About Gott's Roadside
Gott's Roadside started in Napa Valley. The company says its story begins in 1999, when brothers Joel and Duncan Gott took over a roadside stand along Highway 29 in Napa Valley that dated to 1949. They kept the format of a classic American roadside stand but aimed for the ingredients of a much nicer restaurant: 100 percent Angus beef, organic milkshakes, fish tacos and a California wine list.
The brand grew from there, first to San Francisco's Ferry Building and the Oxbow Public Market in Napa, then around the Bay Area and into Southern California. The Palo Alto branch sits in Town & Country Village on El Camino Real. Gott's says it has served casual meals here since 2013. The restaurant's own description puts it "kitty-corner" from Stanford Stadium, which tells you a lot about its busiest days.
What is on the menu
Burgers are the center of the menu. Gott's uses one-third pound beef patties cooked medium well, which it notes leaves them a little pink inside. Named burgers include:
- the California Burger, with fried egg, gruyere, bacon, arugula and balsamic onions
- a double cheeseburger with secret sauce
- the Kimchi Burger with gochujang mayo
- a gruyere and caramelized onion burger
- the Western Bacon Blue Ring, topped with a beer-battered onion ring and Point Reyes blue cheese
- a Texas avocado burger and a green chile cheeseburger
The menu also covers fish tacos, crispy brussels sprouts, fries and organic milkshakes, along with a California wine list. Seasonal specials rotate. In fall 2026 the specials board listed a mushroom Swiss burger, waffle fries with garlic mayo and a pumpkin shake, the last one sold in stores only. The company publishes allergen information on its menus page, which is worth checking before you order.
Swaps and dietary options
Gott's is flexible with substitutions. Any burger can be made with a veggie patty at no charge, though the company notes that patty contains dairy. For an added charge you can switch to a Diestel Ranch turkey patty or an Impossible patty, which Gott's says is vegan and gluten-free. Any burger or sandwich can come wrapped in lettuce at no charge. A gluten-free bun is available for an extra charge.
The space
The Palo Alto restaurant offers indoor dining and what it calls a spacious, sunny patio. The outdoor area includes covered and heated patio seating, with communal tables and ADA seating. Inside, there is a bar area with TVs, which the restaurant highlights for game days. That combination makes it a natural meeting point before and after Stanford football games across the street.
Who it suits and group orders
Gott's is a good fit for a casual lunch or an early dinner when you want a burger that feels a step above fast food without the wait of a sit-down restaurant. Mixed groups do well here because the swaps cover vegetarians, vegan diners and people avoiding gluten. Sports fans get the bar area and TVs. Families get shakes, fries and plenty of patio space.
For larger needs, the Gott's website has separate pages for private events and boxed meals. It also sells gift cards and Gott's apparel online. If you are planning an office lunch or a team gathering, start with those pages rather than calling the Palo Alto restaurant directly.
