Dinah's Garden Hotel is one of the last independent, family-run hotels on El Camino Real. It opened in 1957 on what had been an apricot orchard and has stayed in the same family ever since. The grounds are the draw: low buildings set around gardens, a pond and an outdoor pool, a world away from the traffic out front. Add two restaurants, free parking and a suite with a model train running around the ceiling. Few hotels in town have as much personality.
This profile is based on the hotel's official website. We do not publish prices, star ratings or reviews. For live rates, check Dinah's Garden Hotel on Booking.com or book with the hotel directly.
Location and neighborhood
The hotel is at 4261 El Camino Real on the south stretch of the road, close to the Los Altos and Mountain View lines. Its neighbors include the Hilton Garden Inn and the Crowne Plaza Palo Alto, both within a short walk. The blocks behind El Camino Real are quiet residential streets. Our South Palo Alto guide covers the wider area.
The hotel says it is about three miles from Stanford University and downtown Palo Alto. It also points to the big tech campuses in Mountain View and along Highway 101, which are a short drive away. This is a driving location. You can walk to a handful of shops and restaurants on El Camino Real, but most outings need a car, a bus or a rideshare.
Getting there from Caltrain and the airports
The nearest Caltrain stop is San Antonio station in Mountain View, under a mile away in a straight line. Weekday local and limited trains stop there; express trains do not. From the station, a rideshare takes a few minutes. The California Avenue station is about two miles north.
VTA Route 22 and Rapid 522 run along El Camino Real and connect the hotel with the Palo Alto Transit Center and downtown Mountain View. Our VTA bus guide explains fares and frequency.
- From SFO: take BART to Millbrae and Caltrain south to San Antonio, then a short ride. See our SFO guide.
- From SJC: San Jose's airport is the closer of the two. Take the free VTA Route 60 to Santa Clara Transit Center and Caltrain north, or drive in roughly 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour. See our SJC guide.
The hotel's site describes its location as between the two airports but does not mention an airport shuttle.
A family hotel since 1957
The hotel's own history begins with a roadside restaurant. Dinah's Shack opened on El Camino Real in 1926 under Charles and Hazel McMonagle and was named for the family's nanny. In 1957 Milla and Raymond Handley and Raymond's partners built a hotel on the apricot orchard behind it. They wanted a quiet garden complex rather than an ordinary roadside motel.
The restaurant side changed over the decades. The hotel says the 1989 earthquake ruined the old Shack. Trader Vic's opened on the site in 2001 and closed in August 2012. THE SEA by Alexander's Steakhouse took its place that November after a major renovation. Raymond Handley died in 2009. His eldest daughter, Julie, took over management that year and became the owner in 2010. The hotel marked its 65th anniversary in May 2022.
Rooms and suites
The hotel's website lists three main room categories:
| Room | What the hotel lists |
|---|---|
| Garden Room | The entry category, set around the gardens |
| Deluxe Room | 465 square feet with a king bed, a twin pull-out sofa bed, a living area, a wet bar with sink and a large workspace, facing a quiet residential side |
| Railroad Baron Signature Suite | A train-themed suite honoring Leland Stanford, with an electric train running on a track around the ceiling |
The hotel says its Deluxe Rooms have new bathrooms, furniture and flooring. Public spaces are furnished with colonial-era pieces and original art from Africa, Asia and India. Ask about the layout and view when you book, since rooms vary across the low-rise buildings.

Dining on site
Few Palo Alto hotels have two restaurants. Dinah's does.
Dinah's Poolside Restaurant is the casual one. The hotel describes California cooking with Asian influences from chef Gerardo Naranjo, who spent nearly a decade at Alexander's Steakhouse. It serves breakfast, lunch, happy hour and dinner, plus beer, wine and cocktails. Room service runs all day. Our breakfast guide lists it among the city's sit-down morning options.
THE SEA by Alexander's Steakhouse is the dressier option, a seafood restaurant that also serves steak. It opened in 2012 in the building that once held Trader Vic's. Our seafood guide has more on it. Check the restaurant's page for current hours and reservations.
Parking and policies
Parking is free. The hotel's amenities page says it is "complimentary to all guests," which is rare in Palo Alto, where many hotels charge by the day. Pets are allowed in specific room types only, for a nonrefundable fee. Call the front desk before booking with a dog. The hotel's site does not list check-in times, so confirm them when you reserve. Current details are on the hotel's amenities page.
