San Bruno is easy to underrate. Most people know it for the old Tanforan site, YouTube's headquarters or the cemetery along Interstate 280. Its food is quieter but real. San Mateo Avenue, the old main street, runs south from an elevated Caltrain station past a chef-driven dinner room, cafes and taquerias. El Camino Real adds Filipino and Chinese kitchens. Up the hill, the Bayhill Shopping Center holds an izakaya that serves omakase.

This guide names only places we confirmed on their own websites or first-party ordering pages in early November 2026. Several San Bruno restaurants confirm their hours only on delivery apps, which we do not count, so they are not here. Price notes are our rough read of posted menus. For Tanforan's history, parks and BART, see our San Bruno town guide.

A chef's dinner on San Mateo Avenue

JC Bruno Restaurant at 741 San Mateo Avenue is the culinary project of chef Juan Carlos "JC" Morales. He trained in French cooking and worked in San Francisco kitchens including Michael Mina before opening here. The menu mixes French technique, California ingredients and his Peruvian heritage: classic bouillabaisse, sake-miso Chilean sea bass, lomo saltado, rack of lamb and filet mignon. The restaurant serves dinner Tuesday to Saturday from 5:30 to 9 p.m. It takes reservations and private event inquiries only, by phone or text. It is steps from the Caltrain station, so it suits a train dinner. Our Peruvian food guide covers lomo saltado closer to home.

Filipino feasts and dumplings on El Camino

Patio Filipino

Patio Filipino at 1770 El Camino Real has served Filipino food with Spanish influences for more than 20 years. The menu includes kare-kare (a peanut oxtail stew) and several kinds of sisig. It books buffet banquets in a private room and sells party trays. Its site lists lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 9 p.m., with Tuesday closed. See our Filipino food guide for dishes to try.

Dumpling Era

Dumpling Era at 354 El Camino Real makes dumplings by hand along with noodles and traditional Chinese dishes. Its site lists lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and dinner from 5 to 9:30 p.m. every day, with online ordering and reservations. It is an inexpensive lunch. Our dumplings and noodles guide covers Palo Alto.

Ocean Palace

Ocean Palace, a Chinese restaurant listed in the Camino Plaza center, takes pickup and delivery orders for its San Bruno kitchen through its own ordering site. It does not publish much else, so call for dine-in hours.

An izakaya at Bayhill

Ichika at 851 Cherry Avenue, in the Bayhill Shopping Center, is a Japanese izakaya with branches in Milpitas and Brisbane. It offers a seasonal omakase and welcomes walk-ins. Its site lists weekday lunch from noon to 2 p.m. and dinner every evening from 5 p.m. Small plates make it easy to share. Our Japanese food guide covers izakayas near Palo Alto.

Cafes, taquerias and a family restaurant

Taqueria San Bruno at 1045 San Mateo Avenue, at the south end of downtown, serves Mexican food. Its site lists Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. A second taqueria, Taqueria Mi Durango, takes online orders for its San Bruno branch on El Camino Real. Our tacos and burritos guide has Palo Alto picks.

Two small cafes sit near the station on San Mateo Avenue. One Love Cafe at 486 San Mateo Avenue serves coffee and cafe food. West Coast Cafe is a few doors north at 466 San Mateo Avenue. Both take online orders through Toast, which lists them on its San Bruno restaurant page. The same page lists Jack's Restaurant and Bar at 1050 Admiral Court, Suite A, a big family restaurant with breakfast, burgers and mac and cheese on its menu.

Choosing by mood and budget

San Bruno is mostly an inexpensive place to eat. A taqueria plate, a dumpling lunch or a cafe sandwich costs well under what the same meal runs in downtown Palo Alto. The exceptions are JC Bruno, a sit-down dinner with steak and seafood mains, plus Ichika's omakase, which is priced as a set meal. Patio Filipino sits in the middle and is built for groups: family-style platters, party trays and a banquet room make it a good choice for a birthday or a reunion. If you are traveling with children, Dumpling Era and Jack's are the most relaxed. If you want a quiet table for two, book JC Bruno and ask for an early seating so you can catch a train home.

A sample San Bruno food crawl

  1. Late morning: Ride a Caltrain that stops at San Bruno and walk down the station stairs to One Love Cafe for coffee.
  2. Lunch: Walk or drive to Dumpling Era on El Camino Real for dumplings and a noodle bowl.
  3. Afternoon: Walk off lunch at Junipero Serra County Park or drive up to the Bayhill center to see Ichika for a future omakase night.
  4. Dinner: Book JC Bruno for a Tuesday to Saturday dinner on San Mateo Avenue, then walk back to the station.

Getting there from Palo Alto

  • Caltrain: San Bruno station is at 833 San Mateo Avenue, raised above the corner of San Mateo and San Bruno avenues. It is a three-zone fare from Palo Alto: $8.50 in October 2026 and $9.00 from January 1, 2027. Not every train stops, so check the timetable and our Caltrain guide.
  • Driving: About 22 miles, 25 to 30 minutes outside rush hour on Highway 101 or Interstate 280. Use the San Bruno Avenue exit for downtown.
  • BART: San Bruno's BART station by the Tanforan site is one stop north of Millbrae, where BART meets Caltrain.
  • Near SFO: San Bruno sits beside the airport, so an early dinner here works before an evening flight.
