Rubrik is one of the newer large companies with a Palo Alto headquarters. It makes software that backs up business data and helps companies recover when that data is attacked, corrupted or deleted. Founded in 2014, it went public in April 2024 and lists its principal executive offices at 3495 Deer Creek Road in Stanford Research Park.

That address puts it on the same road as 3500 Deer Creek Road, the former Hewlett-Packard and Agilent plant that served as Tesla's headquarters from 2010 to 2021. Deer Creek Road has hosted a lot of Palo Alto company history for a short street in the hills above Foothill Expressway.

What Rubrik does

Every company keeps backups. For decades the job meant copying data to tape or to a second set of disks and hoping nobody needed it. Rubrik set out to make backup simpler to run and faster to restore, first for company data centers and then for cloud services.

Over time its pitch shifted from backup to security. Ransomware gangs learned to encrypt or delete backups before demanding payment. Rubrik now describes its products as zero trust data security. The software keeps copies that attackers cannot change, watches data for signs of tampering and helps a company bring systems back quickly after an incident.

Its customers are mostly large organizations that run hybrid setups, with some systems in their own data centers and some in the cloud. Consumers do not buy Rubrik products.

Demand for this kind of product rose with ransomware. Analysts and trade press have pointed to the growth of ransomware and other attacks as a main reason companies started paying more attention to how their backups are protected. Rubrik's marketing leans heavily on recovery after an attack rather than on storage alone.

The founders

Rubrik was founded in January 2014 by four people.

  • Bipul Sinha was a partner at Lightspeed Venture Partners before starting the company. He became chief executive and still holds the role. He holds several patents on distributed storage.
  • Arvind Jain is a former Google engineer. He later left Rubrik and in 2019 co-founded Glean, an enterprise search company.
  • Soham Mazumdar and Arvind Nithrakashyap rounded out the founding team on the engineering side.

Lightspeed backed the company from the start. Its office on Sand Hill Road is a few miles from Deer Creek Road. Our Lightspeed profile covers the firm. When Rubrik filed to go public, CNBC reported that Lightspeed owned about 24 percent of the company and Greylock about 12 percent, with Sinha, Jain and Nithrakashyap each holding roughly 7 percent.

Funding and growth

Rubrik raised money fast during the late 2010s software boom. A few milestones stand out.

  1. May 2017. Institutional Venture Partners led a $180 million Series D round that valued Rubrik at about $1.3 billion.
  2. 2018. Rubrik bought Datos.io, a cloud data management startup.
  3. January 2019. A $261 million round led by Bain Capital Ventures valued the company at about $3.3 billion. Lightspeed, Greylock, Khosla Ventures and IVP also took part.
  4. December 2020. It bought the assets of Igneous, a Seattle storage company.
  5. August 2023. It announced the purchase of Laminar, an Israeli cloud data security company, for a reported $200 million.

The board also drew attention. John W. Thompson, a former chairman of Microsoft, joined it as a director.

Two details from these years got wide press coverage. Sinha said he invited all employees to board meetings as a form of radical transparency when the company had about 900 staff. The basketball player Kevin Durant also invested, describing Rubrik as his first technology investment.

The 2024 public listing

Rubrik filed to go public on April 1, 2024. CNBC reported that the company had about 3,100 employees at the time. Its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange on April 25, 2024, under the ticker RBRK. It priced the offering at $32 a share, above its target range. The sale raised $752 million.

The listing made Rubrik one of the few Palo Alto headquartered software companies to go public in the mid 2020s. This page does not comment on the stock or the company's finances. Rubrik's fiscal year ends January 31. Its annual and quarterly filings give official figures for revenue and headcount.

Life on Deer Creek Road

Rubrik's filings list 3495 Deer Creek Road, Palo Alto, CA 94304 as its principal executive offices. The address appears on a current report the company filed on March 12, 2026. We could not confirm from primary sources when Rubrik moved to Deer Creek Road or which Palo Alto offices it used in its first years, so we leave those details out.

Deer Creek Road climbs through the hilly upper part of Stanford Research Park, above Foothill Expressway. Like every research park tenant, Rubrik's building sits on land Stanford leases out but does not sell. Our Stanford Research Park guide explains how those ground leases work.

The neighbor at 3500 Deer Creek Road was one of the biggest stories in Palo Alto business history. Tesla made it the company's headquarters in 2010 and kept it until the headquarters moved to Austin in 2021. Our Tesla in Palo Alto profile has that story.

Rubrik's place in the local ecosystem

Rubrik is a good example of how Palo Alto's startup system recycles people and money. A venture partner left his firm to found a company with a team that included a former Google engineer. Sand Hill Road firms funded it. One co-founder then left to start Glean. Each step stayed within a few miles of Stanford.

The company is also one of a handful of large software employers in the research park. Others include SAP, whose Palo Alto campus we profile on our SAP Labs page. Broadcom's VMware business on Hillview Avenue is another. For job seekers, our guide to finding a tech job in Palo Alto covers how hiring works in the area.
