Palo Alto has more places to dance than its quiet streets suggest. A classical ballet school trains children in the Russian Vaganova method on California Avenue. A neighborhood studio in Midtown teaches hip hop, jazz and contemporary to kids and a few grown-ups. On Friday nights, couples and singles fill the wooden floor of the Cubberley Pavilion for ballroom lessons and a social dance. Just south in Mountain View, a long-running ballet company runs open adult classes.

This guide covers the studios and programs we confirmed in October 2026. Class times, levels and prices change from session to session, so treat the details below as a starting point and check each studio's own page. For children's classes beyond dance, see our kids classes guide.

Victoria Ballet: classical training

Victoria Ballet is a classical ballet school with a Palo Alto studio at 370 California Avenue and a second studio at 151 Main Street in Los Altos. It teaches the Vaganova method, a structured Russian system known for careful progression. Founder Victoria Lee has taught since 1995 and opened in California in 2022, according to the school.

Children

Children move up a clear ladder. Petit Ballet is for ages 3 to 5 and Pre-Ballet for 5 to 7. Levels I through V follow, ending with full technique, pointe and repertoire classes for dancers about 13 to 16. An audition-based competition team and private lessons serve serious students. The school's big show is The Nutcracker, listed for December 11 and 12, 2026, at the Hammer Theatre in San José.

Adults

Adults can take beginner and intermediate ballet. The school says adult classes run in the evenings in Palo Alto and in the mornings in Los Altos, with class packs or unlimited monthly options. The Palo Alto studio also has a weekly hip hop class for ages 9 and up on Wednesday afternoons. Trial classes are available year-round and registration runs through the school's Victoria Edu portal.

Luna Dance Studio: hip hop, jazz and contemporary

Luna Dance Studio at 2635 Middlefield Road in Midtown is a community studio that marked its tenth anniversary in 2026. It teaches boys and girls from age 2 to 18 and adults, with a second studio on El Camino Real in Menlo Park.

The Palo Alto schedule runs on weekday afternoons and evenings. Styles include ballet and hip hop combo classes for children from age 3, hip hop groups by age, jazz and jazz funk, teen ballet and contemporary and an advanced contemporary ballet class. Grown-ups get an adult hip hop class on Tuesday evenings. Many of the younger classes show as sold out on the studio's site, so register early. In summer, Luna runs weeklong morning dance camps at one or both studios.

Ballroom at the Cubberley Pavilion

The Cubberley Pavilion at the Cubberley Community Center, 4000 Middlefield Road, is the city's home for social ballroom dancing. The organizers describe it as one of the most comfortable and friendly places to dance in the Bay Area and call its floor the single largest dance floor in the United States. One dance listing puts the all-wood floor at 11,700 square feet.

The format suits beginners. Each evening opens with drop-in lessons in a dance such as swing, hustle, rumba, tango or waltz, taught at beginning, intermediate and advanced levels. A dance party follows. You never need to bring a partner. Dancers switch partners often during lessons, which is the fastest way to meet people.

Good to know

  • As of the organizers' late September 2026 update, the dances run in person on Fridays. Saturday and Wednesday dances were listed as on hold.
  • Check the dance calendar on the Pavilion website for the lesson topics before you go.
  • Wear shoes with smooth soles that turn easily. Rubber sneakers stick to wood floors.
  • For questions, the organizers list a phone line at 650/856-6991.

Western Ballet, Mountain View

Adults who want more ballet than one evening a week can look south to Western Ballet at 914 North Rengstorff Avenue in Mountain View. Its Open Program has adult classes at levels from Absolute Beginners through Intermediate, plus a pointe class at the beginning and intermediate level. Discounted class packages let you drop in rather than commit to a full term. The school has kept some online classes for the Open Program too. Children train in a separate Youth Program with its own calendar. The Nutcracker appears among Western Ballet's own performances.

City classes and the Children's Theatre

The City of Palo Alto publishes a seasonal catalog called Enjoy! that covers art, music, dance, theater, sports and fitness classes for all ages. You browse and register through Enjoy! Online, which runs on CivicRec Rec1. Winter 2027 registration opens December 3, 2026, for residents and December 10 for nonresidents. Dance listings vary each season, so search the catalog when it opens.

The Palo Alto Children's Theatre at 1305 Middlefield Road runs classes, camps and productions for young people from age 3. It also brings Dance in Schools classes to every PAUSD elementary school for kindergarten through 2nd grade. Our theater guide covers its season.

Dance-inspired workouts

Not everyone wants to learn choreography. Barre classes borrow the ballet barre, small pulses and posture work from dance and turn them into a low-impact workout. Pure Barre at 267 California Avenue teaches 45 to 50 minute classes in five formats and offers a free first class, according to its directory listing. It is on the same street as Victoria Ballet, so a curious adult can compare a barre workout with a real ballet class in the same afternoon.

Reformer Pilates studios also appeal to dancers who want to build core strength between classes. Our yoga and Pilates guide lists the studios in town. If you danced as a child and want to return, a few weeks of barre or Pilates is a gentle way to rebuild strength before a full ballet or contemporary class.

Tips for new dancers

  1. Start with a trial. A single class tells you more about a teacher than any website.
  2. Ask about levels. Adult beginner classes vary a lot. Ask whether "beginner" means brand new or returning.
  3. Dress for the style. Ballet needs fitted clothing and soft shoes. Hip hop works in sneakers. Ballroom calls for smooth-soled shoes.
  4. Make it social. A Friday at the Pavilion is an easy date night, with no partner experience needed.
  5. Watch a performance. Seeing the pros helps. Stanford Live brings dance companies to campus and holiday Nutcracker shows fill December. See our holiday guide.
