Most people never hear of Machinify, but if you have health insurance in the United States there is a fair chance its software has looked at one of your claims. The company sells artificial intelligence tools and services that help health plans pay medical bills correctly. It started as a small Palo Alto software company in 2016. After a series of deals it is now a much larger business headquartered in Dallas, with its Palo Alto office on High Street.
This profile explains what Machinify does, how it grew and how it fits into Palo Alto's health technology scene. Like most companies in our Palo Alto companies guide, it has no public space to visit.
What Machinify does
Health plans pay billions of claims a year. Some go to the wrong payer, some carry coding mistakes and some should be paid by another party, such as a car insurer after an accident. Checking for those problems is called payment integrity. It has long relied on large teams of reviewers and outside vendors.
Machinify's pitch is to do much of that review with AI. Its website describes a unified data layer that pulls together claims, medical records, contracts and policies, plus foundation models trained on healthcare data and task-specific agents. People stay in the loop. The company says expert reviewers check the output and their corrections feed back into the models.
Product lines
Machinify groups its work into five product lines:
- Coordinate. Finds the right payer for a claim when a patient has more than one source of coverage.
- Subrogate. Recovers money when someone else, such as an auto insurer, is responsible for a medical bill.
- Audit. Reviews claims, medical records and itemized bills for coding and clinical errors.
- Pay. Recodes and reprices claims before they are paid.
- Pharmacy. Applies the same checks to drug claims.
Customers can run these tools themselves, hand the work to Machinify or use a mix of both. On its home page the company says it serves more than 90 customers, including 18 of the top 20 health plans. It says its work covers about 270 million member lives. Those are company figures.
Founding in Palo Alto
Machinify began as a Palo Alto startup. Its profile on a startup job board gives a founding year of 2016, a seed round that March and a $10 million Series A in October 2018. Business Wire carried the Series A announcement, which described the goal as a "data to cash" AI platform for healthcare.
Prasanna Ganesan is listed as a co-founder. He remains the company's chief technology officer and appears on its leadership page today. The early company was a software team. The later deals added large groups of clinical, legal and recovery experts, which is why Machinify now describes itself as combining AI with more than 40 years of industry experience.
The deals that reshaped it
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 2016 | Founded in Palo Alto. |
| October 2018 | $10 million Series A announced. |
| January 10, 2025 | New Mountain Capital agrees to acquire Machinify and combine it with The Rawlings Group, Apixio's payment integrity business and Varis. |
| October 17, 2025 | Performant Healthcare stockholders approve the sale to Machinify. |
| October 2025 | Machinify completes its purchase of Performant Healthcare for about $670 million. |
The January 2025 deal was the turning point. New Mountain Capital, a New York investment firm, agreed to buy Machinify and make it the core of a company recently formed from three payment integrity businesses. The combined company took the Machinify name. Fierce Healthcare described the result as a $5 billion medical payments company. Cooley, the law firm with an office in Stanford Research Park, advised Machinify on the deal.
Performant Healthcare, which had been listed on the Nasdaq, brought audit and recovery work and deep ties to government health programs. Its stockholders approved the sale on October 17, 2025. The deal closed later that month.

The company says its teams are spread across the country.
The Palo Alto office is the company's original home. 635 High Street sits in University South, the neighborhood just south of the University Avenue shopping blocks that wraps around Professorville. Our University South walking tour covers the neighborhood's older houses and commercial strips.
Machinify in Palo Alto's health tech scene
Palo Alto has a long line of health technology companies, helped by Stanford Medicine, nearby hospitals and investors who fund the sector. Machinify works on the payment side of health care rather than diagnosis or treatment. Other Palo Alto health AI companies include Hippocratic AI, which builds voice agents that talk with patients. Both use AI on the paperwork and phone calls that surround medical care.
We found no formal Stanford partnership in Machinify's materials. The link is the local talent pool. Data scientists, engineers and clinicians trained at Stanford and at Peninsula tech companies are the people a company like this hires.
Working at Machinify
Machinify's careers page lists open roles with their locations. Its profile on a startup job board names Palo Alto as an office location. The same profile mentions remote work anywhere in the United States as a benefit. Engineering, data science, clinical review and sales roles all appear at different times. If you are moving here for a role, our guide to finding a tech job in Palo Alto covers housing and commutes.
If you received a Rawlings questionnaire
The Rawlings Group, now part of Machinify, sends questionnaires to health plan members. The forms ask whether an accident or another insurer might be responsible for a medical bill. Machinify's website has a page for people who receive one. If you are unsure whether a letter is genuine, call the member services number on your insurance card rather than a number printed on the letter.
Visiting and nearby
There is nothing to visit. The High Street office is private. The company offers no tours or demo space for the public. Business inquiries go through the company's website. Do not walk in to ask for a demo.
