About Khazana

Khazana is a contemporary Indian restaurant at 339 University Avenue in downtown Palo Alto. Its full name is Khazana by Chef Sanjeev Kapoor. The restaurant describes Kapoor as one of India's most celebrated chefs and television personalities, best known for the cooking show Khana Khazana. The Palo Alto restaurant brings his name and culinary approach to University Avenue.

Khazana describes its food as contemporary Indian cuisine with creative presentation, rooted in India's culinary traditions and reimagined for today's diners. It pairs the food with signature cocktails, classic drinks and seasonal Indian-inspired creations from a full bar. The restaurant pitches itself for dinners, celebrations, group dining and special occasions. It serves lunch as well.

The food menu is organized as small plates and large plates, each split into vegetarian and non-vegetarian sections. Many dishes put a modern spin on classic Indian ideas. A sampling from the current menu:

  • Vegetarian small plates: beetroot croquettes, shimeji mushroom pepper fry with paratha, a chana jor crumpet with Granny Smith apple chhundo, edamame panipuri with a kokum and coconut "soul curry," ancho chili paneer tikka, a jackfruit and avocado taco on millet tortillas and smoked ricotta galouti kebabs.
  • Non-vegetarian small plates: Kashmiri-style baby lamb chops with saffron and fennel, bedgi chili chicken tikka, tiger prawns Karwari with gunpowder aioli, tandoori Chilean seabass, seared bay scallops, a seekh kebab bao bun and varki chicken topped with silver leaf.
  • Large plates: eggplant bharta, dum aloo and other curries. Group menus add mango butter chicken, makhanwala paneer, fish tikka masala, Malabari prawns, laal maas and biryanis.
  • Desserts: mango kesar kulfi, a vegan badam kheer with blueberry, baked mishti doi with apricot compote and a motichoor cheesecake.

The restaurant notes that the menu is served daily, but dishes change. Check the website for the current list.

Group dining and events

Group and private dining is a major focus. Khazana offers three set menus for groups, called Ruby, Emerald and Diamond. Each lets the table choose a set number of small plates, large plates and desserts, with sides of yellow dal, peas pulao and garlic naan. Higher tiers add more choices, including lamb chops and biryani. Events carry a minimum food and beverage spend that depends on the space, the number of guests and the timing. Outside desserts are allowed for a fee.

The restaurant also runs seasonal special events. Its special events page has advertised a Mother's Day prix fixe meal with special kids pricing.

Reservations, ordering and catering

Reservations go through OpenTable from the Reserve a Table button on the website. Khazana also takes online orders for takeout. Its catering service covers intimate gatherings, corporate events, weddings and milestone celebrations, with pickup or delivery. Catering requests go through a form on the website. Gift cards are sold online. For general questions, call 650-384-6411.

Who it suits

Khazana is built for an occasion. It suits a celebration dinner, a client meal or a family gathering where the table wants to share many dishes. The set group menus make it practical for birthdays and company dinners, since the choices and the structure are settled in advance. Vegetarians are well served, with full vegetarian sections in both small and large plates. The group menus also include a vegan dessert. Spice levels vary from dish to dish, from mild, creamy chicken to the fiery bedgi chili, so ask the server to steer you if you are sensitive to heat. Diners who want a quick, inexpensive curry will probably be happier elsewhere, since the menu leans toward plated, chef-driven dishes and cocktails.
