Between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day, Palo Alto goes quiet. Stanford students left in mid-December, the university shuts its offices for a winter closure, local schools are on break and business travel all but stops. Commute traffic disappears. Downtown is calm by day and glows by night. For visitors, it is an easy week to explore, as long as you know which doors are shut and when.
This guide covers December 24, 2026 through January 1, 2027. Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Friday this season, which gives many people two long weekends back to back. Here you will find closures by day, transit changes, where to see the lights, how to plan skating at the Winter Lodge and what to expect at Stanford. For the whole month, see our December guide. For holiday events earlier in the season, read our holiday season guide.

Mitchell Park and Rinconada libraries were not named in the week-long closure, but their hours may still change. Check the library's hours page before you go. Shopping center hours come from the center's hours page. Individual stores can differ. The city had not posted its 2027 holiday list when we checked, so confirm New Year's Day office hours on the holiday closures page.
Getting around
Caltrain lists a modified schedule on Christmas Eve, a weekend schedule on Christmas Day and the regular weekday schedule on New Year's Eve. Modified timetables appear a few weeks ahead. On New Year's Day 2026 Caltrain ran a weekend schedule. The railroad has made rides free on recent New Year's Eves and added late trains from San Francisco after the fireworks. In 2024 the last one left at 2 a.m. Watch the holiday service page and read our Caltrain guide.
Roads are the emptiest of the year. Downtown parking is easy on weekdays and residential permit limits are not enforced on city holidays.
Stanford's quiet campus
Stanford's pages list the university's winter closure as December 21, 2026 to January 1, 2027. With the weekends on either side, most offices are dark from December 19 through January 3. Student housing closed on December 12 after autumn quarter. Winter quarter classes begin on January 4, 2027.
What that means for a visit:
- The grounds stay open. You can walk the Main Quad, Palm Drive and the outdoor Rodin Sculpture Garden, which is open all the time. The campus is almost silent, which makes it a lovely time for photos.
- Many buildings close. The Stanford Visitor Center closes from mid-December to early January. Hoover Tower closes during the winter closure and its observation deck is shut until January 25, 2027 anyway. The Stanford Live box office closes too.
- Museums vary. The Cantor Arts Center and Anderson Collection set their own holiday schedules. Both are normally closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check their websites the week you go.
- Shuttles thin out. In the 2024 to 2025 closure, Marguerite service was limited mainly to the medical center and did not run on Christmas or New Year's Day. Expect a similar pattern.
- Food is scarce. Many campus cafes close or cut hours. Eat downtown or at Stanford Shopping Center instead.

Where to see the lights
- Christmas Tree Lane. Since 1940, residents of the 1700 and 1800 blocks of Fulton Street have lined the sidewalks with lit fir trees. The lights usually stay on nightly through December 31. In 2024 they came on December 14. It is a neighborhood tradition with no official current website and 2026 dates had not been announced by late October. See our holiday lights guide. Walk rather than drive.
- Downtown. The city's holiday tree at Lytton Plaza is lit on December 4, 2026. University Avenue's shop windows make for a pleasant evening stroll.
- Stanford Shopping Center. The open-air center decorates its walkways for the season.
- Filoli. The estate's evening Holiday Lights in Woodside run until January 10, 2027. Buy timed tickets ahead and check which nights are open. See our Filoli guide.
Skating at the Winter Lodge
The holiday week is peak season at the Winter Lodge, the outdoor rink on Middlefield Road. It closes on December 24, December 25 and January 1, so the open days are December 26 to 31. The rink's holiday tree stays up through the first weekend of January. Public session tickets are sold online only, up to 30 days ahead. Book as soon as sessions appear, since school break afternoons sell out first. Dress in layers and bring gloves. Evenings near 40°F feel colder on the ice. Our ice skating guide compares other rinks nearby.
Fresh air between feasts
The holiday week often brings clear, cold days between storms. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give December an average high of 57.6°F and a low of 38.6°F, the coldest nights of the year. The California King Tides Project lists December 23 to 25, 2026 as king tide dates, when the highest tides of the season flood the marsh at the Baylands. Winter birding is at its peak. If it rains, our rainy day guide has indoor ideas.
New Year's Eve and Day
Palo Alto rings in the new year over dinner rather than in the street. There is no city countdown that we could confirm and fireworks of every kind are illegal in Palo Alto. Locals who want fireworks take Caltrain to San Francisco. Book New Year's Eve dinner early, since set menus fill weeks ahead. On New Year's Day, parks and trails are open and a walk at the Baylands is a local tradition. Our New Year's Eve guide covers dinners and late trains. For January plans, see Palo Alto in January.
Hotels and booking
This is usually the softest week of the year for Palo Alto hotels. Business travel stops and Stanford is closed, so weekday rates at business hotels often fall. It is a good week for a quiet, well-priced stay or for families visiting relatives in town. Compare Palo Alto hotels for the holiday week and choose a refundable rate in case winter storms change your plans.
Good to know
- Return books to the Children's, College Terrace or Downtown library before December 24.
- Friday trash routes move to Saturday on both holiday weeks.
- Check for a Spare the Air alert before lighting a fire on Christmas or New Year's Day.
- The sun sets before 5 p.m., so plan outdoor sightseeing early.
