Music lessons are a way of life for many Palo Alto children. Plenty of their parents played an instrument years ago. The good news for adults who want to start or return is that the same teachers and schools take grown-up students. Several private schools teach every age. The public adult school runs group classes at Paly for a fraction of the cost. Community orchestras and bands rehearse every week for players who want to perform.

This guide covers lessons and ensembles for adults and families that we confirmed in October 2026. For young children's programs, see our classes for kids. For concerts to hear, see live music.

School of Rock Palo Alto at 2645 Middlefield Road in Midtown builds lessons around playing in a band. Its Adult Program is for ages 18 and over. Students take lessons, rehearse songs together and play live shows at local venues every few months, which suits anyone who practices better with a gig on the calendar.

Group classes at the Palo Alto Adult School

The Palo Alto Adult School offers the cheapest structured path back to an instrument. Its fall 2026 catalog listed:

  • Piano, beginning and intermediate: nine weeks on Wednesday evenings at Paly for $135, on keyboards provided in class. You need a keyboard at home to practice. Limit 10 students.
  • Violin, beginning and intermediate: ten weeks on Tuesday or Thursday evenings for $200. Bring your own violin. Limit 12 students.
  • Taiko: Japanese drumming at Cubberley Community Center on Wednesday evenings, with drums provided. Fall fees ran $60 to $100 plus a materials fee. An advanced Odaiko class is by audition.

The fall quarter ends December 18 and the winter catalog follows on the Adult School website. Fees are the same for residents and nonresidents.

Community ensembles

Playing with others is the fastest way to improve once you can read music. These groups rehearse weekly:

The Peninsula Symphonic Band says percussionists and tubists are especially needed and plays traditional, popular and classical music. Its next free concert is listed for Sunday, November 22, 2026, at 3 p.m., with donations welcome. The Palo Alto Philharmonic is all volunteer and says it is actively looking for string players, particularly violas and cellos. Its winds and brass are mostly full, but it keeps a substitute list. Master Sinfonia performs four concerts a year, with repertoire from Mozart and Brahms to John Adams.

Community School of Music and Arts

CSMA is a nonprofit arts school at the Finn Center, 230 San Antonio Circle, Mountain View, with more than 50 years of teaching. Adult group classes cover choir and voice, guitar, piano, music theory, digital music and coached ensembles. It also teaches private lessons for all ages and advertised $30 trial music lessons in October 2026. Classes run by semester, need a minimum enrollment and have no make-up sessions. Its adult class pages showed no open sections in late October, so check the CSMA site for the next term.

College and university options

Foothill College in Los Altos Hills teaches piano, voice and guitar for credit and has a piano lab with 24 weighted keyboards. Winter 2027 classes run January 4 to March 26, with priority registration from November 9. Stanford Continuing Studies lists music among its course areas. Check each course page for format, since many are taught online. In summer, the Stanford Jazz Workshop runs camps where adults study with professional jazz players.

Gryphon and folk instruments

Gryphon Stringed Instruments at 211 Lambert Avenue has sold guitars, mandolins, banjos and ukuleles since 1969. Its history page says the shop began hosting Carol McComb's Folk Guitar Workshops after moving to its current corner in 1975. That grew into years of group and private instruction. Its news page has posted online group ukulele classes. We could not confirm a 2026 lesson schedule, so ask in the shop, which is open Tuesday to Saturday.

Tips for adult beginners

  1. Rent or borrow before you buy. Ask your teacher what to look for. Note that Gryphon says it does not rent instruments.
  2. Book a trial. New Mozart and CSMA both offer trial lessons. Fit with the teacher matters more than the school's name.
  3. Practice little and often. Fifteen minutes a day beats two hours on Sunday.
  4. Play for people. The Monday open mic at Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View welcomes musicians of every level. See comedy and open mics.
