Alto menu lists more than a dozen, each served with home potatoes or fries and organic greens. Examples include the Florentine with spinach, mushrooms and glazed onions; the Greek with spinach, Kalamata olives and feta; the Kyoto with grilled organic tofu, shiitake mushrooms and peanut sauce; the Bombay with chicken or shrimp in curry sauce; and the San Francisco with fresh or smoked salmon, capers and dill Havarti. Simpler options include Le Delice, a ham and cheddar crepe.

The breakfast side of the menu has sections for egg dishes, omelettes, Benedicts, pancakes and French toast. Lunch and dinner add sandwiches, salads and pasta. Sandwiches come on a choice of nine-grain wheat, sourdough, rye or a soft roll. They range from a grilled eggplant Mediterranean to a turkey sandwich, a chicken shawarma wrap in lavash and fish tacos.

Sandwiches come with home potatoes or fries and organic greens with balsamic vinaigrette. You can swap in sweet potato fries. Other choices include a pan-seared tilapia po' boy, the Big Sur with grilled Angus bistro filet and mushrooms and the Pacific, a grilled salmon sandwich with avocado and caper aioli. The pasta section includes a fettuccine with pesto-alfredo sauce and roasted almonds.

Sweet crepes come with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. The list includes the Stanford, with strawberries, bananas, Nutella and chocolate sauce; the Jamaican, with caramelized bananas in a caramel rum sauce; a s'mores crepe; and the Apple Hill, with apple pie filling and caramel. Sides worth knowing about include sweet potato fries and a homemade spicy cornbread with jalapeño jelly.

Families and dietary needs

Crepevine has a kids' menu with mini pancakes, scrambled eggs, grilled cheese and penne pasta, which makes it an easy pick for families downtown. Vegetarians have several crepes to choose from, such as the Florentine, Greek, Milano and Kyoto. You can swap in a gluten-free crepe for a small extra charge. The restaurant is clear that it serves gluten-free items but is not a gluten-free restaurant, so cross-contamination may occur.

How to order

Besides eating in, you can order delivery from the Palo Alto location through DoorDash and Uber Eats, both linked from its location page. Call the restaurant at 650-323-3900 with questions about large groups. The menu and prices on the website are specific to this location, so check the Palo Alto page rather than another branch's menu.

Tips for visiting

Crepevine opens at 8 a.m. every day and stays open until 9 or 10 p.m. That long day makes it useful for a late breakfast after a Caltrain arrival or a casual dinner when other kitchens are full.

Downtown parking includes city garages and time-limited street spaces. The Palo Alto Caltrain station is about a 10-minute walk down University Avenue.
