Palo Alto has an unusual number of places to lie down on a bed. Two Swedish makers of luxury beds keep showrooms here, one downtown and one at Stanford Shopping Center. Three other brands run their own showrooms for testing. A Bay Area mattress chain has a store on El Camino Real. A department store has a mattress department too. Prices run from mainstream to very high, so it pays to know which showroom fits your budget before you start.

This guide groups the stores by area and explains what each one sells. We confirmed every store on its own store page or the shopping center's 2026 directory. Mattress stores often change hours and promotions, so check before you visit.

Downtown: DUXIANA and Avocado

DUXIANA at 534 Bryant Street is the showroom for DUX, a bed maker founded in Malmö, Sweden, in 1926. The DUX bed is a component system, built from parts that can be adjusted, replaced or upgraded as they wear rather than throwing out the whole bed. The brand is marking its centennial in 2026. Its locator lists hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closed Sunday. The early close catches people out, so plan a weekday or Saturday visit.

Two blocks away, Avocado Green Mattress runs a showroom at 370 University Avenue. The brand, founded in 2016, sells certified organic mattresses in firmness levels from ultra-plush to extra firm, plus sheets, throws, pillows and reclaimed wood furniture. Staff provide clean linens for each guest and help you order. The mattress then ships to your home, while bedding can go home with you the same day. Avocado says its floor staff do not work on commission. The showroom is open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day and closes on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Stanford Shopping Center

Hästens

Hästens began as a saddlery in Sweden in 1852 and is still run by the founding family. Its beds are handmade from horsehair, cotton, wool and flax. The Palo Alto store offers a private Sleep Spa Session of 60 to 90 minutes, where a sleep coach helps you choose tension, pillow height and support. You can book online, but next-day slots must be booked by phone. Prices are not posted, so ask for a quote. This is the top of the market.

Tempur-Pedic

The Tempur-Pedic flagship at 600 Stanford Shopping Center pairs each visitor with a sleep expert to compare foam mattresses, adjustable bases with head and foot lift, pillows and sheets. The store page lists a 90-night trial, free white glove delivery with setup and old mattress removal and a 10-year warranty. It keeps the center's hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Bloomingdale's

Bloomingdale's has a mattress department on its third level, alongside bedding and special-order linens. A department store lets you compare several brands in one place, which a single-brand showroom cannot. Ask which models are on the floor before you go.

El Camino Real: Sleep Number and Mancini's

Sleep Number at 2675 El Camino Real, Suite B, sits at the Page Mill Road corner, across from the Mayfield Soccer Complex. Its beds use air chambers so each sleeper can set a different firmness. The store offers free pressure mapping, which shows where your body presses into the mattress. It is open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day.

Mancini's Sleepworld at 2080 El Camino Real is the multi-brand choice. Carl and Patsy Mancini founded the Bay Area chain in 1969. Its website lists innerspring, memory foam, hybrid and bed-in-a-box models from brands including Tempur-Pedic, Avocado and Casper, along with frames and bedding. The company describes a SleepMatch fitting system, a 120-night comfort guarantee (365 nights with a premium protector) and old mattress removal. Hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. The nearest sister store is outside Palo Alto at 2034 West El Camino Real in Mountain View.

How to test a mattress

  1. Dress for it. Wear clothes you can lie down in and shoes you can slip off.
  2. Lie in your sleep position. Spend at least five to ten minutes on each finalist, on your side, back or stomach as you sleep at home.
  3. Bring your partner. Test motion by having one person roll over while the other lies still.
  4. Bring your pillow. Pillow height changes how a mattress feels under your shoulders.
  5. Write it down. Note model names and firmness, since names differ between stores.
  6. Read the trial terms. Ask about minimum nights, exchange fees and who pays for pickup.
  7. Measure first. Check doorways, stairs and the bed frame before delivery day.

What to do with the old mattress

Palo Alto has no public drop-off for bulky waste, so plan ahead for the old bed. Some stores, including Tempur-Pedic and Mancini's, list old mattress removal with delivery. Ask whether it is included in your price. If not, GreenWaste of Palo Alto collects mattresses and box springs on your Clean Up Day, up to three bulky items, at no extra charge. For a pickup at another time, the city's July 2026 rate schedule lists $15.45 per mattress, billed on your utility bill. California's Bye Bye Mattress program also lists free drop-off sites. Our bulky item pickup guide explains how to book.

When to buy

Mattress prices move with the calendar. Chains often run their biggest promotions around long holiday weekends, such as Presidents' Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. Late November brings another round. Our Black Friday guide covers holiday shopping hours in Palo Alto. Luxury makers such as Hästens and DUX discount less often, so the trial terms and delivery matter more than timing there. If you are moving, order early. Delivery windows vary by model. Custom configurations usually take longer than stock sizes. Ask whether the store will hold a floor model or a delivery date if your move-in date slips.

Good to know

  • DUXIANA closes at 5 p.m. and all day Sunday.
  • Hästens' bed test takes up to 90 minutes. Do not squeeze it into the end of a shopping day.
  • Get delivery dates, warranty length and return fees in writing.

Sheets, pillows and the rest of the bed

A new mattress often means new sheets. Frette's boutique at Stanford Shopping Center sells Italian bed linens, towels and robes. Pottery Barn sells bedding and bedroom furniture. RH's three-story gallery on El Camino Real shows beds and other furniture. Avocado sells organic sheets and pillows in its showroom. Our home and design guide covers furniture stores across the city.
