The long Thanksgiving weekend is the start of holiday shopping season in Palo Alto, but the town splits it two ways. On Black Friday, crowds head to Stanford Shopping Center, which opens two hours early, or drive to the outlet malls that open at dawn. On Saturday, the focus shifts to Small Business Saturday, the national day for independent shops that began in 2010. In Palo Alto that means family bookstores, chocolate makers and specialty shops on University Avenue, California Avenue and at Town & Country Village.
In 2026 Black Friday falls on Friday, November 27 and Small Business Saturday on Saturday, November 28. The Saturday is also Stanford's last home football game, which affects traffic along El Camino Real. This guide covers hours, closures, parking and where to shop each day.
What is open and closed
The day after Thanksgiving is a city holiday in Palo Alto. Here is how the two days look, based on what agencies and centers had published as of late October 2026:
| Service | Black Friday, Nov. 27 | Small Business Saturday, Nov. 28 |
|---|---|---|
| City offices | Closed (city holiday) | Closed, as on any Saturday |
| Libraries | Closed | Normal Saturday hours |
| Trash pickup | Thursday routes picked up | Friday routes picked up |
| Caltrain | Modified schedule | Regular weekend schedule |
| Stanford Shopping Center | 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. | 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. |
| Downtown farmers market | None | Open Saturday morning |
| Household hazardous waste station | Normal | Closed |
Caltrain's holiday service page lists a modified schedule for Friday. The timetable is posted a few weeks ahead. Monthly passes are honored for unlimited travel that day. Residential permit parking limits are not enforced on city holidays, so Friday parking near downtown is easier than usual. Our holiday closures guide has the full list.
Black Friday at Stanford Shopping Center
Stanford Shopping Center is the main event in town. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day and opens from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Black Friday, according to its hours page. The rest of the weekend runs 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. From November 30 the center keeps longer holiday hours, mostly 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. through mid-December.
Department stores such as Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom set their own hours inside those times. Some open earlier. Check each store's page the night before.

Parking and timing
- Arrive early or late. Garages and lots fill by late morning on Black Friday. The first hour after opening and the last two hours before closing are calmer.
- Know the garages. Our Stanford Shopping Center parking guide explains where to find space.
- Eat off-peak. Restaurants at the center fill from noon to 2 p.m. A late breakfast or a 3 p.m. lunch saves a wait.
- Watch Saturday traffic. Stanford hosts SMU at Stanford Stadium on November 28. Game traffic backs up El Camino Real near the center and Town & Country Village.
The outlet malls
For deeper discounts, three Simon outlet centers are within reach. Gilroy Premium Outlets, San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore and the Great Mall in Milpitas all list Black Friday hours of 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on November 27, 2026. All three are closed on Thanksgiving. The Great Mall is the closest, about 15 miles east. Gilroy and Livermore are each about an hour's drive without traffic. Our outlet malls guide compares them.
Without a car, the Great Mall is reachable by Caltrain and VTA light rail in about an hour. For the farther centers, a car is the practical choice. Visitors can compare rental cars for the day.
Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday asks shoppers to spend the day after Black Friday at local independent stores. Palo Alto had no city or business district program for it posted as of November 1, 2026. The city has run Uplift Local holiday promotions for local businesses in past Decembers, including 2021 and 2023. Its December 2025 roundup focused on the tree lightings at Lytton Plaza and on California Avenue. Watch the city's news page in late November for any 2026 promotion.
Even without an official event, the independents are open and ready. A short list to start from:
Books
- Bell's Books at 536 Emerson Street has been family owned since 1935 and sells new, used and rare books across two floors.
- Books Inc. at Town & Country Village sells books, gifts, games and toys and opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays.
Games, music and gifts
- Gamelandia on California Avenue is a tabletop game store with a 600-game open play library.
- Gryphon Stringed Instruments has sold guitars, mandolins and ukuleles in Palo Alto since 1969. It is open Tuesday to Saturday.
Chocolate and sweets
- Sweet 55 at Town & Country Village sells small-batch chocolates made in Half Moon Bay.
- Timothy Adams Chocolates and Alegio Chocolate are both on Bryant Street downtown. Alegio is open from noon on Fridays and Saturdays.
Town & Country Village on El Camino Real gathers many of these in one walkable center with its own surface lots. Our Town & Country Village guide lists the shops.
A Saturday route
- Start at the downtown farmers market for coffee and a pastry.
- Browse Bell's Books and the shops along University Avenue and Emerson Street.
- Drive or bike to Town & Country Village for lunch, but leave before the football crowds arrive.
- Finish on California Avenue, where the car-free block makes for easy browsing.
Eating between stops
Shopping days run on snacks. Stanford Shopping Center has the biggest choice, from sit-down restaurants to quick counters. Shake Shack faces El Camino Real, Tender Greens serves plates and salads, Sprinkles bakes cupcakes and Sigona's sells fruit, cheese and gift baskets. Our guide to eating at Stanford Shopping Center lists them all. At Town & Country Village, Gott's Roadside has a heated patio and Boichik Bagels opens at 7 a.m. for early shoppers.
Downtown, coffee is never far away. On Saturday morning the farmers market sells pastries and fruit. The cafes along University Avenue open early too. Book dinner ahead if you plan to eat downtown on Saturday night, since holiday weekends with a home game fill tables early.
Good to know
- Palo Alto's sales tax rate is 9.75% since October 1, 2026.
- The White Plaza post office at Stanford closed on October 31, 2026. Mail gifts from Hamilton Station at 380 Hamilton Avenue or the Cambridge post office at 265 Cambridge Avenue.
- Cyber Monday follows on November 30, 2026.
- Shop small but pay attention to return policies. Independent stores often offer exchanges rather than refunds.
What comes next
The holiday season moves quickly after Thanksgiving weekend. Christmas in the Park in downtown San Jose opens on Black Friday, November 27. It runs to January 1, 2027. In Palo Alto, the Gamble Garden Holiday Marketplace runs December 4 and 5, the Palo Alto Art Center Studio Holiday Sale is on Saturday, December 5 and the city lights its tree at Lytton Plaza on Friday, December 4. Our holiday shopping guide keeps the December calendar.
