Most firms on Sand Hill Road started in Silicon Valley. Battery Ventures started in Boston in 1983 and came west later. Today it lists a Menlo Park office at 2882 Sand Hill Road, a few doors from some of the oldest names in the business. It is also unusual in what it does. Battery invests in young startups but also buys established software companies outright, often in the same sector.

This profile is a neutral explainer for visitors and founders. It is based on Battery's website, its February 2026 fund announcement and published histories. For the basics of how venture funds work, see our venture capital guide.

Founding in Boston

Battery Ventures was founded in Boston in 1983. Published histories name Rick Frisbie, Howard Anderson and Bob Barrett as its founders. Boston in the early 1980s had its own technology cluster along Route 128, built around minicomputer makers and research from MIT and Harvard.

The firm's first fund in 1984 was small by today's standards. Over the following decades it raised a new flagship fund every few years and opened offices beyond Boston. Its website now says it has raised more than $16 billion since inception.

The Menlo Park office at 2882 Sand Hill Road

Battery's contact page lists six offices: Boston, San Francisco, Menlo Park, New York, London and Tel Aviv. The Silicon Valley base is 2882 Sand Hill Road, Suite 280, Menlo Park. The San Francisco office is at 140 New Montgomery Street.

The 2800 block is the western end of the venture corridor, close to the Interstate 280 interchange. Sequoia Capital is at 2800 Sand Hill Road and Rosewood Sand Hill is at 2825. Battery's office is private and does not take walk-in visitors. Our Sand Hill Road guide explains the layout of the road and where to park.

Focus areas and stages

Battery describes itself as a technology and software focused investment firm. Its website lists four core areas:

  • Application software. Business software sold to companies and industries.
  • Infrastructure software. The firm's 2026 fund announcement named data and AI, developer tools and cybersecurity within this group.
  • Consumer. Companies that sell to consumers.
  • Industrial tech and life science tools. A newer practice the firm has been expanding in the United States and Europe.

What makes Battery different from most of its neighbors is the range of stages. The firm says it regularly makes early, growth and buyout investments in the same technology sector. A buyout means buying a controlling stake in a mature company, usually a private equity move. The firm describes its style as collaborative and research focused. It publishes sector research on its blog. It calls its investors "decisive, hard-working and thesis-driven" and says its staff work as a single global unit rather than separate regional teams.

Notable investments

Battery's website features a long list of current and former portfolio companies. The firm notes that the list includes companies that were later acquired or went public. Names it features include:

AreaCompanies Battery features
Infrastructure and dataConfluent, Splunk, Nutanix, JFrog, Sumo Logic, AppDynamics
Business softwareMarketo, Coupa, Guidewire, Avalara, Braze, ServiceTitan
Consumer and marketplacesWayfair, Groupon, Glassdoor, HotelTonight, Skullcandy
FintechCoinbase, Affirm

In its February 2026 announcement Battery said it had invested in more than 530 companies since inception, not counting seed deals. It reported 73 IPOs and more than 225 mergers and acquisitions through September 30, 2025. It also said its funds had realized more than $10 billion in liquidity over the previous five years. These figures are the firm's own.

Funds

On February 18, 2026, Battery announced Battery Ventures XV, its 15th flagship fund, with $3.25 billion of capital. The firm described the fund as oversubscribed and said it would invest across early, growth and buyout deals in the United States, Europe and Israel. Its website says the firm is investing from that fund now.

For context, Battery's 14th fund and a companion Select fund were announced in July 2022 with a combined total of more than $3.8 billion, according to the firm's release at the time.

Portfolio support and the Battery Foundation

Like most large firms, Battery employs people whose job is to help portfolio companies rather than pick investments. Its website lists in-house teams for talent and recruiting, business development, marketing and communications, finance and analytics and go-to-market coaching from former operators. The firm says business development is "built into our DNA," meaning it works to connect portfolio executives with partners and potential customers.

In 2019 Battery created the Battery Foundation, a donor-advised fund at the Boston Foundation. According to the firm, it makes grants to nonprofit groups working on technology education, health and wellness, jobs and economic development and other grassroots causes.

How founders reach Battery

Battery's contact page lists each office with a phone number and links to the team there. It does not offer an open pitch form on the pages we checked. The usual path:

  1. Find the right partner. The people page sorts investors by sector. Match your company to the partner who covers it.
  2. Use the local office. Founders in the Bay Area will usually deal with the Menlo Park or San Francisco teams.
  3. Get an introduction. A founder, executive or co-investor who knows the partner is the most common route to a first meeting.
  4. Know which kind of deal you want. Because Battery does both venture and buyouts, be clear whether you are raising growth capital or open to a sale of control.

Our guides to pitching investors and term sheet basics explain the steps and terms involved. The glossary defines buyout, flagship fund and other words used above.

An East Coast firm on Sand Hill Road

Battery is one of several firms that began elsewhere and opened a Sand Hill Road office to be near Silicon Valley founders. The road's draw is simple. It sits between Stanford and Interstate 280, a short drive from Palo Alto, Menlo Park and the big tech campuses. Partners can meet a founder downtown in the morning and be back at their desks by lunch. Our history of venture capital on the Peninsula explains how the road became the industry's address.
