Downtown San Jose is a bigger city than most Palo Alto visitors expect, but its dining scene is easy to cover on foot. Restaurants cluster around San Pedro Square, along South First Street and near the arena. On a game night the sidewalks fill with Sharks jerseys. On a weekday the food hall fills at lunch with people who work downtown.

This guide names only places we confirmed in late 2026 on their own websites or, for one longtime restaurant whose site blocks automated checks, on the official Visit San Jose listing. For museums, the Tech Interactive and a sample day plan, see our San Jose day trip guide.

How downtown dining is laid out

Think of downtown in three parts. San Pedro Square, on the northwest side, is the main eating district, with the food hall and sidewalk patios. South First Street runs through the middle, with cafes, bars and Original Joe's. The arena area, west toward SAP Center and Diridon station, has Henry's Hi-Life and fills on event nights. Everything on this page is within about a mile of the Caltrain station.

San Pedro Square Market

San Pedro Square Market is the easiest first stop for a group that cannot agree on dinner. Stalls ring a courtyard built around the Peralta Adobe. The market says the adobe was built in 1797 and is the last structure left from El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe. The modern square took shape in 1972, when the first restaurants and bars opened on the block. The market itself opened in 2012. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday. In fall 2026 it opened at 10 a.m. on football Sundays. Its calendar also lists hockey watch parties, trivia and a chess night at its beer bar, Market Beer Co.

A few stalls worth knowing:

  • Pizza Bocca Lupo bakes thin Neapolitan pies for about 90 seconds in an almond-wood oven imported from Naples. It calls itself the first Neapolitan pizzeria in the South Bay with such an oven.
  • Pasta Fresca makes its pasta and sauces in house. The owner trained at Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons in England.
  • Loteria Taco Bar has been in the market since its first day in 2012, serving braised meats in homemade tortillas plus nachos and fried plantains.
  • Phonomenal Noodle House serves Vietnamese pho in the Market Hall on North Almaden Avenue.
  • Master Shin Korean Plate serves Korean plates in the same hall.

Classic dining rooms

Original Joe's

Original Joe's San Jose has stood at 301 South First Street since 1956. Visit San Jose describes it as a downtown institution in the style of the San Francisco original, with cozy booths and large portions of pasta, prime rib and veal scaloppini. The two restaurants are separate businesses. Its own website did not allow our automated check, so confirm hours by phone before a special dinner.

Henry's Hi-Life

Henry's Hi-Life has served oak-wood flame-broiled steaks, baby back ribs and barbecue chicken since 1960. It opened at a different site and moved a few years later when Interstate 280 was built. Today it sits at 301 Sharks Way, two blocks from SAP Center. Its site lists lunch and dinner Tuesday to Friday, dinner from 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday brunch and dinner and closed Monday. Expect a crowd before Sharks games.

Oaxacan food at Mezcal

Mezcal at 25 West San Fernando Street, behind the Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph, specializes in Oaxacan cooking. Owner Adolfo Gomez came to San Jose from Oaxaca in 1989 and opened the restaurant with his family in November 2008. The kitchen is known for family-recipe moles, including coloradito and mole negro. Its site lists lunch and dinner Tuesday to Friday, all-day service on weekends and closed Monday. It has one of the larger covered patios downtown. Our Mexican and Latin American food guide covers options closer to Palo Alto.

Coffee and cocktails

Nirvana Soul Coffee at 315 South First Street is a locally owned roaster with other cafes on Main Street Cupertino and in San Francisco. Its downtown cafe lists weekday hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a later close on Friday. It also roasts beans for sale and runs roastery tours. For more cafes near home, see our Palo Alto coffee guide.

Paper Plane at 72 South First Street has poured craft cocktails since 2013 and keeps one of the larger spirits collections in the Bay Area. It serves food until an 11 p.m. last call. The bar opens at 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and stays open until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Each holiday season it hosts the Christmas-themed Miracle pop-up. See our cocktail bars guide for Palo Alto choices.

Eating around games and concerts

SAP Center hosts Sharks games, concerts and family shows. Nights with an event change the whole west side of downtown. Restaurants near the arena fill an hour before start time and parking prices rise. Two simple strategies work. Eat early at San Pedro Square and walk about 15 minutes to the arena, or eat after the event when the rush has cleared. If you still need seats, you can find SAP Center tickets before you plan dinner.

Planning your visit

  1. Take the train. San Jose Diridon is about a mile from San Pedro Square. Our Caltrain guide covers fares and timetables. Check the last train home before a late dinner.
  2. Mind Mondays. Henry's, Mezcal and Paper Plane all close on Monday.
  3. Combine with Japantown. It is about a mile north. See our Japantown food guide for lunch there.
  4. Stay over for a big night. Several large hotels sit near the convention center. You can compare downtown San Jose hotels if you plan to stay late.

Openings, closings and checking ahead

Downtown San Jose has seen steady turnover. Original Gravity Public House, a craft beer bar that ran for about ten years, now posts a permanent closure notice on its website and says its owners plan a new concept. Before you go, open each restaurant's own site on the day of your visit and look for holiday hours from late November.
