For years, Palo Alto climbers had to drive. That changed in May 2025, when Movement opened a bouldering gym at the corner of San Antonio Road and El Camino Real in Mountain View, a few hundred yards from the Palo Alto city line. Touchstone Climbing runs Hyperion, a large bouldering gym in Redwood City. Rope climbing still means a short trip to Sunnyvale, Belmont or downtown San Jose.
This guide covers the gyms we confirmed on their own websites in October 2026, what kind of climbing each one offers and how a beginner gets started. Day pass rates, membership prices and hours change often, so we point you to each gym's page rather than repeat them. For general gyms and studios, see our gyms and fitness guide.
Bouldering or ropes?
Indoor climbing comes in two main forms and the gyms near Palo Alto split between them.
- Bouldering means short walls, usually under about 15 feet, over thick padded floors. You climb without a rope or harness and step down or drop onto the mats. All you need is shoes and chalk. Problems are graded by difficulty and reset every few weeks.
- Top rope and lead climbing use tall walls, a harness and a partner who belays you. Gyms ask new climbers to take a belay class or pass a belay check before climbing on their own. Some gyms also have auto belay devices for solo laps.
Most beginners start with bouldering because there is less to learn before the first climb. If you want to try ropes, book an intro class at a gym that has them.

How to get started
- Book an intro class. Movement lists free intro to bouldering classes and, where it has ropes, free intro to rope climbing. Touchstone gyms list their own options for new climbers, so ask at the desk.
- Sign the waiver online. Every gym requires one. Doing it at home saves time at the front desk.
- Rent shoes the first time. Gyms rent climbing shoes and harnesses. Buy your own once you know you like it.
- Try a trial membership. Movement offers a 15 day trial with unlimited climbing, yoga and fitness, plus free gear rental and access to its intro classes.
- Learn the etiquette. Wait your turn at the base of a problem, stay off the mats under other climbers and brush holds you chalk up heavily.
Good to know
- Weekday evenings after work tend to be the busiest time at climbing gyms. Late mornings are usually quieter.
- Wear clothes you can stretch in. Leave rings and watches in a locker.
- Children usually need a parent or guardian to sign the waiver. Ask each gym about age rules before a visit.
Kids, teens and parties
Climbing is a strong pick for active kids and teenagers who do not enjoy team sports. Movement Mountain View and Movement Santa Clara have dedicated kids' climbing areas. Both Movement and Touchstone run youth programs, competitive youth teams and school break camps, which fill early in summer. Many families also book climbing gyms for birthdays. Our birthday party guide and teens guide have more ideas around town.
Taking it outside
Gym climbing is a good way to build strength for real rock. The Santa Cruz Mountains above Palo Alto have sandstone boulders and small crags. Yosemite is a day's drive away. Outdoor climbing carries real risk, so learn from a guide or an experienced partner and follow park rules on closures and protected areas. If the weather turns, a gym session is one of the best rainy day ideas in the area.
